WHAT IS A DIGIPAK?A digipak is essentially a form of

CD packaging. It is a self-contained package the same size as a jewel

case which is typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs. Also,

it is better at protecting CDs because it is shatterproof.

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special

editions of CD albums. There are many different layouts for the

digipak however, the vast majority of them tend to be either 4 ,6 or 8

sided. This can range from a single CD folder, to compilation cd binder

or boxed set.

ADVANTAGES OF A DIGIPAKThere are many benefits of a digipak in comparison to a jewel case.

1) It’s shatterproof – As stated before, because of the materials a digipak is made from it is unlikely to become damaged if dropped making it durable.

2) They give the artist more room to promote themselves as a digipak can be up to 8 sides.

3) They are more environmentally friendly in terms of the packaging as less plastic is used.

4) They do not break as quickly as jewel cases.

DISADVANTAGES OF A DIGIPAK

1) Digipaks don’t crack like jewel cases, however, after time they will begin to rip.

2) The trays inside the digipak tend to break because they have a lot less protection in comparison to jewel cases as the outer material is made of paper. Essentially, the teeth that hold the CD case in time will crack and fall out.

3) When the side of the tray does break, the CD is likely to fall out the bottom of the digipak as there is nothing to hold it in place. This may also cause damage to the CD itself.

4) Digipaks are more expensive that CDs, so only loyal fans will purchase one.

A digipak will represent the artist as well as their music genre. It will create a particular message which they want to convey to their fans and potential buyers. Digipaks often benefit the artist and their music as it is a key promotional tool which helps to inform and bring awareness to the artist. Although

digipaks tend to be more expensive than a CD, because of the details it contains and the additional incentive some come , with, for instance a poster, people are more likely to want to

buy the digipak. Ultimately, buying a digipak can help establish your loyalty to the actual artist.
