ANALOG HEARING AIDS vs. DIGITAL HEARING AIDS

Previously, all hearing aids were analog, simply amplifying incoming sounds capable of only minor adjustments to pitch and

loudness. What you put in was what you got out – simply louder.

The problem with analog is that all sounds, including background noises, are amplified. Digital technology, however uses computer

processing. Incoming sounds are converted into snapshots – digital codes – that are easily manipulated to be customized to a

BANDS, CHANNELS, AND MEMORIES (OH MY!)

This ability to fine-tune also allows for reduction of feedback and

background noise. Sound quality can be improved by modifications to the hearing aid’s bands, channels, and

memories. Bands are pitch ranges that can be adjusted. Channels permit compression to be adjusted across pitch ranges.

Compression is the limiting of over-amplification of loud sounds at specific pitches. Multiple memories/programs may also be

available to a patient with digital technology. The more

sophisticated the digital hearing instrument, the greater amount

of bands, channels, and memories are typically available.
