FAST STARTSHBU has outscored its opponents 43-27 in the first quarter. The Huskies have scored a touchdown on their opening drive three times and has led or been tied after the first period in four of the six games.

BROWN’S BREAKOUTFreshman running back James Brown recorded the sixth 100-plus-yard rushing performance, carrying 14 times for 118 yards and a touchdown in a 24-17 victory over Texas Southern. He opened the Huskies’ final drive with a 34-yard gain, then capped it with a 33-yard touchdown run that essentially put the game away. Brown earned STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week honorable mention for his performance.

EARLY ACCOLADESSenior linebacker Garrett Dolan, who ranked second in the nation in tackles last year to earn AP and STATS FC All-America honors, has been named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team, the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for the nation’s top defensive player, the College Football Yearbook FCS Starting Lineup and was a Southland Preseason All-Conference First-Team selection. Dolan has made 429 career tackles and is a three-time All-Southland pick.

LEGS TO STAND ON Junior kicker Alec Chadwick made a 60-yard field goal in last year’s season finale at Incarnate Word, the longest field goal in Division I football in 2016. Chadwick made 16-of-25 field goals during the campaign, earning second-team all-conference honors and preseason all-conference honors. He is 5-for-8 so far, including a 54-yarder against Abilene Christian and just missing left on a 56-yard attempt at McNeese. Senior punter Christian Guzman, a freshman All-America pick in 2014, entered the season with the third-best average in Southland Conference history. He is also third in the FCS among active players with a 42.8-yard average, is a two-time all-conference honoree and preseason all-conference pick this year.

ORIGINAL 13HBU has 13 fifth-year seniors who have been with the program since it’s beginning: Terrell Brown III, Tyler Brown, Garrett Dolan, Ethan Fry, Danny Garza, Christian Guzman, Tyler Helaire, Austin Holley, B.J. Kelly, Kameron Lecoq, Cody Moncure, Eduardo Osegueda and Taylor Thompson.

BIG SHOES TO FILLLast season, quarterback Tony Dawson passed for 1,702 yards and seven touchdowns, while also rushing for 784 yards and six touchdowns to earn all-conference recognition at quarterback and as an all-purpose player. True freshman quarterback Bailey Zappe has assumed the starting role and threw for 248 yards -- the second most in a single game in HBU history -- a touchdown and an interception in the Huskies’ 24-17 victory over Texas Southern. He also set school records for completions and attempts when he went 30-for-45 against No. 6 Central Arkansas on Oct. 7.

DOLAN’S CHASE FOR 500Senior linebacker Garrett Dolan ranks among the top five of the FCS’s all-time leaders in total tackles with 483, the only question is where he will finish. He leads the Southland and is third nationally with 12.6 tackles per game.
