Digipak Analysis For our Digipak research/analysis I researched into similar bands/artists that are in the indie/alternative genre. I have chosen to look at the digipaks of the Alex Clare and Alt-J . I have analysed The Lateness Of The Hour album and An Awesome Wave. I have looked at the colours, layout, fonts, image, genre, audience, institution and representation. I have chosen to look at Alex Clare, Jake Bugg and Alt-J because they are artists from the indie/alternative genre and like me they are an individual artist.

Standard DigipakThis a standard digipak consisting of 6 panels. One panel is for title of the album and usually consists of a image of the artist. The back panel is usually the track listings for the album.

One panel will be used for the actual CD. The other panels are either pictures of the artist or lyrics from the songs on the album.

Alex Clare The Lateness Of The Hour album

The Digipak itself consists of 12 panels. The first two panels are consist of the artists name ‘Alex Clare ‘ and two photos that are unrelated to the artist. However the clock image could relate to the song ‘Up All Night’, the ship on the water could relate to the song ‘Treading Water’ and the humming bird could relate to the song ‘Humming Bird’.

Black and White are the two main clothes used throughout the digipak. This use of black and white could suggest that there aren’t any hidden or ambiguous messages in his music and is merely based upon personal experiences. This indication about his lyrics reinforces my research into the indie/alternative genre, as conventionally indie/alternative sing about personal feelings/experiences.

Alex Clare The Lateness Of The Hour album

The back cover of Alex Clare’s album is unconventionally left blank. Normally the back cover is used for track listings for the album so that the consumer knows that songs are on the album.

The other panels in the digipak consist of song titles and lyrics to his songs. The inclusion of lyrics in the digipak is a pleasant touch to his album and allow fans and consumers to sing along to his songs while listening to them.

This panel is another image included in the digipak which at first glance suggests that the image is completely unrelated to the artist and to the digipak itself. However as the image is of a stormy sea scene, the image could relate to the song ‘Treading Water’.
