Play(Theater)
• a form of literature written by a playwright.
• Consist of scripted dialogue intended for theatrical performance.
• The term "play" can be either a general term, or more specifically refer to a non-musical play.

THE COMEDY & THE TRAGIC
It has been said that:Tragedy is life viewed close at hand, andComedy is life viewed at a distance.Comedy is life to the person who thinks, andTradedy to the one that feels.
~ it only means, the same situation may seem tragic to one and comic to another or tragic at one time and comic at another
Comedy• The intent of a comedic play is to
make the audience laugh.
• The chief source of the comic is the incongruous, the unexpected.
• In modern theater, the humor is derived from real-life situations, to outrageous slapstick humor.
Characteristic of Comedy
Comedy is:• primarily intellectual.• highly specialized in its appeal.• detached.
Humor and Satire
• Humor is a matter of spirit rather than of words. Usually it has in it something of extravagance.
• Satire aims, or least pretend to aim at improvement. The satirist sees the vices and faults of the human race, and exposes them in a comic manner
Wit
-general name for those forms of the comic which have to do with words.
Diff. types under wit: • Spoonerisms• Malapropisms• Puns• Epigrams• Parody
-Spoonerism-
-named for one of its most distinguished exponents, the Reverend W. A. Spooner of Oxford, is the accidental transposition of the initial letters of two or more words.
-Malapropism-
-named, for Mrs. Malaprop in “The Rivals”, is the ludicrous misuse of a word for one resembling it.
-Pun-
- is a play on words which have the same sound or similar sounds but different meanings.
-Epigram-
- is a condensed, pithy statement.
-Parody-
- is an imitation, usually of a very well-known work. The parody imitates the model very closely but turns the original into ridiculous.
Tragedy
• Tragedy implies an unhappy unfortunate ending to a series of events.
• These plays often involve death and are designed to cause the reader or viewer to feel sadness.
• In ancient times, a tragedy was often a historical dramas featuring the downfall of a great man.
Characteristic of Tragedy
Tragedy is:• Emotional• Demands a sense of a inevitability• Lives in a world where every deed brings its
consequences and values are triumphant.
Natures of the Tragic
• Implies a sudden reversal in prospects, a drop from high estate to a low one.
• The necessity for the death of the protagonist –the hero or heroine
• Tragedy leaves one in a state of grief but also of positive exaltation.
