Raster GraphicsRaster Graphics are digital images made up of bitmaps that are made up of pixels. Each one of these pixels records the information for one section of the image. For example if there are 1 million pixels in an image there will be 1 million pieces of recorded information. Raster Graphics have a fixed resolution which means when the image is scaled up it results in loss of quality in the image.

Vector GraphicsVector graphics are made up of paths and strokes. They work by having a start and end point that creates a shape and when the image is scaled up vector graphics fill in the gap to prevent image quality loss.

JPEGStands For Joint Photographic Experts Group

Used For/Example JPEGs are used for photographs mostly.

Advantage One advantage of using JPEG is that they create smaller files by compressing the image.Another advantage is that a JPEG is compatible across multiple platforms Another advantage is that JPEGS take up less storage space on your computer.Another advantage is that a JPEG can display millions of colours

Disadvantage One disadvantage of using JPEGs is that when you save as a JPEG the file size is reduced which will lead to loss of quality of the image.Lossless editing can decrease the image quality

TIFFStands For Tagged Image File Format

Used For/Example TIFF files are mostly used when you are using raster graphics . It is mostly used when you are going to print something.

Advantage One advantage of using TIFF is that there is no loss of quality when saving your work Another advantage of using this format is that it is compatible with most platforms

Disadvantage One disadvantage of using a TIFF files is that it uses a large file size and takes up a lot of storage.A disadvantage of using TIFFs is that you need to have a good computer in order to access the file.Another disadvantage is that not many websites support TIFF.Another disadvantage is when uploading a TIFF file it can take a long time.

GIFStands For Graphics Interchange Format

Used For/Example GIFs are used to show lots of frames to show an animation.

Advantage An advantage of using a GIF is that they are easy to upload online because they have a small file size.Another advantage of using a GIF is that they support transparent background which means that can be played over something else.Another advantage of using a GIF is that it can show and provide more information than a still image.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of using a GIF is that they only support 256 colours so they look low quality.Another disadvantage of using a GIF is that you can not edit the file once you have made a GIF. Another disadvantage of using a GIF is that in order to view it online you need an internet connection.Another disadvantage of using a GIF is that it is time consuming to made in comparison to a still image.

BMPStands For Bitmap Image File

Used For/Example BMPs are used for raw image raster files.

Advantage An advantage of using a BMP file is that it is supported across most platformsAnother advantage of using a BMP file is that there is no loss when the file is compressed or saved multiple times.Another advantage of using BMP is that they produce high quality images.

Disadvantage An disadvantage of using a BMP is that it uses a large file size that takes up a lot of storage.Another disadvantage of using BMP file is that image quality is lost when making the image bigger or smaller.

PSDStands For Photoshop Document

Used For/Example They are used to edit and manipulate images. For example it is used to create magazine covers.

Advantage A advantage of using PSD files is that that they can save different layers so you can go back to the file and edit it.Another advantage of using PSD file is that it keeps all the detail of the image and does not suffer any image quality lossAnother advantage of using a PSD file is that it supports transparency so you can place image over it or in the background.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of PSD is that you need to own the software to access the document because it is only recognized by Photoshop.A disadvantage of using PSD files is that they are large files that take up a lot of storage.

AIStands For Abdobe Illustrator Art

Used For/Example AI is used digitally and in print to create logos and graphics mainly for company's.

AI is used to create vector images in print and digitally. It is mainly used to create company logos

Advantage An advantage of using AI is that is can be scaled up without loss of quality because it used vectors.Another advantage of using AI files is that they are compatible with other Abdobe programs such as Photoshop so you can transfer the files between each other.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of using AI is that you need the correct software to view it.

FLAStands For Flash File

Used For/Example FLA files are used to create animations and games.

Advantage A advantage of using a FLA file is that you can make high quality files without the large file size. Another advantage of using a FLA file is that you can fit a lot of information into an animation as opposed to a image.Another advantage of using FLA files is that you can use sound and video together.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of using FLA is that you might not be able to view it if you have a slow internet connection

Page 13: Digital%20 graphics%20pro forma[1] 2015

WMFStands For Windows Metafile

Used For/Example WMF files are used for clipart. WMF files are

Advantage A advantage of using a WMF is that the vector images can be scaled with no loss to the quality.Another advantage of using WMF files is that they have very small file sizes. Another advantage of using WMF files is that they can transfer between applications.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of using WMF file is that they can only be accessed on windows computers.Another disadvantage of using WMF files is that they can pixilate because they have bitmap components.

CompressionDefinition Compression is the reduction in size of

the file.

Advantage An advantage of using compression is that you can make your files smaller. This means you can easily send and open them through the internet.Another advantage of compression with vector images is that it is has lossless compression. An advantage of using compression is that it leads to faster file transfer.Another advantage of compression is that it takes up less storage.

Disadvantage A disadvantage of using compression is that it is lossy with bitmap images. A disadvantage of using compression is that it can be time consuming to do.

Image CaptureMethod Scanner

How is it used for image capture of graphics

It digitises images, photos, drawings or anything you can put in the scanner.

Method CameraHow is it used for image capture of

graphicsYou can take a photograph

Method Graphics TabletHow is it used for image capture of

graphicsYou can draw what you want by using a pen. This allows you to draw with more precision than just using the pen.

OptimisingWhy would you optimise? One reason I would optimise is to make

sure that the file can be easily loeaded online.Another reason I would optimise is because it would take up less storage.

How can you optimise? One way I can optimise is by reducing the image size. You can also reduce the bit depth. This means reducing the amount of colours that are shown in a image.Reducing resolution reduces the amount of pixels in the picture. You can also compress the image. This will reduce the image quality though if it is a bitmap image.

Advantage to optimising One advantage to optimising an image is that it can be easily accessed online Another advantage is that you can send your image quicker.

Disadvantage to optimising One disadvantage to optimising is that it will have a larger file size so it will take ages to upload.Another disadvantage is that it is more time consuming to do.

File SizeWhat could affect a Working Scale (Photoshop) document file size?

a higher colour depthHigh resolution Reducing the image sizeCompressing the fileHaving less components

How could you reduce the file size of a Working Scale document without

affecting quality?

Reduce the bit depthIf it is a vector image reduce the picture size Try and compress the image if it is a vector

What is an advantage of scaling up images before exporting?

If the image was a vector there would be no loss in quality It would be easier to see

What is a disadvantage of scaling up images before exporting?

If the image was a bitmap it would decrease the image quality. It would be harder to see

File Naming ConventionsWhat naming conventions could you use when creating your video game assets?

• Character 1• Character 2• Background 1• Environment 1• Scenery 1I would name my assets what they were and add a number to them depending on how many assets were the same.

Why is it a good idea to accurately name your assets?

So everything is organized. This makes it easier to change anything if you go back to edit because you have named anything. It speeds thing up when you are editing your product because you don’t need to click on loads of assets until you find the one you want because they are labelled.

Page 21: Digital%20 graphics%20pro forma[1] 2015

Asset ManagementWhy would you use folders when storing

your assets? So that you know where all your assets are. This is beneficial because when going back to edit or change my assets I know where to find them.

What folders would you create and what would you save within them

Backgrounds – Sunny, cloudy

characters – Character 1, character 2

Text – Cover lines, Masthead
