Digital Deadweight Survey Overview• Project Initiated to streamline and digitize
the process of conducting weight surveys• Pilot project focused on developing a mobile
application to assist with pre-inclining surveys in new construction for LCS Freedom class
• Successful pilot in October 2016 validated time savings
• Follow-on project initiated in April to address additional programs and use cases

Digital Deadweight Project Goals• Expand functionality to support a broader base of
users and more complex use cases• Additional data capture such as photo, video,
signature• Potential integration with systems of record such
as Flooding Casualty Control System (FCCS)• Implementation of an RDF triple store to support a
variety of data inputs and data reuse• Transition from prototype to production ready
solution (FMM, NNS and Conrad)

Resource Description Framework• RDF is a standard model for data
interchange on the Web. • RDF has features that facilitate data
merging even if the underlying schemas differ, and it specifically supports the evolution of schemas over time without requiring all the data consumers to be changed.
• Leverages ongoing research with Air Force related to system interoperability

DDWS Project Management Update• Conducted project kickoff meeting (virtual) – 28 April 2017• Presentation at SAWE meeting – 22 May 2017
• Held partial team meeting• Attended SNAME ESWBS Workshop – 1 June 2017
• Met with personnel from NAVSEA and Newport News • Working with ATI to establish project SharePoint site – 9 June
2017• Planning site visit to Newport News for July

DDWS Notional Requirements• A user on the mobile app will be able to filter the items in a
compartment by SWBS, i.e. hide SWBS 100 (Hull, structure, etc.)• A user on a mobile app will be able to filter and look at specific
SWBS groups, i.e. see all electrical components in a compartment• A user on a mobile app will be able to filter by weight, i.e. look at
only items greater than 10 kg• A user on a mobile app will be able to see the items in a
compartment that add up to a specific percentage, i.e. the app will only show those items that add up to 90% of the weight in the compartment

DDWS Notional Requirements, cont.• These filters would be independent, i.e. a user wants to see the
items that add up to 90% but can filter that list to not show SWBS 100 or only show SWBS 300
• The policies should be able to be set on the server side and passed down to the mobile app
• Implement a new state for an item which allows it to be accepted but not necessarily visually confirmed, accepted items would not keep a compartment from being finished unless the policy (i. e. 90% of the weight of the compartment excluding SWBS 100 has been visually confirmed)

DDWS Technology Transfer Activities• Regular status briefings at NSRP meetings• Presentation at industry events:
• Society of Allied Weight Engineers (SAWE) – 20-25 May 2017• SNAME ESWBS Workshop – 1 June 2017• SNAME• ShipTech• NSRP Day at NAVSEA
• The ultimate long-term goal of Praeses is to have a viable product that provides this capability to the entire industry

DDWS Development Update• Updating development environment and code libraries to support
the latest versions of C#, Xamarin, iOS, and Android• Testing the application as an Android application and handling the
device-specific issues • Modifying the UI to handle styles consistently across the
platforms• Adding enhanced application navigation logic• Addressing issue with the Transverse Center of Gravity being
incorrectly applied across multiple items• Analyzing methods of calculating item location based on non-
rectangular compartment boundariesCategory B Data – Government Purpose RightsDistribution Unlimited/Approved for Public Release
DDWS Project Risks• The range of potential sources of data across multiple yards,
programs, and lifecycle stages• How to handle yards not using Shipweight? Specifically, Conrad• Ability to handle odd-shaped compartments• Relating compartments to boundaries• Potential difference in operating environments – information
security requirements
