REMEMBER?Our last character lesson focused on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his character. He was a man of peace who chose his words wisely to help bring about peace and equality to our nation. He did not use bad words, ugly words, or words of hate.

How is DIGITAL citizenship like regular

citizenship?

Let’s talk about… citizenship. To be a good citizen, we act in ways that are responsible. We make good choices, say and do nice things. We are someone people can count on. People who are good citizens usually have nice things being said about them.

Digital FootprintThis past week if you played in or walked in the snow, did you leave footprints behind? Every time we use a cell phone, laptop, Chromebook, iPad, or other electronic device we are leaving footprints behind of our Digital Citizenship!

Activity: Turn to a neighbor and name ways you have

left a digital footprint. You may have already taken some “STEPS“

today!

Have you ever said something you regretted or wished you hadn’t said?

Have you ever hurt someone’s feelings?

Have your feelings ever been hurt?

Saying things that hurt someone is definitely not nice.

Sometimes hurtful things are said in a text message, on a Facebook post, or some other place.

When we are hurtful in this way, we are really hurting our digital citizenship.

Be careful, your digital footprints are walking through the mud!! YUCK!

What about pictures?

What about videos?

Can videos and pictures be just as

mean and hurtful as words????

This is a myth, buster!Its easy to think if we delete something it goes away forever.

Pictures and words sent on any electronic device never ever truly go away.

What should you do if someone sends

something hurtful or inappropriate to you.. or

about you?

1. Do not delete until an adult has seen it.2. Report it IMMEDIATELY.3. Show the adult what was sent to you so the proper action can be taken.

What should I do if something offensive is sent to me?

READ CAREFULLY!From Instagram’s Use Policy:You may not post violent, inappropriate, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, suggestive photos or other content via the Service. You must not defame, stalk, bully, abuse, harass, threaten, impersonate or intimidate people or entities and you must not post private or confidential information via the Service.

How old?How old does a person have to

be to have a social media

account?

This includes Facebook,

Instagram, and other similar

programs.

A person must be 13 years old to hold a social media account.

So, if you are not 13 years old, you are not legally allowed to have such

accounts.

Also, remember the district electronic device policy states devices must be (1) off and (2) out of sight unless under the direct supervision of a

teacher for instructional purposes.

Stop and Think Your digital citizenship is

at stake.

Every click, every text, every post leaves a digital

footprint of who you really are when no one is

around.

Keep your Digital Footprint Clean…Be a

responsible Digital Citizen.
