Schedule

Summary2/11

Page 3: DIFFUSER HARDWARE REPORT V. Blackmore J. Cobb, M. Dawson, J. Tacon, M. Tacon

Redesigned diffuser. Simpler, faster, neater

Proto-prototype built in ~few days and brought to CM27

Improvements made based on comments ‘Cassettes’ – G. Barber

Oxford DO review & Technical Board review completed.

The Story So Far...3/11

Four in-line irises contained in cassettes. Controlled by pneumatic

rotary actuators upstream.

Simple optical sensors on shafts give iris status.

Contains 3 radiation lengths of material: 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6Xo each

Completed: All Tufnol parts (cassette

rings, support rings).

Spacers & gears.

Air block.

Approx. 40% complete

Demonstrated prototype. Purchased and tested

actuator. Production drawings.

In Progress: Acquire remaining

materials (~few weeks lead time)

Modify actuators. Test a cassette with brass

petals. Test optical sensors. Modify air crate. Modify electronics crate

and control software. Integrate with EPICS.

Possibility of moving diffuser further into SS?

Still on course!

Completed: Bought one actuator to test and modify. Works well at 2bar at the end of an 8m pipe.

In progress: Replacement of magnetic components.

Problems: Cover a small fraction of the aperture. Can offset actuators radially with some

additional mechanics. Do we want to do this?

Air crate: Re-using air crate Have sufficient solenoid

valves, etc. Rebuild and rewire crate

(soon) New front panel and indicators

Electronics crate: Re-using crate from old

design. Some rewiring New front panel

Labview & EPICs: Easily modified Easier integration into EPICs.

Plug-&-Play! Install crates.

Install pipes and cables.

Install drum on patch panel.

Insert cassette assembly into drum.

Mount actuators.

Connect pipes and cables.

Test, test, test!

Use!

No infrastructure changes necessary.
