9 DAYS FOR LIFE - PRAYER, PENANCE AND PILGRIMAGE The USCCB supplied for those of us back at home, not going to DC for the March for Life, to participate in a meaningful, prayerful way. Their initiative is called "9 DAYS FOR LIFE - Prayer, Penance and Pilgrimage". The core of this program is a 9 Day Novena marking the 41ST Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. For more information check out the website 9daysforlife.com or call Christy at 803-554-6088.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Christmas season comes to an official end today with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. It is a superb day to reflect upon our own Baptism and our baptismal call. “Christ is baptized, not that He may be sanctified in the waters, but that He Himself may sanctify the waters. …Christ therefore takes the lead in Baptism, so that Christian peoples may follow after Him with confidence.” (St. Maximus of Turin, 423 AD)

Jesus Himself speaks of the importance of Baptism. Here is the Great Commissioning, Jesus’ last words of Matthew’s Gospel: “Go, therefore, and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I

am with you always, until the end of the age.” (St. Matthew 28:19-20) Perhaps take some time this week, even today, to read the section of the Catechism on Baptism, which begins with paragraph 1213.

Above all, Baptism is, of course, not “magic.” It is a beautiful channel of grace, but only the beginning. God does not infuse full knowledge as if we were senseless beings. We are beings endowed with the gift of reason, part of having been created in God’s own image and likeness. He still wishes us to use our minds, and we must use them as adults if we hope to grow in faith and understanding. With this in mind and with renewed attacks from the “new atheists” sector, here are some recommended books for the beginning of this year. They can be found and purchased online.

Answering Atheism: How to Make the Case for God with Logic and Charity, by Trent Horn. “Trent Horn’s book strikes the right balance of breadth and depth, clarity and sophistication, charity and truth. His main project is to show there are no good reasons to embrace atheism while there are many reasons to accept theism. He defends these contentions with fair and accessible prose, copious endnotes, thick appendices, and helpful Socratic dialogues, which all make this [a] go-to recommendation for anyone wondering whether God is real.”

The Priority of Christ: Toward a Postliberal Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron. “Barron offers one answer to our need to join the gap between Christian culture and secularism: Jesus Christ. … Fr. Barron’s understanding of scripture is beyond compare.”

Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word, by Erasmo Leiva Merikakis. 3 Volumes. This beautiful, monumental work on the Gospel of Matthew is filled with both detailed commentary and nourishing spiritual insight written over a decade of reflection. A great read for this Year of Matthew in our Lectionary cycle. Don’t be daunted by the three volumes – try the first and go from there.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Only individuals blessed by the projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin American can adequately explain the true value of each dollar that has been provided by your generous support of this. Neotefilo (in Brazil), is a project funded by this collection. Young people there face poverty, drugs and little hope for the future. This special collection, through projects like Neotefilo, empowers young people to deepen their call and become leaders in their communities. Our diocese will be taking up this collection the weekend of Jan. 25-26. Please be generous in the Collection for the Church in Latin America and encourage the youth to live faith. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. In the Lord’s Peace, Most Reverened Robert E. Gugliemone

Please note: There is a 6:30 AM Mass every Monday for the Men’s group that meets in Smith Hall. This Mass is open to all of St. Mary’s parishioners, not just the men. So, ladies and gentlemen, you are welcome to join in the celebration of this Mass.

Join noted Professor of Theology and author, Fr. Robert Barron, in this revealing presentation as he sheds light on the Seven Deadly Sins - those great spiritual blocks that inhibit our relationship with God and others - and the antidote to them, the Seven Lively Virtues! Fr. Barron uses Dante's DIVINE COMEDY to expose these sinful patterns in our lives and show how they are effectively counteracted by the cultivation of virtue through the development of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This fascinating journey shows the path that God has designed to lead us to health, happiness and holiness. Come, eat and See! You. Yes, you! What are you

looking to do with your Spiritual life? Listen! Can you hear that? ….. a still, small Voice from deep within calling, stirring….but to what? Perhaps it’s a deeper walk with Him

- in your prayer life, in serving those around you; maybe it’s just to put your Faith where your mouth is and become a living example walking in His Footsteps. Well, this is your lucky day! Your Brothers and Sisters of the Secular Franciscan Order are inviting you to “come and see” who we are and what we are about! And you get to do this with a great home cooked Italian meal of pasta marinara, meatballs, garlic bread, salad and dessert! What’s the cost? Simply a little bit of your time and some joyful fellowship. We will get together in Smith Hall on Thursday, January 23 at 6:15 PM. There will be a very brief presentation followed by Q&A.

Please RSVP to Sharon Stanley at 803-648-6998 by Wed., Jan. 22 if you plan to attend so our cook will be sure to have plenty to eat!

Scholarship interviews may be an integral part of the evaluation.

APPRECIATE SOMEONE WHO COULD HELP YOU?
