Digestion Disorders

• Diarrhea– Caused by food sensitivity, harmful bacteria, and

stress– Diarrhea causes food to move through the

digestive system too quickly for nutrients to be fully absorbed

– Leads to loss of body fluids– Prolonged diarrhea may be a symptom of other

health problems—see a doctor

• Constipation– Occurs when chyme moves very slowly through

the large intestine, causing too much water to be reabsorbed

– This causes the feces to become very solid making bowel movements painful

– Straining may cause hemorrhoids (swollen veins in the rectum)

– Constipation results from erratic eating habits, low fiber intake, and lack of physical activity

– Drinking too little water and failing to respond to a bowel movement urge can also add to this problem

• Ways to prevent?– Choose a high fiber diet– Get regular physical activity– Drink plenty of water

• Indigestion– is a difficulty in digesting food– may be caused by stress, eating too much or too

fast, or eating particular foods– symptoms may include gas, stomach cramps, and

nausea

calories at one meal– avoid foods that seem to upset your stomach– eat in a relaxed atmosphere to help reduce stress

• Lactose Intolerance– is the inability to digest the carbohydrate lactose– is caused by the body’s inability to produce

enough lactase to digest the lactose– may produce cramping, nausea, gas, and diarrhea

when milk and dairy products are consumed

• Heartburn– a burning pain in the middle of the chest that has

nothing to do with the heart– caused by stomach acid flowing back into the

esophagus (known as reflux)– see a doctor if there is ongoing or recurrent

heartburn - may be a sign of a more serious condition called gastro esophageal reflux disease

• Ulcer– open sore in the lining of the stomach or small

intestine– caused by a bacterium– ulcerated area becomes inflamed and causes a

burning pain– some individuals may have a hereditary tendency

for the disease

• Ways to prevent?– choose a healthy lifestyle– eat a nutritious diet– increase physical activity and decrease stress levels– get enough sleep and restrict the use of alcohol, tobacco,

• Gallstones– small crystals that form from bile in the gallbladder– when gallstones block the bile duct between the

gallbladder and small intestine, severe pain arises– gallstones slow fat digestion and cause fluids to pool and

back up into the liver• Ways to prevent/What to do?

– choose a low fat diet– seek medical attention– surgery may be required to remove the gallbladder

in the intestinal wall, causing inflammation– caused by a high fat diet and an inactive lifestyle

• Way to prevent?– eat a high fiber diet that will help keep intestinal

muscles toned
