Project Title: Type terminology, classifications, and selection

Duration: Approximately 60 minutes

Software: PowerPoint

Description: This project covers important terms for using type. It begins with a PDF presentation introducing type and a discussion of the five main classifications of typefaces. Following the introduction, each participant will attempt to select the most appropriate typeface from a provided list to format a variety of messages; this will be completed in PowerPoint. The group will review the choices made and discuss the most appropriate uses for each of the basic 5 classifications of type.

1The Digital Literacy program begins by focusing on the Design Principle of Alignment. With this module, users are given a presentation that illustrates the dos and don’ts of alignment. They are then asked to critique poorly designed documents and improve upon those files in the appropriate software.

After mastering the basics of alignment, the principles of Repetition, Proximity and Unity are addressed. These are essential to understand because they help designers focus on consistency of look and feel, a concept that translates to any type of digital media design application. Participants analyze inadequately designed documentsand correct them based on their newly found knowledge.

The module then transitions to Design Principles of Balance, Contrast and Whitespace. Participants see these concepts in action and are asked to turn poorly designed documents into a correct format.

The final segment of Module 1 focuses on Perspective, Lighting Economy and Proportion. Users are asked to examine, rate and improve upon portraits for use in a professional website.

In the first training exercise of Module 2, Type Terminology, Classifications and Selection, users learn the five main classifications of typefaces. After participants become familiar with the five key categories, they are asked to select the most appropriate typeface toformat a variety of messages.

The module then moves forward to Font Styles – Mixing, Size, and Line Length. Users learn how to mix fonts and adjust type size and line length to achieve optimum results. Participants use these guidelines to applytype style variations to improve an advertising flyer.

Printers are redefining themselves as they help their customers solve various communications problems with print and other media… They can’t be looking backward; they have to be looking forward, and be open to learning new skill sets and be flexible about what they are willing to do toget into the industry or move up the career path.

Students next become acquainted with Line Spacing. Also known as leading, line spacing includes both the space between the lines of a paragraph and the space before and after a paragraph. Users learn best practices and are asked to apply a variety of line spacing options to an advertising flyer.

Learning the basics of Type Alignment follows. Participants apply a variety of alignment options to the text of an advertising flyer, bring graphic elements into the layout and review the options for handling element alignment.

Module 2 concludes with a focus on Type Readability. Type Readability covers the various challenges with type that can make it difficult to read, such as alack of contrast, small size and poor choice of type direction. Users are asked to improve sample PowerPoint slides to make them readable.

Module 3 begins with the Introduction to RGB and CMYK Color, familiarizing students with the basic color wheel for working in digital media. Once the basics are covered, users learn the Additive and Subtractive Color Theory, which is demonstrated by creating colors using various applications. HSB and Pantone Color is also covered within this module.

The third training exercise within Module 3, Working with Web Color, explains the basis for hexadecimal color and howto use it in common color pickers. Thisis important information to understand, as web-safe colors must be used forthe design of websites, mobile devices and digital animations.

The module then transitions to Color Combinations, where participants use a range of programs to create color themes. The Kuler color selection system is used to demonstrate how to create a variety of color palettes, including analogous, complementary and monochromatic.

Module 3 wraps up with Color Meanings. In this exercise, users learn why properly chosen colors can help convey meaning. In addition, all previous exercises willbe summarized and used to apply the appropriate color models and color pickers.

A graphic designer must whip up a brochure that is easy to read. That’s utility. But at its most effective, her brochure must also transmit ideas or emotions that the words themselves cannot convey. That’s significant.

“ The graphic communications industry is facing very serious challenges…but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of life and opportunity in our future.”

Module 4 kicks off with the Introduction to Databases and Spreadsheets. Exercises compare spreadsheets to databases and point out both the strengths andweaknesses of each. Database fields, records, tables, relationships, data entry, importing and searching are highlighted in this exercise.

Users transition next to Reporting and Sharing Information, where they learn how to create basic layouts and reports using FileMaker Pro. Exercises demonstrate howto export records into a variety of formats for use in other programs and how to share data via web and mobile devices.

Merging Data, the next topic in this series, teaches how to create a basic mail-merged letter. Participants are shown how these same principles can be applied to a more graphically rich data merge to create numbered raffle tickets.

With a solid understanding of database layout in hand, students are ready for Personalized Images. Within this section, users learn the steps involved in creating and using VDP software for personalized images that can be used to design and create personalized image templates.

Concluding Module 4 is PURLs, which stands for Personalized URLs. The PURLs training exercise demonstrates how to create PURLs using various software applications.

Module 5 starts off by focusing on Variable Data Printed (VDP) Tickets, and introduces VDP software and the workflow required to create a simple VDP document.

After participants understand VDP software, the program moves onto VDP Loyalty Club Cards. This section provides the knowledge required to create a loyalty club card with multiple personalized elements. It also introduces VDP rules for variable text and graphic elements, reviews imposition for multiple-up documents and adds the use of crop marks for accurate cutting.

The next section of Module 5 is VDP Mailers. This training exercise demonstrates how to create a personalized mailer. It also highlightsthe creation of seven different VDP rules for the incorporation of variable text and graphic elements.

The final module, VDP Post Cards, demonstrates the use of personalized images, the incorporation of PURLs, and the creation of a Quick Response (QR) code.
