    It is a well known fact that whatever you see, or whatever you hear always remain in your mind. Its justthat the link which can retrieve this information is lost. That means, there is nothing like a bad memory, its justtrained or untrained memory (we will cover this in detail soon). So, for all those people who think, they havebad memory, please take that thought out of your mind, because all humans beings are born with equally goodmemory (exceptions are some people with medical problems).

    The human brain has amazingly humongous capacity to memorize things and here we will learn how toutilize this unexplored and untouched power. We promise you, by the time you finish this chapter you would beproud to say that you have a good memory.

    Trained and untrained memory

    As we discussed above, there is nothing like a bad memory, its just trained or untrained memory. Thereis a specific pattern in which our mind operates, and most of us are unaware of this, that is why we are unable toutilize the enormous memory capacity we have.

    We will try to explain this by stating an example:

    Imagine you meet a stranger in a party and he tells you his name (john) but unfortunately you are notgood at remembering the names, and maybe you will feel embarrassed next time you meet him and you dontremember his name. But if you link it with another friend whose name is also john then, we are sure you willnever forget that strangers name.

    If you read the above example carefully, you will find the real Secret of memory. The secret of memoryis Linking of thoughts or in other words Association. We will learn several different tricks to memorize different

    So, its your memory which is helping you read this book right now. You dont realize it, because yourmemory has become your habit, and it works like an automatic engine now.

    In other words, if you lose your memory, you will have to start learning each and everything right fromscratch, like a new born baby. You would have to relearn things like, how to change clothes, how to shave, how

    to apply makeup or how to drive a car. So, you can imagine how much is already stored in your memory.

    First of all I would like to state that you have already taken an important step towards developing a bettermemory by starting this course, this shows that you have interest & desire in improving your memory and youalready have started working towards it.

    Now the only thing you need to work on is to develop trust in your own existing memory power.     We want to show you, that you can immediately start to remember as you've never remembered before. Wedon't believe that anyone with an untrained memory can possibly remember twenty unassociated items, in asequence, after hearing or seeing them only once.

    Even if you dont believe, you will be able to accomplish it just by reading this chapter for a while.

    List of items to remember:

    If you see the above list carefully, you will find that all these words are very common and we use in oureveryday life.

    Before going into actual memorizing, we must explain that your trained memory will be based almostentirely on mental pictures or images. These mental pictures will be easily recalled if they are made as ridiculousas you can possibly make them. You will be able to memorize these twenty items in sequence in a surprisinglyshort time.

    There is a saying that method is the mother of memory. That means if you know the method of storingthe information in your brain, there is nothing in this world practically which you cannot remember. So, you willlearn now, what we call the Linking method of memory. I've told you that your trained memory will consistmostly of ridiculous mental images, so let's start by making ridiculous mental images of the above twenty items.We are going to help you with the first few words and then you will continue on your own.

    Don't be worried, it is a child's play; as a matter of fact it is almost like a game.

    The first thing you have to do is to get a picture of the first item, "telephone" in your mind. You all knowwhat a telephone isso just "see" it in your mind's eye. We have already explained you that in order toremember anything, it must be associated in some way to something you already know or remember. The thingthat you already know is the item, "telephone".

    Now the next item you want to remember is, "pin" Now, here is your first and most important steptowards your trained memory. You must now associate or link telephone to/with pin. The association must be asridiculous as possible. For example, you might imagine that while you are talking on telephone there is a pinwhich comes out from the speaker phone and pokes into your ear. See that you feel pain while talking on the

    phone due to the poking pin or as another example you may imagine that to dial a number on your telephone setyou use a pin instead of your fingers. Now I am sure that whenever you think of telephone it will remind you ofthe pin.

    Now that you have associated telephone with a pin, lets concentrate on you next item which is table.So, now you have to establish a relationship between a pin and a table. Imagine that table is standing on a pininstead of four legs; you can imagine anything you want, but make sure you try to make it as funny as possible,because the funny thoughts are easy to retrieve.

    Now, lets continue with the forth item cigarette. Imagine that the table is smoking a cigarette or may bethe table is standing on four cigarettes instead of legs. The fifth item is pencil, imagine that you are smoking apencil instead of a cigarette. Make sure that you choose a funny association, because if you choose somethingwhich is too logical your brain would not be able to remember it easily. Mark my words for that!

    Now that we are sure you know the technique yourself, we will continue with you for the one last wordwhich is headphones. Imagine that you have a gigantic & alive pencil (as big as a man) which is enjoying theloud music from the head phones on the head. Remember that its very important to visualize the picture in yourminds eye because mind can store images better than the words.

    Now we want you to continue till the last word in the same way, then put down the book for ten minutesand try to recall all the words in the same sequence. Write them down on a paper and match them with theoriginal list, and give yourself 1 point for each correct sequence.

    Well, we are sure you will score full marks, but dont worry even if you dont. Keep practicing and you willmaster this technique sooner than you think.

    The good thing about this technique is that after practicing it for a few weeks, it will turn into a habit andyou dont have to put additional efforts to remember similar lists, everything will become automatic.

    Observation

    Nothing exists until or unless it is observed.

    It would be right to say, nothing exist until you observe it. If you go to a new place and you dont observeanything, you would never be able to recall what you saw there.

    That means the observation and memory goes hand in hand, to memorize anything, first you need toobserve it and then memorize it. The observation is always the first step and then comes retaining.

    If you want, we can start right away! To help you improve your observation skills through the followingDrills.

    Drill 1:Probably, at the moment you are sitting in your personal room and reading this book and you must be

    pretty familiar with the room.

    So take out a pen and a paper, start writing whatever you think is there in the room without looking atthem. It could be a table, chair, ashtray, pen, pencil, computer or whatever you can think of.

    Now look at the room and match the list, try to observe new things, which you probably have seen

    countless times, but never noticed earlier. Go out of the room and start writing new things again below the samelist, I am sure your list must be much longer this time.

    Keep repeating this exercise until u cover each and everything from your room.

    Drill 2: Try this drill when you are at a new place or anywhere out of your house. Take an example of your officeplace, your friends place or maybe a railway station.

    Have a look around you, just a quick look, and then close your eyes. Now try to observe each andeverything you see in your mental picture, imagine you are still watching the scene with your minds eye.

    Start describing the smallest thing you remember, a computer, some people around, color of the clothesthey are wearing, some photos on the news board or whatever you can recall but make sure you do not openyour eyes until you are exhausted with all the things you can think of.

    Now open your eyes, look at the scene again, now give some more time at it and close your eyes again.Repeat the same drill.

    The good thing about this drill is you can practice it whenever you want and wherever you are.

    The above two drills will stretch your mind to the maximum limit. It works same like our body muscles.We go to gym to exercise and the longer we continue, our stamina improves every time. In the same way, thesedrills will let us stretch our brain muscles and we will start observing more, more and more

    By the time, you will realize that your ability to observe things is improving. You would be able to observethings which generally no one observes in one go.

    The Singing Technique

    We are sure; you remember that nursery Rhyme, right? But do you ever wonder why and how do youstill remember it? Even after so many years?

    Well, thats another memory secret, The Singing. Whenever you sing a song it affects yourauditory memory and creates an imaginary link to the words in your mind. Due to which, even if youdont remember the words but sound or rhythm, words automatically come to your mind.

    Thats a powerful memory technique, and now we will learn how we can use it in our daily lifefor benefits.

    The idea is again association, which happens automatically in case of songs. But now as weknow the technique, we can also associate it intentionally.

    Say you have to learn a piece of text:-

    A Dog and his roleLooking up every PoleNose in every holeBlack as a piece of Coal

    A Dog and his role

    In the above text, just read it normally (no singing), close the book and try to recall. Probability is that

    you wont recall it word to word (if you dont have a trained memory).

    This time, read the same text in the singing way. Make it loud & clear; try to make it as funny aspossible. Now, close the book again, and try to recall! I am sure, this time you would surely recall eachand every word ditto.

    The same technique you can use to remember any kind of data like: - Phone Numbers,

    shopping list, your presentations, short stories and even difficult language vocabulary. But make

    sure, the idea is to keep practicing. The more you practice, the more effective this technique will

    become. Moreover we feel this is a fun filled way of learning.

    To make notes on a subject using a Mind Map, draw it in the following way:

    1. Write the title of the subject in the center of the page, and draw a circle around it.2. For the major subject subheadings, draw lines out from this circle. Label these lines with the subheadings.3. If you have another level of information belonging to the subheadings above, draw these and link them to the

    subheading lines.4. Finally, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate heading line and label them.

    As you come across new information, l ink it in to the Mind Map appropriately.

    A complete Mind Map may have main topic lines radiating in all directions from the center. Sub-topics and factswill branch off these, like branches and twigs from the trunk of a tree. You do not need to worry about thestructure produced, as this will evolve of its own accord.

    Note that the sample Mind Maps are only to help show how they are created. All we are showing is that majorheadings radiate from the center, with lower level headings and facts branching off from the higher levelheadings.

    While drawing Mind Maps by hand is appropriate in most of the cases. Still some good software tools areavailable online to improve the process by helping to you to produce high quality Concept Maps, which caneasily be edited and redrafted for the business and professional work.

    Improving your Mind Maps

    Once you understand how to make notes in the Mind Map format, you can develop your own conventions to takethem further. The following suggestions may help to increase their effectiveness:

    Use single words or simple phrases for information: Most words in normal writing are padding, as they ensurethat facts are conveyed in the correct context, and in a format that is pleasant to read. In your own Mind Maps,single strong words and meaningful phrases can convey the same meaning more potently. Excess words justclutter the Mind Map.

    Print words: Joined up or indistinct writing can be more difficult to read.

    Use color to separate different ideas; this will help you to separate ideas where necessary. It also helps youto visualize of the Mind Map for recall. Color also helps to show the organization of the subject.

    Use symbols and images; where a symbol or picture means something to you, use it. Pictures can help youto remember information more effectively than words.

    Using cross-linkages; information in one part of the Mind Map may relate to another part. Here you can drawin lines to show the cross-linkages. This helps you to see how one part of the subject affects another.

    Key points:

    Mind mapping is an extremely effective method of taking notes. Mind Maps show not only facts, but alsothe overall structure of a subject and the relative importance of individual parts of it. They help you to associate

    ideas and make connections that might not otherwise make.

    If you do any form of research or note taking, try experimenting with Mind Maps. You will find themsurprisingly effective!

    Introduction

    Brainstorming is a useful and popular tool that you can use to develop highly creative solutionsto a problem. It is particularly helpful when you need to break out of stale, established patterns ofthinking, so that you can develop new ways of looking at things. This can be when you need todevelop new opportunities, where you want to improve the service that you offer, or when existingapproaches just aren't giving you the results you want.

    When used with your team, it helps you bring the experience of all team members into playduring problem solving.

    This increases the richness of solutions explored (meaning that you can find better solutions tothe problems you face, and make better decisions.) It can also help you get buy in from teammembers for the solution chosen - after all, they have helped create that solution.

    Brainstorming and Lateral Thinking

    Brainstorming is a lateral thinking process. It asks that people come up with ideas and thoughtsthat seem at first to be a bit shocking. You can then change and improve them into ideas that areuseful, and often stunningly original.

    During brainstorming sessions there should therefore be no criticism of ideas: You are trying toopen up possibilities and break down wrong assumptions about the limits of the problem. Judgmentsand analysis at this stage will stunt idea generation.

    Ideas should only be evaluated at the end of the brainstorming session - you can then exploresolutions further using conventional approaches.

    Group Brainstorming

    Group brainstorming can be very effective as it uses the experience and creativity of all

    members of the group. When individual members reach their limit on an idea, another member's

    creativity and experience can take the idea to the next stage. Therefore, group brainstorming tends to

    develop ideas in more depth than individual thinking.

    How to use Brainstorming:

    To run a group brainstorming session effectively, do the following:

    Define the problem you want solution for, clearly, and lay out any criteria to be met;

    Keep the session focused on the problem.

    Ensure that no one criticizes or evaluates ideas during the session. Criticism introduces an

    element of risk for group members when putting forward an idea. This stifles creativity and cripplesthe free running nature of a good brainstorming session;

    Encourage an enthusiastic, uncritical attitude among members of the group. Try to get everyone tocontribute and develop ideas, including the quietest members of the group.

    Let people have fun brainstorming. Encourage them to come up with as many ideas as possible,from solidly practical ones to wildly impractical ones. Welcome creativity.

    Ensure that no thought is followed for too long.

    Encourage people to develop other people's ideas, or to use other ideas to create new ones.

    Appoint one person to note down ideas that come out of the session. A good way of doing this is touse a flip chart. This should be studied and evaluated after the session.

    If possible, participants in the brainstorming process should come from as wide a range of

    disciplines as possible. This brings a broad range of experience to the session and helps to make it

    more creative.

    Brainstorming is a great way of generating radical ideas. During the brainstorming process

    there is no criticism of ideas, as free rein is given to people's creativity (criticism and judgment cramps

    creativity). This often makes group brainstorming sessions enjoyable experiences, which are great for

    bringing team members together.

    Individual brainstorming is best for generating many ideas, but tends to be less effective atdeveloping them. Group brainstorming tends to develop fewer ideas, but takes each idea further.

    Daydream and Defocus

    This is a special technique, in which we train our mind to reach alpha level quickly. We can usethis technique to relax almost instantly.

    Keep your eyes open and keep them approximately at 20 degrees of your horizontal plane ofsight. And try to defocus them, so that you see the blur picture with your eyes. Now change yourconcentration from your eyes to your mind. Soon you will feel as if you do not see anything with youreyes but with your mind. Now you are in alpha level. Keep your mind still. Be there for as long as youwant. This technique will help you relax quickly or even instantly.

    Three finger technique

    Three Finger Technique helps you reach the alpha level quickly. After you practice it forsome time, it will become faster and faster.

    Technique: Bring your left-thumb, index and middle finger together and keep them touched for awhile, you will automatically enter the alpha level. This is a natural way of reaching alpha level. For thefirst few days you might not feel it, but by the time, it will be more effective.This technique will help you relax your body and your mind in a natural way. You can use thistechnique when you have presentations, before public speaking or whenever you need to relaxquickly.

    Breathing exercise

    The way you breathe affects your whole body. Full, deep breathing is a good way to reducetension & stress. Breathing exercises were adapted by the ancient of yoga. It is a very efficient

    technique for achieving a deep state of relaxation quickly.

    Step 1: Breathing from your abdomen, inhale through your nose, slowly count till fiveonetwothreefourfive as you inhale.

    Step 2: Pause and hold your breath and count till five.

    Step 3: Exhale slowly, through your nose or mouth, to a count till five again (or more if it takes youlonger). Be sure to exhale fully.

    When youve exhaled completely, take two breaths in your normal rhythm, and then repeat

    steps 1 through 3 in the cycle above.

    Keep up the exercise for at least three to five minutes. Keep your breathing smooth and regularthroughout the exercise, without gulping in breaths or breathing out suddenly. Each time you exhale,you mentally repeat, relax or let go or any other relaxing word what feels good for you.

    A story goes like this: Next week an important interview! Fears and, worries make a start

    automatically, when its about a job, you desperately want and the mind starts automatically acting in a

    silly way, what all they can ask? And from now on two way conversations starts in mind, the negative

    self talk, what to say? How to show them how good you are? The self talk that possibly you arent

    good enough, or dont have the right qualities. Days are wasted by thinking about this including the

    sleepless nights and tension.

    Now look at the opposite side, why should you waste your time and days thinking about this?

    Or change this habit of negative self talk, when you have done everything you have to do, and then

    just say, Im going to get this job, thats all. Remember that there cant be something else in your mind

    Then we have the fears to lose the safety and the security and we make the choice for a

    secure life, a life where you know what tomorrow brings and a life without risk, the happiness level is

    low and not much of excitement and challenge to get a fulfilling life.

    People often try to mask their fears with anger; the key is to replace fear with faith, belief inyourself and the power of the good. Underneath a persons anger theres often another emotion, suchas hurt or guilt. To work and dissolve this emotion it will give confidence and refuel your energy.

    What Is Anger?

    We have lots of emotions. At different times, you may be happy, sad, hurt or feeling guilty.Anger is just another way we feel. It's perfectly normal and a human emotion to be angry at times, infact, it's important to get angry sometimes. But anger must be released in the right way.

    What can make you feel angry?

    There can be more things what makes you angry. You may get angry when something doesn'tgo the way you want. Possible you feel anger when others dont understand you or your sport team

    loses an important game or you have lost an important project. Also frustration can lead to anger.
