500th Reformation Anni-versary

On October 31, 1517

Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Pal-ace Church in Wittenberg, Ger-many and started the Reforma-tion. The sound of that ham-mer still echoes today through-out the world. That single defi-ant act reshaped the Church and opened to people the pos-sibility of encountering God through a new lens, one of grace, love and compassion.

Martin Luther strug-gled with the concept of a vengeful punishing God so of-ten portrayed in the Church of his day. Through his study of scripture, particularly the book of Romans, he discovered an-other characteristic of God – that of grace. He spent the rest of his life spearheading a movement protesting some of the teachings of the Church (hence the name Protestants) and promoting the under-standing that God’s love is a free gift for all that cannot be purchased or earned.

Today, that biblical understanding is the founda-tion of our faith in the Lu-theran church as it states in the 4th Article of the Augsburg Con-fession:

The second is a Joint Reformation Celebra-tion with local Lutheran and Roman Catholic congrega-tions hosted by St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at North and 6th Streets in Jim Thorpe on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at 7:00PM. I am really excited about this joint wor-ship as we cross denomina-tional lines to celebrate an important event in the church’s history.

Please consider coming out to either or both of these celebrations. Unless you plan to live for another 500 years, this will be a once in a lifetime op-portunity!

Furthermore, it is taught that we cannot obtain forgiveness of sin and righteousness before God through our merit, work, or satis-factions, but that we receive forgiveness of sin and become right-eous before God out of grace for Christ’s sake through faith when we believe that Christ has suffered for us and that for his sake our sin is forgiven and righteous-ness and eternal life are given to us. For God will regard and reckon this faith as righteous-ness in his sight, as St. Paul says in Romans 3 and 4. This year marks the

500th Anniversary of that his-toric event and to celebrate it there will be two events in our local area.

The first is a Reforma-tion Worship hosted by the Hazleton-Lehighton Mission District to be held Sunday, Octo-ber 29, 2017 at 3:00PM at Christ Lutheran Church, 210 West Green Street, Hazleton, PA 18201. All local Lutheran con-gregations are invited to attend. If you would like to attend but

FOOD PROGRAM

(Formerly Elder Care)

More and more individuals and families, each day, have to make the decision of taking their much needed medications, heating their homes or putting food on their tables. Our mission is to ensure the people of Dinkey Memorial Evangelical Lu-theran Church or residents of East Penn Township. Low-income house-hold, have access to resources for food security and basic nutritional needs. Our food program, each month, provides approximately 2-3 days of groceries for these families to make nutritious meals. The food pantry is funded by your generous donations, as well as, we receive a percentage from various fundraisers to purchase items needed for our monthly distribution. Dona-tions of food, Giant gift cards and monetary donations are greatly needed throughout the year, not just at the holidays. Some suggestions are: canned fruit and vegetables, tuna or any canned meat, spaghetti sauce, noodles or pasta, macaroni & cheese, instant potatoes, rice, applesauce, beans, peanut butter, non-sugared cereals, Jell-o, pudding, or any non-perishable items. Simply Giving The Simply Giving® Program endorsed by Thrivent Financial Bank enables every household or individ-ual to give church offerings through electronic funds transfer (EFT). You may already be using EFT to pay your mortgage, car payments, or insurance premium automatically from your checking or sav-ings account, and now your financial gift to your congregation’s ministries can be handled in the same fashion. It not only simplifies your giving, but it enables the congregation’s budget to better re-flect the expected giving throughout the coming year. Participants can give through a checking account or savings account. Just request an authorization form through the church office or download the form from the church website (http://www.dmlcashfield.com/). On the form, you can decide whether you would like to give weekly, twice a month, or once a month. Options are also available as to how to designate your giv-ing to certain funds. Completed forms should be turned in to either Margie Balliet, our financial secretary, or Pastor Tony. We suggest that you use an effective date of three weeks from the time you complete the form to allow time for paperwork to be processed. Just use your regular offering envelope until that time. Although placing an offering envelope in the offer-ing plate each week is not necessary through Sim-ply Giving®, you may still wish to do so to feel as though you are participating in the collection. Just write “Simply Giving” on your envelope to indi-cate your participation in the program. If you have any questions, please contact either Margie or Pastor Tony.

August Council Highlights

At the August 16, 2017 meeting, the church council:

Updated the driver list for the church van and scheduled the first Sunday pick-up for worship.

Discussed setting up a universal credit card for the congregation.

Explored the possibility of setting up a Blessing Box where nonper-ishable items would be available for people in need 24-hours a day.

Discussed hosting a financial class at the church.

Approved the purchase of a food tray for the Hazleton-Lehighton Mission District Reformation Banquet.

September Council Highlights

At the September 20, 2017 meeting, the church council:

Approved Palmerton Preschool & Daycare’s request to use parking lot and Christian Education building for Trunk-or-Treat on Octo-ber 26.

Set congregation meeting for Sunday, December 3, 2017 following morning worship to pass 2018 budget and elect new council members.

Approved the proposed 2018 Budget to be presented at congrega-tion meeting.

Received $1500.00 donation from member to support youth mis-sion trip being planned for summer 2018.

Set Blessing of Fire Trucks for East Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company for Sunday, October 1 during morning worship, and a Blessing of the Animals for Sunday, October 15 at 3:00PM un-der the pavilion.

Approved having a lawyer send a letter to Colin Walsh about the progress of the organ project.

Thank you letters were received from: Family Promise for the donation of $81.30 Care Net of Caron county for the donation of $71.58 Carbon County Firemen’s Association for hosting the May 2017 meeting at the church. Diakon for the donation of $500 in memory of Rev. Henry K. Wohlgemuth.
