Digital Hearing Aids with Multiple Programs: An

Introduction

Listening to a person speaking in a

quiet room is extremely different

from attempting to hear a

conversation in a packed

restaurant. The majority of digital

hearing aids can adjust to distinct

conditions like these by using an

assortment of “listening programs”.

These programs give your hearing

aid the flexibility to help you hear

at your best in a wide range of situations.

Your audiologist will initially recommend you allow the hearing aid to utilize

automatic features to identify the acoustics of your environment. Current

hearing aid technology is incredibly sophisticated and is often efficient in

making changes for you. If an individual determines scenarios where he or

she would like to override automatic functions of the aids, then personalized

programs can be added. The programming software will give the audiologist

the ability to “fine-tune” the way your hearing aid processes sound for any

given environment. When you start wearing your device, these programs

can be accessed manually or automatically to match whatever situation you

find yourself in.

There are many different types of listening programs that can be accessed

through your hearing aid. You can access programs that reduce feedback,

help shift high frequencies to lower ones (making them more comfortable to

hear), help block out background noise, and help make speech patterns in

quiet environment clearer. Your audiologist can work with you to help

determine which programs are most appropriate for your individual

situation.

The method you use to access these different programs varies from device

to device. Some hearing aids are sold with a small external controller that

allows you to switch from program to program as well as access other

features. You may be able to switch from program to program via a small

switch, a remote control, or your device may determine the best program for

the situation without requiring your input.

A hearing aid with multiple listening programs can help you enjoy a more

comfortable and natural listening experience. It is important to note that

with current technology the automatic capabilities of hearing aids often

eliminate the need for specific programs.

If you have questions regarding your current hearing aid settings and the

ability for programs, please call our office to make an appointment.
