February 25, 2016, Quezon City. It was the 30th Anniversary of the 1986 EDSA Revolution. Very early in the morning, thousands of Filipinos gathered in front of the EDSA People Power Monument to celebrate three decades of EDSA Revolution Anniversary. Among those in the crowd were President Benigno S. Aquino III, former President Fidel V. Ramos and DILG Secretary Mel Senen S. Sarmiento. Moments later, two FA-50 Golden Eagle fighter jets of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) loudly roared as they flew in the sky, bringing cheers to the crowd.

Also in attendance were famous Filipino artists Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers who made the atmosphere even more festive as they serenaded the crowd with their beautiful rendition of Filipino patriotic songs. And then the historic Salubungan Program commenced. The Salubungan symbolizes the new generation’s desire to keep aflame the ideals of EDSA. In accordance with this year’s theme “Pagbabago: Ipinaglaban N’yo, Itutuloy Ko!”, students and youth leaders joined multi-sector groups and nuns in the traditional

DILG joins Salubungan for #EDSA30

reenactment of the Salubungan with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). While the Salubungan was taking place, two helicopters dropped yellow and white confetti, much to the delight of the crowd. After a few minutes, fifteen (15) fighter jets flew in triangular formation, releasing colourful smoke up in the air.

After the Salubungan, President Aquino, Bobby Aquino (son of former Senator Agapito “Butz” Aquino), and former President Ramos did the “symbolic victory jump” in remembrance of the time when people jumped with joy after the Marcoses fled Malacañang on February 25, 1986. In his speech, President Aquino said, ”Nawa’y mag-ambagan tayong lahat, upang hindi na kailanman muling manaig ang kadiliman sa Pilipinas. Nawa’y ang kalayaang kay tagal nating minithi ay hinding-hindi na mababawing muli.”
