GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION

For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21).

Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3). For those not receiving Holy Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. For non-Christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

Para los católicos Los católicos participamos plenamente en la celebración de la Eucaristía cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión. Se nos anima a recibirla frecuentemente y con devoción. Para estar debidamente preparados a recibir la Eucaristía, los fieles no deben haber cometido pecado grave y deben haber ayunado por una hora antes de comulgar. Quien haya cometido pecado grave desde su última confesión no debe recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor sin antes haberse confesado con un sacerdote, excepto en situaciones extremas cuando no hay oportunidad de confesarse. En tal caso, los fieles deben estar conscientes de la obligación de hacer un acto de Contrición perfecta con la intención de confesarse lo más pronto posible (Derecho Canónico, canon 916). Se anima a los fieles a recibir el Sacramento de la Penitencia con frecuencia. Para los cristianos no católicos Damos la bienvenida a todos los cristianos, como a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a esta celebración de la Eucaristía. The ones who will be ordained as priests are called forward and presented to Bishop Walkowiak. Father Stephen Durkee, director of priestly vocations, testifies to their readiness. The Bishop announces their election: Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Priesthood.

All give their assent by responding "Thanks be to God," followed by applause.

Promises of the Elect

The candidates make five promises: to assist bishops in caring for the Lord's flock; to preach and teach "worthily and wisely;" to celebrate faithfully the sacraments; to "pray without ceasing" for God's mercy upon the people entrusted to their care; and to resolve to "be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest." Finally, each kneels before the Bishop and promises to respect and obey him and his successors.

Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination The candidates kneel before the Bishop, who places his hands upon each in silence. Next, all vested priests who are present lay their hands upon the candidates in silence. The faithful pray silently while this is taking place.

(At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen) Investiture with Stole and Chasuble The stole of a priest is worn around the neck. Like a deacon’s stole, it is a sign of Holy Orders and service. The chasuble is an outer garment that is worn by bishops and priests only when the Eucharist is being celebrated. You will notice that the candidates for Holy Orders entered the liturgy wearing an alb – the garment of baptism.

The Bishop stands and extends a greeting of peace to the newly ordained. This seals, so to speak, the admittance into their ministry as the Bishop’s new co-workers. The concelebrating priests also share an expression of peace with the newly ordained as a sign of their being joined in the Order of Priests.

Anointing of Hands with Sacred Chrism The palms of the newly ordained are anointed to symbolize the priest's distinc-tive participation in Christ's Priesthood as one who offers sacrifice to God and sanctifies the Christian people. The Sacred Chrism used for this anointing is a blend of olive oil and fragrant spices consecrated by the Bishop during Holy Week. Handing Over of Bread and Wine The placing of bread and wine into the hands of the new priests points to their duty of presiding at the celebration of the Eucharist and of following Christ cru-cified.

Reverend Dominic T. Couturier, 41, is the son of Thomas and Roberta Couturier. He has five siblings: Jonathan, Nathan, Jacob, Monique and Mark. He is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Grand Rapids and grew up in Greenville where he attended St. Charles Borromeo Parish. He attended Davenport University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2004. He worked at Couturier Iron Craft Inc. until entering the seminary in 2014.

Deacon Dominic received his Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois, in spring 2020. He completed his pastoral internship at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Norton Shores and St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Muskegon, under the mentorship of Father Charles Hall. He was ordained a transitional deacon on May 18, 2019.

Father Dominic will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1935 Plymouth Ave. SE, Grand Rapids.

Reverend Michael J. Goodwin, 37, is the son of Howard and Margaret Goodwin of Allendale, Michigan. He has four siblings: Phillip, Donald, Stephen and Elizabeth. He attended Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 2005. Raised in a loving Evangelical Christian home, Michael entered the Catholic Church at the 2011 Easter Vigil Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids. He is a member of St. Luke University Parish.

Deacon Michael received his Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois, in spring 2019. He completed his pastoral internship at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Grand Rapids under the mentorship of Father Peter Damian. He was ordained a transitional deacon on May 12, 2018.

Father Michael will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2750 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids.

Reverend Daniel R. Orris Jr., 29, is the son of Daniel and Bernadine Orris. He has three siblings: Patti (Keith) Patterson, Nancy Orris and Jill (Mark) Dodds. He is a member of St. Dominic Parish in Wyoming, now merged with the Shrine of St. Francis Xavier and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Grand Rapids. He attended Aquinas College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 2014.

Deacon Daniel received his Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois, in spring 2020. He completed his pastoral internship at Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Rockford, under the mentorship of Father Anthony Russo. He was ordained a transitional deacon on May 18, 2019.

Father Daniel will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 50 Bellevue St. SE, Wyoming .
