Requirements for Modern Room Automation Systems

Technical building services are becoming increasingly important for planning, constructing and operating modern property. Rea-sons include a growing demand among investors, operators and users for buildings with improved energy efficiency and comfort with minimum life-cycle costs, convertibility, profitability and value.Energy efficiency requirements for buildings as stipulated by EPBD, EnEV and certification systems such as DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council), BREEAM or LEED must also be considered.

Based on the preceding requirements and the requirements of DIN EN ISO16484, VDI 3814, VDI 3813 and DIN EN 15232, DIGICONTROL automation systems comprise all modules for efficient automation of modern buildings, and many other modules that expand upon the state of the art and enable particularly efficient operation.

DIGICONTROL – Focusing on Energy Efficiency

DIGICONTROL meets the highest requirements of the DIN EN 15232 standard

More than 40 % of worldwide energy is consumed in buildings – a significant factor driving greenhouse gas emissions. The respon-sibility of property owners and the pressure on building operators to reduce energy consumption, and hence emissions, is increasing worldwide.Sustainable use of energy is not just a global challenge, but also a growing concern for business managers, since reduced energy costs increase a company's competitive edge.

Among the essential means to this end are integrated building and room automation solutions. An optimised building automation system of energy efficiency class A can improve the efficiency of a building by up to 30 %.The DIN EN 15232 standard lists the effects of building and room automation on the energy efficiency of buildings (Energy perform-ance of buildings – Impact of Building Automation Control and Building Management).

The standard describes methods for assessing the impact of build-ing automation and technical building management on the energy consumption of buildings. The automation functions are divided into four building automation (BA) efficiency classes:

Class A stands for highly energy-efficient BA systems and Q

technical building management (TBM).Class B stands for optimised BA systems and some special Q

TBM functions.Class C stands for standard BA systems. Q

Class D stands for BA systems that are not energy efficient. Q

Buildings with such systems must be modernised. New build-ings may not be built with systems of this class.

DIGICONTROL automation systems conform to the highest BA efficiency class A, as specified in the DIN EN 15232 standard.

DIGICONTROL ems2The DIGICONTROL ems2 automation system is the basis for implement-ing comprehensive building automation systems and networks for all building categories.

DIGICONTROL ems2 has a control unit, various configurable inputs and outputs and, in the ems2.CP04D version, a display and rotary pulse encoder for entering setpoints, querying actual values, switching times, etc. It is a compact station used in smaller systems and is also used as a modular system in complex building automation networks with multiple information centres. DIGICONTROL ems2 is also ideal for integrating multiple technical building services systems distributed throughout a building. In connection with ems4 modules, ems2 offers a broad range of integration solutions which cover even very specialised areas of various building categories.

The web server integrated in ems2 facilitates convenient operation of systems without building control systems. Performance, sustainability and profitability are other arguments for using ems2.

Compact, yet modularFor detached or smaller systems, ems2 offers a particular advantage: ems2 is compact, yet modular and can be enhanced using ems4 modules. DIGICONTROL ems2 redefines the concept of modularity. Modularity is achieved through simple configuration of the software for the integrated, multifunctional inputs and outputs. This ensures optimal hardware utilisa-tion. Additional modules often become unnecessary.

The DIGICONTROL ems 2 and ems 4 (economic modular system) are network-based, interdisciplinary, freely programmable automation systems for universal tasks in all areas of building and industrial automa-tion for systems of all sizes. Open communication using all modern com-munication channels, the consistent use of introduced standards, the use

Open for universal applications in all areas of building automation and industrial automation.

of existing IT infrastructure, the integration of various areas and systems, as well as the sophisticated, modular concept with decentralised distribution of tasks by using intelligent, fine-modular assemblies make DIGICONTROL automation systems predestined for all applications of the present and future.

At home in complex building networksAs a component of complex building and room automation networks with multiple information centres, ems2 offers various installation options and can be integrated into all common electric distribution systems. DIGICONTROL ems2, field bus modules, and ems4 integration modules can be installed in control cabinets, switchboards, subdistribution systems, ceiling distributors and underfloor distributors. Thanks to PoE (Power over Ethernet), ems2 does not even require a power adapter or a separate plug.

DIGICONTROL – economic modular system

Fine-modular structureThe equipment of an information centre with automation hardware varies depending on the technical building systems to be attached. Depend-ing on the type and size of the system and the building network to be installed, either ems2 and/or ems4 controllers are installed. These controllers can be expanded with the required number of ems4 hardware modules. A comprehensive range of communication modules and bus modules is available. On pages 10 and 11 of this brochure, you will find the overview of system components.

Intelligent input and output modules DIGICONTROL ems4 and ems2 also feature a fine-modular software structure. Highly complex tasks are no longer processed by a single controller, but are instead efficiently distributed. All modules have an “autonomous intelligence” function. This means they process parts of the program autonomously, without using the control unit's computing power. The control unit can therefore perform control and regulation tasks far more efficiently. If we look at how blinds are controlled, for example: The controller only defines the position of blinds and slats as a percentage. The output module moves the blinds to the preset position automatically. Or: Input modules convert voltage signals or passive signals into temperatures, scale them and send them to the control unit.

GFR is a Member of the BACnet Interest Group Europe

ems4.CP03B-BAC is listed with BACnet International.

DIGICONTROL ems4The control units ems4.CP02B and ems4.CP03B-BAC are the core of DIGICONTROL ems4. The communicate with the system's input and out-put modules using a CAN bus with excellent interference resistance and real-time transmission. The input and output modules can also act as system-specific interfaces in addition to the standard analogue and digital signals (e.g.: M bus, KNX/EIB, LCN, Grundfos and Wilo bus, Modbus, etc.).

The BACnet Building Controller (B-BC) ems4.CP03B-BAC was tested and certified by the WSP Lab. Its BACnet functions make ems4.CP03B-BAC one of the most comprehen-sive automation stations available on the market.

DIGICONTROL – Control Systems

easy client – Control DisplaysAn automation system must communicate clearly with the user. Conven-ient communication is an essential sign of quality in modern building automation systems.

Comfort and high performance characterize DIGICONTROL operating units. Ethernet/IP, BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP and CAN Bus interfaces allow direct integration into the automation network. This way, the displays can be installed anywhere in the building and be used to control all system components.

Local priority operating levelThe installation of the integrated LPO (local priority operating level) re-quires only the connection of a data bus cable. Thick cable harnesses are not required at all.

All modules meet the requirements of VDI 3814 and DIN EN 16484.

DIGICONTROL – System Integration

Solutions for integrated building automation systems

If you want to operate a building and save energy, you need an innovative automation system that can integrate all technical build-ing services. It is no longer feasible to treat heating and cooling energy centres, room air conditioning systems, shade systems, facade control, lighting, etc. as autarkic systems. As the hub of the building network, the automation system must record, process and transmit information from all systems and assign it properly.

Innovative automation concepts take into account all building states, regardless of which system they belong to, and make them interdependent, taking into account the optimum energy yield. BACnet, KNX/EIB, DALI, M bus, Modbus, Profibus, etc. – all net-works communicate with each other.

Integrated Planning, Configuration, Operation, Optimisation

Integrated building automation

GFR building automation systems are char-acterised by consistency of products and services and the broad range of integra-tion solutions, which facilitate an integrated approach and particularly energy-efficient operation of the building. Our approach to building automation solu-tions, DIGICONTROL, starts with innovative system engineering using WEBPROJECT and extends to active building operation using WEBVISION, all the way to optimi-sation of building systems using efficient WEBENCON energy management.

Our system solutions for automation of buildings, rooms and facility management allow us to provide customised solutions that exceed conventional standards.

webCADpro

webCADpro is the tool for project plan-ning and configuration of DIGICONTROL automation systems.

The data and text imported from the WEBPROJECT system engineering are used in webCADpro to automatically configure and label hardware and software modules. This means: The automation software is not programmed in a con-ventional manner. Instead, customizable webCADpro macros based on the WEBPROJECT information are combined to create the automation software.

Automatic system configuration does not just save costs, but also offers op-timal consistency, functionality, safety, and energy efficiency.
