Introducing the most exciting thing to have happened in community governance since, well, ever!

We are delighted to introduce you to a brand new not-for-profit sector initiative that is set to transform community sector governance in Australia.

The Diploma of Business (Governance) is Australia’s only currently approved diploma-level governance qualification. This qualification is recognised nationally and will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to sit on or work with boards at the highest level.

For too long, not-for-profit Board members and their supporters have put up with a second-rate reputation and second-rate education. That’s set to change.

With greater recognition for your qualifications, graduates of the new Diploma will enjoy enhanced employment opportunities, access to higher-level governance roles and pathways to further study nationally and overseas.

Our Diploma of Business (Governance) has been developed by the Institute of Community Directors Australia, an Our Community enterprise, in partnership with Chisholm Institute, a leading educator based in Victoria but delivering courses nation-wide.

Our partnership with Chisholm ensures the academic rigour required for a qualification of this level and provides wonderful opportunities for participants to explore further training and professional development opportunities.

In a nod to the importance of technology to today’s board members, Diploma students will also have access to the Institute of Community Directors Australia’s extensive suite of online governance resources, both through a pre-loaded iPad mini and the Institute of Community Directors website.

We welcome your interest in taking up this opportunity and urge you to get in touch.

5Diploma of Business (Governance)

The Institute of Community Directors Australia has developed the new diploma-level course of not-for-profit directors: the Diploma of Business (Governance) – BSB 50710.

This course, delivered in partnership with Chisholm Institute, is designed specifically for not-for-profit board/committee members, and the staff (CEOs and senior staff) who work alongside them.

Both prospective and current members of boards are eligible for enrolment.

Not-for-profit boards present particular issues that are often not reflected in commercial boards. Funding is tight, recruitment can be difficult, measurements of success are often difficult to define. This course provides a framework for good governance that straddles both legal imperatives and not-for-profit realities.

Course participant requirements:• Time to read, prepare and reflect on fundamental governance principles

• Ability to attend and actively participate in a total of five days of training (three consecutive days + two consecutive days one month later)

• Commitment to complete competency based assessment within six months of face-to-face training (expected requirement is five to 10 hours per competency – 12 units)

• Commitment to transferring knowledge gained to organisation once completed

Course participants will receive:• iPad mini preloaded with materials, plus access to governance support through the Institute of Community

Directors Australia website

• A quality learning environment that provides practical outcomes

• Relevant and challenging case studies drawn from the not-for-profit environment

• Exposure to a diverse range of views and approaches to governance, recognising that one size does not fit all

• A program that provides value for all participants regardless of whether they are completely new to a board or have had longer term involvement and experience

• Post-training contact to assist progression with assessment

• Support beyond the Diploma program through support materials, resources and networking opportunities

Post nominals:• Participants who successfully complete the requirements of the Diploma of Business (Governance)

– BSB 50710 – will be eligible to use the post-nominals:o Dip. Bus. (Gov)o FICDA (Fellow of the Institute of Community Directors Australia)

At the conclusion of the fifth day of the course, students are required to complete a competency based assessment for each unit. The aim of competency based assessment is to ensure that you have not only absorbed the content but are able to implement actions – where possible, we will ask you to think about how assessment tasks could be implemented in your own organisation.

We expect that all 12 unit assessments will be completed within six months of completing the course, with at least one completed during the gap between the first and second blocks.

You will be contacted monthly by our assessors and you are free to make contact with assessors directly if you have any issues or questions. We will support you to complete the Diploma but equally we expect you to make an effort.

Assessments can be completed online or downloaded and submitted via email.
