We’re so glad you’ve registered to host a Dinner Down Memory Lane. Now it’s time to make your night a really special one with the people you care about.

A meal to remember, a cause that matters

We all love sharing great food and fond memories with our friends and family.

But hosting a Dinner Down Memory Lane adds something different to the mix. By asking your guests to make a donation to Marie Curie, you’re helping to give more people living with a terminal illness the chance to spend quality time with their loved ones – just as you’ll be doing when you get together for a Dinner Down Memory Lane.

So get ready to design your dinner with a difference. While you prepare to dish up something delicious, you’ll be supporting our nurses as they care for people through the night in their own homes.

Thanks for signing up!

Choose a date and send your invitations

Once you’ve chosen a date, in or around October, let your friends and family know.

Visit mariecurie.org.uk/ invitations to send invitations online. Instead of asking your guests to bring a drink or dessert, why not encourage them to bring a donation for Marie Curie?

Have a great time

If you’re in need of a little inspiration to plan your memorable menu, take a look at the scrumptious recipe ideas on our website at mariecurie.org.uk/dinner.

Once you’ve served up a delicious meal, share good times with your friends and family and let them know why you’re supporting Marie Curie.

Send in the money you raise

At the end of the evening, it’s the perfect time to ask your guests to make a donation. You can then send in the money you’ve raised from a fun and memorable night. See the last pages of this booklet to find out how.

How it works Here’s our three-step guide to hosting a Dinner Down Memory Lane.

Thanks to the care of Marie Curie Nurses, Fiona Brown’s mum Chrissie was able to spend her last days at home with family and friends. “Mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2002. Then, in late January of the following year, we got the news that the cancer had spread to her liver.

“We were really grateful that we were able to have Mum come home to be with us. We had the care of Marie Curie Nurses for about a week before she died in March 2003.”

Comfort and support“The Marie Curie Nurses were able to come over in the evenings. Having that comfort from a nurse, who was able to sit with Mum while we got some rest, made a huge difference.

Marie Curie is here for people living with any terminal illness, and their families. We offer expert care, guidance and support to help them get the most from the time they have left.

Our nurses work night and day, in people’s homes across the UK, providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. Our hospices offer specialist round-the-clock care.

And we support people throughout their illness with practical information and support from trained volunteers, and by being there when someone wants to talk.

£20 enables a Marie Curie

Nurse to look after someone with a terminal illness for one hour, in the comfort of their own home.

£70 helps someone with

a terminal illness enjoy gentle exercise, an art class and other activities at a Marie Curie Hospice.

£180 means that a Marie

Curie Nurse can look after someone with a terminal illness for a nine-hour shift, in the comfort of their own home.

£400 makes it possible

for someone to stay in a Marie Curie Hospice for a whole day and get the hands-on care they need in their final days.

“It also meant people could come and go as they wanted.

“My brother had moved home by this point. I was off work on leave. My dad was there as well and we had amazing support from family and friends.”

A night to remember“I distinctly remember the nurse who was there the evening my mum passed away. I had been sleeping, and the nurse came and told us that my mum’s breathing had changed. So I was able to get my brother and my dad, and go and sit with her.

“A few family members were able to come and see her at peace before a private ambulance took Mum away. This brought comfort to our family.

“And it made a difference to see my mum so peaceful in her own bed. After she passed away she was just so beautiful – she looked young, relaxed and at peace. Our hearts were so heavy, but it was like a big weight had been lifted from her.”

“One man asked me to make

him pancakes in the middle

of the night. His wife had said

he wasn’t eating very much,

so when he asked for pancakes,

I said I was happy to make

them, but had no idea how to!

He laughed and told me the

packet was in the cupboard,

so that’s what I used.”
