PART A: NARRATIVE REPORT 1. PROJECT OVERVIEW

DIL Canada supports five schools in the DIL Schools network; these are located in Khairpur District, rural Sindh, and North Nazimabad and Orangi Town in Karachi. The beneficiaries are all children of low income communities, mostly girls, who do not have access to quality education.

2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 2.A. Amendments to approved Project Proposal None. 2.B. Activities and Results

The main activity of the final quarter was the midterm exams conducted in November. All DIL Schools followed the same exam schedule to ensure accuracy of assessment. Several training workshops were also held in both project areas. Several extracurricular activities were also carried out such as the observance of important National days.

In addition, the trainers held cluster reviews in various project schools to observe classroom practices and provide support and guidance to teachers where required.

JUNIOR 5: Enrolment: 132 Girls: 69 Boys: 63 Teachers: 10 Library, English and Urdu teachers are focusing on reading with comprehension of students; all teachers are giving an extra ten minutes in their daily routine for reading and comprehension twice a week, this is showing an impact on reading and comprehension improvement. Parents meetings are conducted every month with different agendas. DIL Science trainer visited the school in this quarter, observed the Science teacher and guided her with regards to lesson plan and topic demonstration. Library classes are being conducted regularly; both teachers and students are borrowing books to read. Book club activity was launched in summer vacation and it increased the students’ interest in reading books of their choice. Seven computer systems are present in the school and are being used by the students and teachers. A slow learners’ class was also organized in the summer vacation for grade 1-3 students to help them with their reading and writing skills. Co-curricular activities: Labor Day: Students made posters to highlight the issue of Child Labor. A Quiz program on the same subject was also organized between grade IV and V students. Mothers’ Day: Mothers’ Day was celebrated in the school. Students of grade IV & V made cards and gave to grade 1 students to present to their mothers as the little ones are still learning to write and draw. All mothers were invited to the school, and in a simple ceremony, students wished them, performed a tableau and recited poems in their honour.

Three PBL IT activities were designed and completed in this quarter. Details are given below: Get to know others: The activity was about the different provincial cultures of Pakistan; students collected information and made comparisons identifying similarities and differences, especially with regards to weddings and special occasion celebrations. All the findings were posted on the online forum and also shared with schoolmates. Global Art: Images of Caring: Students prepared cards with reusable material, which enhanced their creativity and art skills. They also learnt the importance of recycling waste. Special Places: For this project, students visited the PAF Museum and wrote articles about the historical knowledge they acquired. They then prepared a Power Point presentation to post on iEARN forum, for which they were awarded certificates. DIL PRIMARY SCHOOL, LAL SHAHBAZ NAGAR CAMPUS: Enrollment: 185 Girls: 115 Boys: 70 Teachers: 10 The biannual objectives are being followed by the teachers in their respective subjects. Reading

words with high frequency is being followed by Nursery to grade 3. Concepts, technical words and

phrases are being taught. ECE materials and circle time is being practiced effectively. DEAR activity

is being enjoyed by all students and teachers weekly.

In 2 classrooms ventilators are installed for light and air

passage. Two wooden shelves have been received and set

up in the library for arrangements of books.

On 15th October students of grade 5 celebrated hand washing day; they made speeches and

demonstrated the correct steps for washing hands. They gave an informative presentation

about diseases that could stem from poor hygiene and the precautions to be taken.

Teachers’ Day:

Students of Nursery to grade 6 celebrated Teachers’ Day by

making cards and presenting cards them to their teachers;

they sang songs and poems in honor of the teachers.

Drawing Competition:

A competition was arranged between students from KG to

grade 4. They were free to draw anything of their choice

using colour pencils. Winners were given small appreciation

prizes according to grade levels.

Iqbal Day:

Students were given information about the

personality and the contribution of Dr. Allama

Iqbal by the library teacher during library time.

A writing competition was arranged for the

students of grades 5 & 6 on the topic of Dr.

Iqbal’s poetry.

In this project, students of grade 6 used library books and researched the net to create a pictorial story book. Working in groups, they created a story with drawings and decorated the book attractively. Students presented their books in assembly, describing the title, the content and display of their book.

One day in life Students celebrated an iEARN activity by making their one day special for them; for this project they brought different dishes from their homes to eat together for spreading the message of “Live together with love”. Students hosted a program in which they did a role play on stage to give the message of bringing Peace together. The activity was enjoyed equally by the participants as well as the audience.

PTA Meeting:

On 9th December 2015 the Parents’ Teachers Meeting was conducted; it was attended by 91

parents who came to check mid-term exam copies.

- Exercises to improve writing skills

- Awareness regarding personal hygiene and healthy eating habits

Mr. Ghazi Farooq and Mrs. Janet Farooq from DIL Canada visited the campus on 20th Oct 2015.

They appreciated all the efforts put into establishing the school and also praised the teachers’

performance. On 26th Oct 2015, they organized a visit by a local doctor, Dr. Saiqa, to provide

awareness to students regarding hygiene and healthy eating habits. Students enjoyed the

session and promised to act upon the doctor’s advice. The Ghazis also distributed fruits among

the students to reinforce the understanding of a balanced diet plan. The school was also

whitewashed and minor repairs carried out with the support of the Ghazis.

Co curricular activities:

Color Day

To develop the recognition of colors among

nursery and KG students, the school organizes

a Color Day every month. On 12th Dec 2015,

Red Day was celebrated. Teachers showed

their creativity and made some beautiful red

items to share with the students.

APS Students’ Memorial Day:

16th Dec is dedicated to all the martyrs of Army Public School. To commemorate this day,

students sang some motivational verses imparting the message of peace, bravery and

tolerance.

PTA:

Three PTA meetings were conducted this quarter, one every month in which teachers put a lot

of effort. The outcome was 100% as all the parents turned up on the meeting days. The parents

were informed about the academic achievements and weaknesses of their children.

KHAIRPUR The 4th quarter was busy with midterm exams, teachers’ certification ceremonies, 2016 budget preparation and several trainings. Exams were held in November and results sent to Islamabad office for centralized compilation. The following trainings were held this quarter:

2 Science

DIL M&E Officer visited schools to assess the performance of the IT labs and curriculum.

HAMID BHUTTO: Enrolment: 194 Girls: 134 Boys: 60 Teachers: 14 Displays of this school are attractive and informative. Classroom

rules, calendar, students’ data, star sheet of regular and punctual

students, commonly used words are pasted in all classes. Charts of

different subjects English, Science and social studies are also pasted.

Science Teacher focuses on the use of science terminology by

pasting the words/terms with meaning on the classroom displays.

The Math teacher is also using terminology in English with meaning

in Sindhi. Reading and comprehension of English has improved now

in all grades, the teacher is giving extra time to students for reading

and comprehension. The English readers are used twice in a week with

meaning. Students make word books to use the comprehension of new

words. By using commonly used words students are able to read

names on wrappers of toffees, biscuits etc. A mentor program was

initiated in the last quarter for the support of slow learners. This

program proved effective in this school. Students of middle classes i-e

vii, viii give tuitions to the slow learners students of primary classes in

groups at home. Slow learners are now taking interest in studies; they also do their homework

regularly. Tuning protocol is being implemented in the school to encourage teachers’ performance

and support them in areas of teaching, learning and students’ performance.

Teachers are sharing their issues with each other and getting solutions through

discussions. Every teacher, after attending training, shares her experience with

her colleagues. Activity based teaching methods are used by all teachers; the

Urdu teacher conducted an activity Subah ka Samaa with grade 4: To teach the

students about early morning activities in the village, she asked students to

bring some material from home. Next day students were engaged in activities like making lassi and

roti with rice flour; students also ploughed the field. They thoroughly enjoyed the role play.

Co curricular activities: Culture Day:

Students celebrated culture day in school. They performed plays

highlighting the importance of girls’ education, Folk songs and made

speeches. Parents, especially mothers, participated in the program and

appreciated the efforts of the school.

Library updates:

In grade II students performed on the story” I MADE A PICTURE”. Teacher assigned different

characters to students in a group to act and make pictures from story.

During this quarter 198 library books were issued by students and 19 by

teachers. The process of resource sharing continues in this quarter,

students of surrounding Government school also use library and issue

books on every Saturday.

PTA

Two mothers’ meetings were conducted in order to improve the attendance of students and

get cooperation for co-curricular activities. Mothers were invited in the cultural program and

result announcement of the midterm exams. Parents are cooperative and dedicated and they

support the school in the execution of extra-curricular activities.

Displays all subjects:

A corner of displays is updated in all the classes with names of best students

of the week and best teacher of the week. Nursery students made flash

cards of numbers from 1-10.

Implementation of Math & Science terminology:

Math and Science teachers use English terms according to the syllabus.

Reading comprehension of English & Sindhi (1-5 grades):

English teacher takes keen interest in her subject. She is giving extra time to

her students after school. Most of the students have improved their

reading and comprehension through her efforts.

Implementation of commonly used words and small sentences related to daily life.

The words and sentences of daily used are pasted on charts by students with the help of teachers.

the teachers have made the pictures along with actions which help students in understanding. This

practice helps the students in the use of the sentences and words which are on the walls; they can

see and memorize those.

Effective lesson planning (Science and Social Studies):

The lesson planning has been improved by Social Studies/Science teachers with the help of peer

tutors’ assistance. Teachers visited the peer tutor’s school for the support.

Co curricular and extracurricular activities

Certificates distribution ceremony:

Certificates were distributed amongst teachers who

have completed their trainings. In the ceremony

teachers shared their views and experiences from

the trainings. Students also performed on different

activities. Local officials of the Education Department

and community members were also invited.

Field Trip

A trip was held to visit historical places in Khairpur and Sukkur,

(Faiz Mahal, Radio Pakistan, Sachal Library, Bilawal Park).

Students enjoyed the trip and also got information about the

historical places.

Library updates:

Two schools from the surrounding area are also given access to the library as part of DIL’s resource

sharing initiative. During this quarter the best reader of the month award was given to the students.

PTA Meetings:

A meeting was held with the parents to solicit their

cooperation regarding the repair of the floor of 3

classrooms of the school building. The School Officer and

principal conducted the meeting in which parents assured

their assistance for the repair.

3. PROJECT IMPACT

DIL’s projects in both areas have built a good repute for quality education through their network of community schools. The emphasis on teacher training, field support and better administrative practices has helped in creating a strong program.
