Accountancy, together with its related fields such as taxation, consulting, risk management and corporate governance, is the cornerstone of an economic system. Accounting and financial information is essential for any organisation to operate profitably in good times and sustainably in challenging times.

So what does this mean for accountancy students? It means that when you graduate, you will always be in demand in both accounting and non-accounting industries regardless of market conditions. It also means that when vying for that promotion in your company, your accounting background might well be the edge which tips the scales in your favour.

At the SMU School of Accountancy (SoA), we will take you one step further. In today’s fast-paced business environment, employers look beyond technical competencies when hiring or promoting – they look for skilled, articulate, career savvy and confident workers who can make a positive impact on their organisation.

Our Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) programme provides a holistic education emphasising real-world readiness. The curriculum is broad-based, covering business, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership skills, communications and social responsibility, centred on a strong accounting core. Compulsory internship and community service ensure our students graduate with hands-on experience and are ready for the corporate world.

We also believe in empowering our students to chart their own education journey. Students have the flexibility to complete their BAcc degrees within three years or longer, if they wish to boost their market value with more practical experience, a double degree or a specialised accounting track.

Faced with the responsibility of tailoring their own education experience, our students appreciate first hand the importance of planning early in their tertiary education – another life skill which will serve them well in the years to come.

We look forward to welcoming you as our student.

INTERACTIVE & INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY TEACHING EXCELLENCE

05 06

SMU was the first local university to introduce interactive learning in the classroom, where students are transformed into articulate and confident individuals.

Our SoA faculty members also enhance the learning experience for students by developing teaching innovations and unique learning tools that complement textbook learning.

Our world-class faculty are recognised as some of the best educators – they are strongly connected to the accounting industry and have won multiple teaching awards.

INTERACTIVE PEDAGOGY TEACHING INNOVATIONS

Seminar-style learning encourages students to improve their critical thinking abilities and communication skills, while enabling professors to devote adequate time and attention to each student, drawing lively participation from everyone.

Faculty members at SoA innovate in developing high quality learning tools for their students. Most recently, our faculty received the CEEMAN Champion Awards 2013 for Outstanding Innovation in Teaching for the Accounting Challenge (ACE) app, an interactive mobile app that teaches accounting concepts through play.

SMU’s pedagogy involves small class sizes where learning is

interactive and stimulating. Prior to entering the school, I did not

usually speak up during class, but SMU has helped me to take the

initiative and facilitate the two-way interaction between the professors

and the students.

The SMU BAcc programme is built with a unique pedagogy centred on seminar-style education; a robust and highly accredited technical curriculum; and a project-based assessment structure. The programme has helped equip me with the soft skills required for communicating in a business environment, a strong technical foundation in accounting, and an ability to work effectively in teams.

In the three years that Annabelle has spent in the SMU School of Accountancy, I have seen her grow increasingly articulate,

self-confident and most of all, develop a can-do attitude which has encouraged her to take

on challenges outside of her comfort zone… I have also noticed that she has developed

a keen sense of social responsibility and empathy for the less privileged.

SMU has been nothing short of revolutionary for me. From knowing little

beyond my shores, SMU has given me numerous opportunities outside the classroom,

for community service and exchange, to really broaden my horizons.

SoA offers a unique learning experience combining “hard knowledge skills + soft people skills + heart skills”, which transforms our students into technically competent, well-rounded and socially responsible individuals.

SOFT PEOPLE SKILLS

Through interactive pedagogy and seminar-style classes, students are encouraged to build on their people skills by speaking up and presenting their opinions in a clear and convincing manner.

CREATING SOCIAL IMPACT THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE

All students have to serve a compulsory 80 hours or two weeks of community service, either locally or abroad. Students develop social responsibility and empathy for the less fortunate through their involvement in community service projects. SoA students appreciate the value of engaging in community service and the majority voluntarily clock beyond the stipulated 80 hours.

Community Service to me, is simply about helping others. Ironically, however, every time I embark on something that I think seems to help others, I am helped much more by it. My feeble attempts at helping others never failed to humble me, point out my character flaws and remind me of the many areas I can grow in. These lessons learnt and the more than proportionate amount of joy generated always make me realise how much more I receive in return.

In an increasingly competitive marketplace, the professional services industry thrives on having the right people with the right set of skills. As an employer, Deloitte is excited about the introduction of SMU’s three specialised accounting tracks that aims to provide graduates with the necessary technical knowledge and expertise to help them get ahead in their careers when they enter the workforce.

ACCOUNTING TRACKS

Students can choose to specialise in one of the three available accounting tracks – Financial Management Track, Risk Management & Assurance Track or Taxation Track by completing a specific set of courses under Accounting Options. These tracks provide specialised pathways into areas of excellence where students gain exposure that enhance their knowledge and career opportunities.

MS SEAH GEK CHOOTalent PartnerDeloitte Singapore

SMU is the only university in Singapore to offer specialised accounting tracks for students who want to add depth to

their knowledge in a particular accounting field.HEART SKILLS

SMU strongly encourages social awareness and responsibility in its students as part of an on-going effort to nurture civic-minded individuals who contribute to their organisations. Compulsory community service teaches students to tap on their knowledge and skills to give back to society.

SMU LIFELESSONS

SMU LifeLessons is a structured out-of-classroom, values-based educational programme, aimed at complementing SMU’s academic curriculum, so that students can gain a broad-based, holistic university experience. The SMU LifeLessons syllabus aims to inculcate in our students values and character-building qualities that will help see them through life. Primary platforms involving analysing case studies, discussions, journaling, role-playing, and generative conversations, will enable students to learn about themselves, their peers, their communities, and the world. By further engaging in community projects, they will learn to put these values to practice.

The majority of SoA students graduate with either a double degree or a second major which makes them more attractive to employers and

provides more versatility in their career choices.

SMU BAcc students can choose to graduate with a double degree out of 15 possible double degree combinations. Prospective students with outstanding academic results may apply for direct entry to the double degree programme. Current students already enrolled in a single degree programme and who display exceptional results in their first or second year, can also opt for the double degree programme.

SMU BAcc students may also elect for a second major to augment their accounting knowledge, from a choice of 21 possible second majors at any of the six schools in SMU.

I decided to opt for a full four years to finish my course. The reason for this is simple: You only get to be a university undergraduate once – and so too comes the experiences of being an intern; being involved in community service; engaging freshmen in the Freshmen Team Building Camp; travelling abroad on an exchange programme and so much more! Taking my time to complete the programme has given me the leeway to be involved in a broad range of school activities without being overly taxed on the academic front.

Students looking to further their postgraduate studies in top schools overseas, may find that taking four years to finish their BAcc degree in SoA opens more doors for them. For instance, certain top US Schools (e.g. HAAS School of Business, Berkeley and Yale School of Management) require international applicants to have at least four years of tertiary education to qualify for a number of their postgraduate programmes.

JONATHAN GAN JIA-EN Accountancy AlumnusSenior Tax Associate, KPMG

Students at SoA have the flexibility to complete the BAcc programme in 3, 3.5 or 4 years. With this freedom to plan their education, students can better maximise their

learning journey here and graduate with much more than an accountancy degree:

BE CAREER SAVVY

Pro-active involvement in the vibrant student life on campus allows students to hone their leadership potential and qualities, while

internships let them gain real-world perspectives and discover new insights on their career choices.

These summer internships have definitely value-added in three key ways –

firstly, they have given me a clearer idea of what I am genuinely interested in, and

consequently what I want to pursue as a career in the foreseeable future. Secondly, they have

paved paths to employment opportunities through structured programmes and lastly

they have taught me transferrable technical and soft skills that cannot be

I will never forget the objection I received from my close friends and family members when I broke the news that I was heading over to India for

SMU also offers a wide range of scholarships and financial assistance to ensure all deserving students have equal opportunity to obtain a tertiary education. In fact, one in six SMU students are beneficiaries of scholarships, study awards or other financial support

from the university, in recognition of their achievements and potential.

Students in SoA can look forward to scholarships sponsored by major employers, our professors and our alumni. In particular, our SoA professors and alumni are

passionate about supporting SoA students financially and have set up a number of scholarships for SoA students.

We hope that the School of Accountancy Scholarship will provide an avenue to build up a caring and compassionate culture within the School of Accountancy and SMU, one that will lead our alumni to continue in the same tradition.
