Learning Resources

Access to a multi-disciplinary research database providing acclaimed full-text journals, magazines, and other valuable resources.

Face-To-Face: Live & Online Webinars

For each unit, online webinars will be held throughout the programme, recorded for those that are unable to attend. These will be a live chance to explore and critique the research and concepts being learnt through the programme.

Beginning with a two-day workshop at our training venue in Manchester, UK you will start to develop both knowledge and skills from the start.

Towards the conclusion of the programme, students will meet in Manchester for a final workshop.

Assessments

The programme units are each assessed using a combination of essays, reflective writing, video/audio analyses, and research critiques.

The units and their related assessments are added approximately every month as you progress through your studies to ensure that you have time to commit to each of them. This gives you the opportunity to explore the knowledge, develop skill, and also to consider application as you move through the programme.

Progression Paths

The Diploma in Behaviour Analysis and Investigative Interviewing (Diploma in BAII) counts as 90 credits towards a 180 credit Master Degree (MSc).

For those wishing to continue their studies after the Diploma and complete a unique MSc, the Diploma in BAII provides direct access onto the Masters Degree ‘Communication, Behaviour, and Credibility Analysis’ with Manchester Metropolitan University.

Here you will able to undertake your own research project within the field of Deception, Emotion, Communication, and Behaviour and earn a Master of Science.

More information on the MSc can be found on the Manchester Metropolitan University Website.

Please note: The MMU website outlines two years of typical study. Due to the extensive Diploma program, all Diploma delegates will be entering the MSc as Year two students, saving 1 full year of undergraduate study.

The Syllabus

Behaviour Analysis - Workshop (2 Days) and online.

The first module of the Diploma consists of an online knowledge course and a two-day practical workshop. Here you will develop your skills and ability to read and understand others through analysing verbal and non-verbal behaviours. You learn the SCAnR™ system and how to apply it’s behavioural criteria to assess truth and lies.

Face and Emotion - Online.

FACS is the world’s most comprehensive and adopted tool for measuring and labelling facial movement and categorizing emotional displays on the face. In the Face and Emotion Module, you will practice and learn the techniques of the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and explore the research on universal facial expressions and emotions. The Module is designed to not only prepare you for the FACS final certification but also to provide further insight into how FACS can be used for research, and for enhancing your accuracy in real-time analysis of the facial expressions of other people.

Investigative Interviewing - Online.

This Module takes ‘interviewing’ to mean “a conversation with a purpose” and, therefore, the information that it contains can be applied to any context in which we are interacting with others. Also, the investigative element of the module explores a variety of approaches that can aid in achieving a greater depth of understanding when interacting and interviewing others. You will be introduced to different interview protocols and frameworks, including powerful, yet non-oppressive EIA elicitation and interview models.. The aim is to give you a range of techniques and frameworks that you can apply, as deemed relevant, within your own work and non-work contexts.

Psychophysiology - Online.

You will look at the relationship between psychology and physiology. Learn how social, cognitive and emotional behaviour is mirrored in physiological processes, and how this can support the assessment and understanding of the behaviour you can see and hear. You will take a look at the latest technology being utilized in the field of emotion and deception and consider their benefits and weaknesses.

The Syllabus continued

Emotional Intelligence - Online.

Emotional intelligence is about the ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others. It is also about the ability to use and manage emotions constructively to deal with our own wellbeing and the purpose of our interactions with others. This Module helps you to explore, critique and draw from the latest developments in emotional competency as a basis to develop your skills and abilities in this area.

Attentiveness and Mindfulness - Online.

This Module will focus on attentiveness and how applying it can help you create the conditions to analyse behaviour accurately so you can objectively manage an interview or conversation. You will learn and practice the benefits of mindfulness, and how remaining present, and becoming aware of your biases and emotions state will increase the success of your interactions and support your emotional intelligence.

Forensic Linguistics - Online.

This Module explores the various applied theories and approaches used to analyse language, language use, and the acoustic qualities of the voice in relation to emotion, influence, credibility, and deception. Throughout this Module you will start to analyse conversations and interactions in order to identify clues to emotional states, any influencing strategies at work and also potential indicators of deception; this will be looked at using various analysis types and also through the use of technology/software. The Module also looks closely at the interactional strategies people use to avoid having to deceive or be seen as deceptive.

Masterclass - Workshop (2 Days).

The final Module in the Diploma is the two-day live Masterclass. Here you will bring together all the knowledge and skills you have acquired over the course of the Diploma and put them into practice. The intensive workshop is designed to put you in high-stakes real-life scenarios and provide you a safe and positive environment to hone your skills and learn from the rest of the group and your expert tutors.
