Katy Perry is categorized as pop. This album cover showing no difference. The design is on shiny paper, which gives the effect of a
rainbow, which a Prism is known for. The name of the album. It also plays with optical illusions (light reflective colour) and this
fanatical world Katy wants to create.
The font used in and on the album is ‘triangular-like’, very pointy and straight. This ties in well with the album
theme of “Prism”, which are known to be geometric. The track listings on the back of the album are set out like a Prism, folding around Katy. With the font in the
triangular style previously mentioned.
Unlike my first example, the artist, on this album cover doesn’t take up the whole on the front cover. The reason for this is perhaps
because, the theme of “Prism” wants to be upheld, meaning the image is square and geometric. However, this can’t be said for the remaining images used throughout the album. Here, these images are very dainty and ‘cute’; something Katy wants to appear like in order to reflect her “Prism” persona, it is said she wanted to “let the light in” with this album.. A Prism reflects various colours and
light. It all varies, like humans do. She therefore wants to show that she accepts no-matter who you are.
Like my first example,
Katy’s mode of address is the audience. On
the album cover, she
looks directly towards them in a close-up shot. This is because she
wants to capture them. Like a “Prism”
does to a person due to its brightness and colour.
Also in this album, a little card prism was included in the pack. The reason behind this
would be that the consumer would plant the Prism and “Spread the light” but also, in relation to the flower theme on the album, almost like the consumer will plant the card and it will open up something beautiful, like
nature.
The use of light in the
images suggest they were taken
early evening/dus
k- this further
emphasises the idea of
magical and mystical
happenings- something Katy wants to signify with and
throughout the album.
