Eachofthebackgroundimagesonthedigi-pakhavebeenscannedinfromphysicalprintsusingadigitalscanner.WeselectedtheoneswewantedtousewiththehelpofAdobeBridgeandimportedthemtoPhoto-shop,croppingthemtofitintheirrespecveplaceswithdroppedopacityontotheprovideddigipak“backgroundschemac”.Theabil-itytoshithephotosaroundeasily,copyinganddelengdifferentversionsofvariedzoomandcolourshiswasincrediblyeasyusingthelayersfeatureonPhotoshop.Weproducedtwodifferentversionsofthelayoutandcomparedthemsidebysideon-screeninoordertofinallychoosethisone.
Thetwodiscswerecroppedfromcopiesofotherimagesonthedigipakusingtheellipcalmarqueetool,selecnginverseofthelayerandfillingtheselectedspacewithemptycontentbyhingthebackspacekey.Thiskepttheimagethesamesizeasoursourcelayers,andmeantthatwecouldmovetheselec-onaroundtoincludeourfavouritepartsofeachimage,whichwefeltbestfitontothediscsthemselves.Thedigitaltechnolo-gygyreallyhelpeduswithallofthiscopyingandmovingaround,aswecouldeasilyaddordeletedifferentversionsofthediscsandmatchthemexactlytothesizeoftheirrespecvetrays.Itwouldhavebeenextremelydifficulttocutsuchaccuratecirclesmanuallyandtheselayerscouldbesentofftobeprinteddi-rectlyontodiscsifwewereactuallygoingtoproducethem.Theholesinthecentresofthesediscswerecoveredwiththeelipsistool,thenboththelayeroftheimageandtheelipsehadaholepunchedthroughusingtheelipcalmarqueeanddeletetools.Thishasgivenusarealiscdiscimage.
Theband’slogowasrearrangedusingtheselect,copyandpastefunconalies,thenthetwolayersweremergedtoformanewgraphicofthetwowordssidebyside.Thisgraphic(andthedisctles)werefittothesidesofthediscusingthewarptoolandmanuallychangingthe“arc”preset.Thebandlogosaresimplywarpedtextwetypedinandrasterizedinordertoma-nipulnipulateitproperly.Averylowopacitylayercoversthetwomiddlepanelsinordertomakethetextstandoutfromtheback-ground.Thetracklist’slayerhasbeencroppedsoastomakethetracksstandoutmorethanthelargerpara-graph,buttheyweredoneinthesamefashionbydrop-pingablacksquarebetweenthetextandimage,thendroppingitsopacitytoabout30%
ThesefalserecordlabelsweremadeinaseparatePhotoshopprojectbyusingtheellipsetool,addingastrokeandsomecontrasngtextontopinrele-vantcolours.Thesewerethencopiedoverintothemainprojectsotheycouldberesizedandplacedappropriately.Weusedthesamefontsas,canoni-cally,therearetheband’slabelstheystarted.Thettextbelowthemisjustmadeusingthetexttool,butweemulatedtheforma ngofotherlegalwrit-ingonexisngdigipaksinaclearandofficiallook-ingfont.Thisisagoodexampleofourtextplace-mentconsideraons,aswehadtopicktherightplacesontheimagestowritesothatourtextwouldstandoutandbelegible.Here,forexample,weusedtheshadowoftheaudience.
Muchlikeonourmagazineadvert,oursty-ilisedfontwascreatedbyduplicangourtext,slightlyshiingoneversionwiththemovetoolandrecolouringoneversionofthetexttoacontrasngcolourwhichmadetheothersetstandoutfromtheback-ground.
Thesocialmediahandlesherearesimplyimportedfromthemagazineadvertwherewemadethem,andthebarcodeisacroppeddownversionofabarcodegenera-torwefoundonline.Thelayoutofthisbackcoverisemulatedfromdigipakswestudiedinourresearch.
Thisimageisthemostheavilyeditedoutofthosewehaveused.WhilstallweretweakedinPhotoshopforopmalcontrastandsaturaon,weactuallychangedthecoloursofthisoneusingthevibrancead-justmenttofeaturemainlyred,whereitwasgreenbefore.Thisfittheimageintoourourcolourschemewhilstsllretainingitsframing,whichwasourfavouritefeatureandthereasonwechosetouseitonthefrontofbothofourprintproducts.Thespinesofthedigipakaremadefromusingtherectangletoolandaddingtex-t/logosontop.
