• Nearly 15% of research units have a presence; among the most successful systemwide programs in the history of UC

• Over 1,000,000 full-text downloads (weekly average = 25K)

Digital Commons

• Launched q3 2004• Berkeley Electronic Press technology and continuing development• ProQuest customer support and account representation• Turnkey solution: setup, training, support, documentation, upgrades, hosting, and content recruitment tools• Integration with ProQuest’s historical content (ETD’s & other]• Over a dozen adopters in first 6 months, including Penn, UConn, Boston College, Cornell, and UTEP

Addressing Faculty Concerns regarding IRs

• A feature set to save time, money, and hassle:

–Posting of objects takes ~3 minutes–Auto-conversion of Word/WordPerfect/RTF files to PDF–Ability to create version histories (preprintspostprints)–Ability to publish non-static resources such as sound and video files, data sets, and executables–Easy alternative to home-grown sites and commercial publishers–No need to rely on Larry, the local IT guy–Permanent and stable archiving solution–New trend: “claim your paper”

• A feature set to make ‘em famous: connecting with the audience

–Push email capabilities to blast new content to interested parties–Configurable saved searches and customized email alerts–Full text searching–Browse by author–Google-a-bility

• Goal is to merge two bepress strengths, content and publication technology, in a single product

• All bepress content–Two dozen peer-reviewed journals current publishing–All new journals launched during subscription period – All working paper series, postprints, preprints and other content from institutional repositories hosted by bepress

• Optional uploading capability–First (known) attempt to make a research database truly bidirectional–Notion that a reader or researcher on Subject X may actually have something to add to the literature on Subject X–Further notion that current databases fail to foster sense of community
