Our History & Milestones The inception of the Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) at SIM in 1973 was a significant milestone in the history of executive and management development in Singapore.

Prior to 1973, no such formal certified programmes were available. Back then, SIM’s main focus was to provide complementary training to develop the prerequisite managerial skills and talent needed for our nation’s expanding economy.

Thus, the DMS was introduced at an opportune time as a broad-based management studies programme open to executives and managers who had taken important responsibilities in a wide variety of companies. Its forward-looking pedagogical aim was to provide executive

education and develop leadership to advance management and business in the cosmopolitan context of enterprise in Singapore. It also provided these executives with a platform to form social networks, exchange ideas, and recommend viable propositions for workplace improvement. Out of the 500 applicants, 70 were selected as the first DMS cohort.

From Home Ground to Regional Influence What initially started as a part-time, post-experience evening programme soon turned into a full-time DMS programme in 2002 in response to the new demand by school-leavers and budding executives for foundational tertiary level studies in management education.

Premised upon maturity and insight in developmental learning with a focus on continual

education, the DMS thus evolved into a back-to-basics, Singapore-brand, full-time management programme of reputable quality for both local and international students.

Today, the full-time DMS has enrolled over 50 intakes and produced 19,000 graduates at SIM. Among its student enrolment are students from Singapore, Indonesia, China, Myanmar, Vietnam and India.

A Revised Curriula, An Innovative Spirit Infusing a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship into the revised DMS curricula ensures its modules cater to the inherent needs of an increasingly knowledge-based and global society.

The quality of the DMS is constantly assessed with rigour by qualified academics, with

the development of appropriate module specifications and course materials, and the upholding of strict assessment and exam standards. Our experienced lecturers also deliver quality teaching whilst the course administrators monitor learning and provide a conducive culture for learning. Today, the DMS enjoys articulation into the degree programmes of reputable universities such as the University of London, RMIT University, University at Buffalo, University of Birmingham, University of Wollongong, University of Stirling and La Trobe University.

Meeting the Needs of the IndustryAt SIM, we constantly calibrate our programmes to meet real needs and to fulfill our social mission. In responding to the

market gaps of a rapidly changing economic and manpower development landscape, we continue to be rigorous, practical and student-centric.

To this end, SIM offers its own programmes like the Diploma in Accounting (DAC) in 2012, followed by the Diploma in International Business (DIB), and Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBF) programmes in 2014.

A Financial Training Centre (FTC) is established in order to provide SIM DBF students with a virtual trading environment to better experience the real-world simulation of trading activities in areas such as foreign exchange, securities and derivative instruments.

On the other hand, SIM DIB students are introduced to forums related to international issues

to widen their exposure, and cultivate a global outlook through different perspectives.

SIM has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) to allow students from the SIM DAC to be granted credit exemptions for the CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting. DAC graduates are also granted exemptions from other Accounting Professional bodies such as the ICAEW and ACCA.

Private Education ActUnder the Private Education Act, legislated in December 2009, a Council for Private Education was set up to regulate the private education industry in Singapore. From 03 October 2016, the Council for Private Education became part of a new statutory board - SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). Under the new structure, the SSG Board appointed the Committee for Private Education (CPE) to carry out its functions and powers relating to private education under the Private Education Act.

All Private Education Institutions (PEIs) are required to comply with the regulations under the Act in order to continue operations.

Following are the requirements which Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd (SIM PL) has put in place:

PEI-Student ContractCPE, in aiming to enhance the confidence of students and their parents in the quality of education in Singapore, has stipulated that all PEIs must sign a PEI-Student Contract with students. The contract sets out the terms and conditions governing the relationship between the student and PEI. SIM PL will honour all terms and conditions in the contract and in all communication materials.

Students may request for a copy of the PEI-Student Contract from SIM PL or view it on the CPE website (www.cpe.gov.sg).

Cooling-Off Period There will be a cooling-off period of 7 working days after signing the PEI-Student Contract. Students have the right to cancel the contract within the 7 working days and be refunded the highest percentage of the fees already paid if the students submit written notice of withdrawal to SIM PL within the cooling off period (refer to Clause 2.3 of PEI-Student Contract). After the cooling-off period, SIM PL’s refund policy will apply.

Fee Protection Scheme SIM PL adopts a mandatory Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) to protect the paid fees of both local and international students. The FPS serves to protect the student’s fees in the event that the PEI is unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. In addition, the FPS protects the student if the PEI fails to pay penalties or return fees to the student arising from judgments made against it by the Singapore courts.

SIM PL has appointed Etiqa Insurance Pte. Ltd. and Lonpac Insurance Bhd as our FPS insurance providers. Under the FPS insurance scheme, students’ fees will be insured by the FPS insurance provider pre-assigned by SIM PL. In case of events as stated above, students will be able to claim their paid fees from the respective FPS insurance provider.

More details of the FPS can also be found in the FPS Instruction Manual, available at www.cpe.gov.sg.

Medical InsuranceSIM PL has in place a group medical insurance scheme for all its students. This medical insurance scheme will have a minimum coverage as follows: an annual coverage limit of S$20,000 per student, covers up to B2 ward in government and restructured hospitals and provides for 24 hours coverage in Singapore and overseas (if student is involved in SIM PL-related activities) throughout the course duration.

For more information on medical insurance, visit:www.simge.edu.sg/ge/medicalinsurance.

Refund, Course Transfer, Leave of Absence and Withdrawal Policies For refund, course transfer, leave of absence and withdrawal policies, please refer towww.simge.edu.sg/ge/refund.

Confidentiality SIM PL is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of the student's personal information and undertakes not to divulge any of the student's personal information to any third party without the prior written consent of the student SUBJECT TO the obligation of SIM PL to disclose to any Singapore government authority any information relating to the student in compliance with the law and/or to the organisation conferring/awarding the qualification.
