Vendors, left without “many more
throws of the dice”, are hoping
that the dramatic surge in betting
turnover on racing and renewed
interest in the sport in recent months can help
fuel end-user demand for racing stock at the
Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
The two-day sale, bringing an end to the
jam-packed national broodmare, weanling and
now yearling and racehorse auction on the Gold
Coast, could provide further illumination about
the overall appetite for ownership investment,
particularly by those playing below the top-end
of the market.

The buying bench at the National
Yearling Sale has taken a hit with Victorians unable to attend due to the
out-of-control nature of the coronavirus in their home state and some
Sydneysiders have also been locked out of Queensland.
Despite that, stakeholders were somewhat surprised by those
potential buyers who were on the Gold Coast yesterday, with a number of
agents either staying on or arriving for the sale while interstate and local
trainers have also made an effort to attend.
Wattle Bloodstock’s Peter Twomey, Neil Jenkinson and Olly Koolman
as well as Sheamus Mills, Bevan Smith and Paul Willetts were among
those agents finalising their short lists under blue skies yesterday.
Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida and a host of syndicators including
Dynamic, Prime Thoroughbreds, Flying Start and Darby Racing were also
on the ground conducting inspections.
Koolman is attending the National yearling sale for the first time and
compiled lists of potential candidates for various clients and entities who
could not be on the Gold Coast themselves.
The agent was upbeat about the outlook for the industry which had
survived and prospered since equine influenza and the GFC.
“I just think the way prize-money is, there’s still an opportunity. You
don’t need to spend $300,000-$400,000 on a horse to get a winner. You are
racing on Saturday for pretty good money,” Koolman told ANZ Bloodstock
News.
“If we can keep racing going, we’re the winner. Racing’s survived
everything. We didn’t fall over in the war, EI didn’t knock us down and I
don’t think the pandemic will either. We’re too resilient; we’re too much
fun, we’re a sport that everyone can get involved in and I’ll back it all the
way.”
Magic Millions bloodstock manager Clint Donovan took heart from
what was achieved at last week’s broodmare and weanling sales but
believes that if there was a segment of the market to take a hit, it could be
the yearlings.
“There’s no doubt that it will be challenging from a sales company and
vendor point of view, but I think there will be some really nice horses who
will be well found by the buying bench but that might be one in every 15
or so,” Donovan said.
“There’s going to be some big opportunities on horses that in previous
years might have been $40,000 and $50,000 that will be making $15,000
and $20,000.
“This sale is different (to last week’s) as we are dealing with the
complete end-user scenario with these yearlings, barring a few people
looking to trade into the two-year-old sale.
“There is confidence with the racing keeping on going, touch wood,
and the fact that betting turnover is up through this period then we’re
certainly cautiously optimistic that we can have some sort of success over
the next two days.”
Given that vendors have been prepared to bring their yearlings - or
new season two-year-olds as they are now - to the Gold Coast, Donovan
says buyers can be confident that sellers will be prepared to put their
horses on the market in order to move them on.
He said: “They are here to sell and there

are a number of commercial farms here
with nice horses who have said to me that they are going to be unreserved.
The market will be truly tested.”
Raheen Stud’s Basil Nolan, who is also president of Thoroughbred
Breeders Australia and has four lots to go through the ring, reaffirmed
Donovan’s view.
“I think people realise that we have continued to race and to continue
to race we need horses for that, so I think a lot of trainers have surprised
me really that they are here,” Nolan said yesterday.
“Leading trainers from Sydney have made the effort to get here and
hopefully they go home with a nice horse.
“As for vendors, we haven’t got many more throws of the dice, so we
have got to lower our sights and move on.”
The progeny of stallions such as American Pharoah (Pioneerof The
Nile), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Deep
Field (Northern Meteor), Dundeel (High Chaparral), Pierro (Lonhro) and
the recently crowned leading first season sire Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry)
are all represented in the National sale.
Four-time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) also has
four lots catalogued, while stock by So You Think (High Chaparral),
Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor) are also on
offer.
“We have sold some amazing horses out of what is traditionally the
June sale and it’s now August, which is hard to believe, but vendors have
taken the opportunity on board and got horses professionally broken in,”
Donovan said.
“They have taken videos of the process and used it as a marketing tool.
People can buy a nice horse here that’s broken in and untried. It could be
anything.”

Optimism that Vic racing can continueVictorian racing authorities are confident that
strict biosecurity protocols will allow racing to
continue in the state, despite Melbourne shifting
to tougher Covid-19 restrictions as of last night.
Victorian premier Daniel Andrews yesterday
announced that metropolitan Melbourne would
be subject to a curfew between 8pm and 5am, with
strict travel restrictions also in place. Yesterday’s
announcement dealt with day-to-day living,
with a further statement expected today as to the
effect on workplaces, with racing’s continuation
expected to be addressed by the government.
Racing Victoria said: "Until otherwise advised,
racing and training is continuing under the strict
biosecurity protocols that have safely guided the
Victorian racing industry throughout the past
four-and-a-half months without a Covid-19 case.”
Baker happy with Kiss The BrideBjorn Baker began the season strongly at
Randwick on Saturday with a double thanks to
Kiss The Bride (Savabeel) and Off Shaw (Tobique).
The well-bred Kiss The Bride, the first foal out of
Group 1 winner I Do (No Excuse Needed), relished
the 1800-metre slog on a heavy track to score by a
neck in what was a gutsy performance. “He didn’t
show a whole heap early on but he has continued
to improve,” Baker said. “I do think he is better on
top of the ground and I think it was mainly guts,
a good ride from James McDonald and a never-
give-in attitude that got him home. There’s not
a whole heap of races for him at present so I’m
going to have to give it some thought on where we
go to with him. I’d like to think we will be looking
at some of the staying stakes races but that might
still be a preparation away. It was great to kick off
the season on a positive note, to get two on the
first day of the new year is a real boost.”
Four in a row for Tigre RoyaleThe promising Tigre Royale (Redwood) made it
four in a row as he continued his rise through the
grades with a length and three-quarter win over
2400 metres at Sandown yesterday. Purchased for
NZ$8,000 at the 2017 South Island Yearling Sale,
Tigre Royale has now won $191,825 in prize-money.
“It’s incredible, and full credit to all of my staff, and
Cheryl Weller who we use down at the beach, and
everyone that has something to do with this horse,”
trainer Archie Alexander said. “I think he’s been in
work for ten months and to win four-in-a-row, you
can’t see a rib on him, he’s in great form. He’s not at
all tired and we’ve kept him ticking along. The horse
is going from strength-to-strength. Twelve months
ago, we didn’t have a huge opinion of him and
he’s kept on improving. We thought he was a nice
enough stayer and he’s proving us wrong now and
he could be better than we thought.”
Wrong horse brought to SandownTrainer John McArdle was left red-faced
after presenting the wrong horse to race at
Sandown yesterday. McArdle was set to saddle
up Drone Strike (Smart Missile) for her first
run since February, but the three-year-old
filly was withdrawn when it was discovered
the stable had instead brought four-year-old
mare Wandjinapine (Wandjina) to the course.
McArdle was fined $1,000 by stewards and said
it was just a simple mistake. "The horses were
in the paddock together and the girl who got
her out of the yard simply got the wrong horse,"
McArdle said. “It was just a case of human error.”
Vic apprentices cleared of wrongdoingTeo Nugent and Lachlan King were cleared
yesterday after stewards brought a three-week
inquiry into a Caulfield race last month to a
close. Nugent aboard the John Hickmott-trained
France’s Boy (Equiano) and King on Surreal
Image (Akeed Mofeed) for Kevin Corstens
went toe-to-toe on the speed in the middle
of a 1700-metre handicap on July 11, with the
pair going 10 lengths clear of their rivals. Both
weakened out to miss the placings. While
stewards, having taken evidence into account,
believed that both riders misjudged the pace,
they did not believe they could make a running
and handling case. Consequently, both riders
were handed a severe reprimand.
Murphy appointed SA jockey coachFormer rider Darryn Murphy has begun a new
role as a coach and mentor for emerging jockeys
coming through Thoroughbred Racing South
Australia’s (TRSA) South Australian Apprentice
Academy. Murphy, who has held a similar role
in Turkey, is excited for the opportunity to
work with promising riders like Sophie Logan,
Lachie Neindorf, Teagan Voorham and Maggie
Collett, among others. “This is a dream job for
me and something I am very passionate about,"
Murphy told Racing.com. "I am looking forward
to assisting our young riding brigade in their
career development and not just with their skill
sets. Confidence and belief is such a big part of
race riding and I will be trying to bring that to
the group as well. I will be working at as many
race meetings as possible around the state and
supplying feedback on not only techniques and
styles but also providing support on things such
as preparation and post-race analysis.”

Bred To Win returnsTomorrow night will see the return of Bred
To Win, Caroline Searcy’s breeding-focused
programme on Sky Thoroughbred Central.
Searcy will visit some of this season’s new
stallions, including Castelvecchio (Dundeel)
at Arrowfield Stud and Vinery’s Exceedance
(Exceed And Excel), while she also discusses
the fourth Arrowfield Stud champion sire title
for Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) with Arrowfield
principal John Messara. Bred To Win will be
screened at 8:30pm tomorrow night on Sky
Thoroughbred Central and will also be live-
streamed on the Racing NSW homepage.
NEW ZEALAND
Vale Rip Van WinkleWindsor Park Stud announced the death of Rip
Van Winkle (Galileo) yesterday at the age of 14
after a short illness. Rip Van Winkle, a three-
time Group 1 winner who was twice named
world champion miler when trained by Aidan
O’Brien, had shuttled from Ireland to New
Zealand from 2011 until 2016; he remained
at Windsor Park permanently after the 2016
season. While Rip Van Winkle was a consistent
sire of winners, he was entering the upcoming
breeding season off his best year to date, having
produced his first two New Zealand Group
1 winners: trans-Tasman superstar Te Akau
Shark and dominant filly Jennifer Eccles. “It’s
a devastating blow for us and the industry
losing a successful sire, especially one who has
just enjoyed a great season on the racetrack,”
Windsor Park Stud’s Rodney Schick said. “We
can only look forward to the remaining crops
he has to come and to the impact his daughters
are sure to make at stud.”
Bosson not far from returnBig-race rider Opie Bosson is preparing for
another season as Te Akau Racing’s stable
jockey with his return to the races slated for
the August 12 meeting at Taupo. Bosson, who
turned 40 on July 24, rode 18 horses at the Te
Rapa trials on July 28 as he geared up for his
return. “My fitness is pretty good,” Bosson said.
“I’m still working out in the gym at Te Akau
and I’m much lighter than I was at the same
time last season. I’ve been riding a lot of nice
horses for the last few seasons and while it’s not
for me to say how well I’m riding, I’m always
trying to limit mistakes. I go out there with a
plan: A, B, and C, and see how the race unfolds.
But I do get disappointed with myself if I make
a mistake.” Bosson is excited for his spring
battalion, including Need I Say More (No Nay
Never), who caught the eye at Te Rapa: “Need
I Say More could be one to follow after trialling
so well at Te Rapa, and he’s already won a
Group 3 in two starts. He’s got such a big stride
and I think he’ll handle better footing.”
Judy causes Te Aroha surpriseTrainer David Greene received a pleasant
surprise at Te Aroha yesterday when debutant
Judy’s Song (Niagara) raced away in the closing
stages of a 1200-metre maiden to score an
unexpected victory. Greene had earmarked the
four-year-old as a potential stayer that would
need more ground before showing her best,
but she produced a stunning performance in
the hands of apprentice Tegan Newman as
she came from near last on the home bend to
win decisively by three and a half lengths. “She
had only had the one trial over 900 metres and
was outpaced most of the way so we weren’t
expecting too much today,” Greene said. “In
saying that her last 100 metres that day and then
past the post was very good but I did think 1200
metres would be too short for her. I was actually
going to give her another trial and maybe then
line her up over a mile so it’s great to get a
win on raceday here instead. The heavy track
certainly helped but she was very impressive in
the final furlong and very strong at the finish.”
INTERNATIONAL
15 for Bated BreathCairn Gorm (2 c ex In Your Time by Dalakhani)
retained his unbeaten record and provided jet-
setting jockey Tom Marquand with another
international stakes race victory when taking
the Prix de Cabourg (Gr 3, 1200m) yesterday at
Deauville in France. The British raider defeated
compatriot Jubilation (Acclamation) by a length
with Prince Lancelot (Sir Prancealot) back in
third. The winner became the fifteenth stakes
winner for his sire, Bated Breath (Dansili) who
stands at Juddmonte Farms in Great Britain for
£12,500 (approx AUD$22,900).
Watch Me victoriousWatch Me (Olympic Glory) landed the second
Group 1 victory of her career yesterday at
Deauville when narrowly taking the Prix
Rothschild (Gr 1, 1600m) by defeating Half
Light (Shamardal) and Know It All (Lord
Kanaloa) in a tight finish. Watch Me travelled
well for most of the race, and moved readily
to the front when asked by French champion
Pierre-Charles Boudot, but she had to fight
hard to repel the sustained challenges of
the second and third placed fillies, both of
whom ran with great credit. A shock winner
at Royal Ascot when taking the Coronation
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at 20/1 as a three-year-old,
Watch Me was a short priced favourite for
this contest. The daughter of Olympic Glory
(Choisir) is a half-sister to dual British winner
The Emperor Within (Holy Roman
Emperor).
Wisdom wins WellWell Of Wisdom (Oasis Dream) gained a
deserved win in the Prix de Tourgeville (Listed,
1600m) at Deaville, having acted as companion
and pacemaker for Pinatubo (Dubawi) at
Group 1 level last time out in France. He was
perhaps fortunate to win, with the runner up
Kenway (Galiway) enduring a horror passage
throughout the final stages of the race, and
just failing to real in the winner. Charlesquint
(Showcasing) was close up in third. Well Of
Wisdom is a half-brother to three stakes race
winners, including multiple Group 1 winner
in Australia, Avilius (Pivotal). Oasis Dream
(Green Desert) stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead
Manor Stud in Great Britain for £25,000 (approx
AUD$45,800).

Dettori and Gosden take German Oaks
The powerful combination of John Gosden
and Frankie Dettori teamed up to win the
Henkel-Preis der Diana (German Oaks, Gr
1, 2200m) with Miss Yoda (Sea The Stars) at
Dusseldorf yesterday. The winner made the
most of a good draw in stall one to defeat
Zamrud (Samum) and Virginia Joy (Soldier
Hollow). The daughter of Sea The Stars added
a valuable bit of Group 1 black type to her
record and became her sire’s 14th individual
Group 1 winner. Miss Yoda was a €280,000
purchase from the 2018 Baden Baden Yearling
Sales; her dam Monami (Sholakhov) won a
German Group 2 while Sea The Stars stands at
Gilltown Stud in Ireland for €150,000 (approx
AUD$247,000) in 2020.
Six for BelardoTitan Rock provided Belardo (Lope De Vega)
with his sixth winner when taking out the EBF
Maiden Stakes (7f) at Goodwood on Saturday
for trainer John Quinn and jockey Daniel
Tudhope. Despite ducking to his right on
leaving the stalls and racing keenly, the colt
stayed on well to defeat Raging Rascal (Coulsty)
and Longlai (Shalaa) by half a length. Quinn
was full of praise for his galloper after the race,
saying: “He's a fine, big animal and I said to the
owner we're getting a good bit back on what
you paid for him so it's worth it. He's a grand
colt.” The winner is a half-brother to Listed
winner Argentero (Zoffany) and his dam, the
Pivotal mare Frabjous, is a half-sister to French
Group 1 winner May Ball (Cadeaux Genereux).
Belardo stands at Haunui Farm in New Zealand
for NZ$10,000.

Inglis has unveiled its 2021 sale dates
with the company’s Classic, Premier
and Australian Easter yearling sales
maintaining their traditional places on
the calendar but the auction house yesterday
confirmed that two smaller auctions would be
altered next year.
The HTBA Scone Yearling Sale, held at
Riverside Stables last month, will now be
permanently staged in Sydney after a number
of high-profile metropolitan trainers bolstered
the buying bench at the auction, which is
normally conducted at White Park.
The Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale has also
been pushed back from a planned April date
to mid-May to avoid a probable clash with the
New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale.
NZB is expected to announce on August
31 that its 2021 Karaka sale, normally held in
the last week in January, will take place from
April 19 in the hope that a trans-Tasman travel
bubble will be implemented by the respective
Australian and New Zealand governments by
then to allow international buyers to attend.
“There is no disguising that the year to date
has generated a huge number of challenges,
but we have worked very hard as a team to
help vendors achieve optimum outcomes in
as many instances as possible,’’ Inglis general
manager of bloodstock sales and marketing
Sebastian Hutch said.
“It has been hugely rewarding to see the growth
in key metrics across sales like Classic and Premier
in particular and while it was disappointing to
have circumstances conspire against what was
on-track to be the best ever Easter Yearling Sale,
our experiences this year have made us even more
determined to leave no stone unturned in pursuit
of the best results for our patrons.
“Each of the Highway Session at Classic, the
Showcase Session at Premier, the Gold Yearling
Sale and the Scone Yearling Sale posted
remarkable figures under the circumstances
and in the case of the latter sale, this year’s
results have prompted a further expansion of it.
“Our sales offer a depth and variety
of buyers that is unparalleled and this is
something we work extremely hard on, right
throughout the year.”
The Classic sale is scheduled for February 7 to
9, the Melbourne Premier for Feb 28 to Mar 2 and
the flagship Easter auction for April 6 and 7. The
rebranded HTBA May Yearling Sale will be expanded
to two days and be conducted on May 2 and 3.
The Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale will then
follow at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, May 16.
“Whether attending a sale in person,
working with members of our bloodstock
team or bidding through our online platform
– which recorded over 3600 individual bids
through our yearling sales series this year
– we are in a position to offer a standard of
service to our buyers which is unmatched and
this is something our vendors can have huge
confidence in,” Hutch said.
“As a team we have demonstrated the
capacity to work effectively with vendors
through any number of challenges this year and
it will stand us in good stead over the next 12
months and beyond.
“The very simple fact is buyers want to spend
their money on horses that will help them to win
the best races and Inglis offers more of those than
anyone else - our sales have produced double the
number of Group 1 winners of any other Australasian
auction house over the past three years.’’
The most controversial part of Inglis’
announcement is likely to be the fact that the
company will no longer hold the HTBA sale in
Scone.
Last month, after holding the Scone sale
in Sydney due to Covid-19 restrictions, Inglis
managing director Mark Webster said: “It’s the
first time we’ve held a Scone sale in Sydney
and I think the results were really encouraging.
There were buyers who don’t normally attend
the Scone sale.
“They were here for the Easter sale and they
found Scone yearlings in the catalogue that they
wouldn’t normally have purchased and John
Hawkes is the classic example of that buying
the top lot for $180,000 and another couple for
around $70,000.
“That is something for us to think about
with the Scone sale in terms of the format and
the timing and possibly even the location. We
shouldn’t just carry on as normal, we should
stop and think about it.”
