Joe Kirk: 'Hajj the Poet'. A big welcome back is extended toJoe, last seen in this theater as Daddy Warbucks in the highlyacclaimed WVLOA production of "Annie". Among Joe's manyother roles, he has played Mayor Shinn in "Music Man", SirEvelyn in "Anything Goes" for San Jose Civic Light Opera, HenryHiggins in "My Fair Lady" and Charly in "Blythe Spirit" for GilroyCommunity Players, and performed in "Little Mary Sunshine","South Pacific", "Sound of Music", "The Odd Couple" and "DeathTrap". Joe is married to a therapist and is the father of six. His full time career is thatof a dentist. In his spare time, Joe writes poetry and is currently working on a screenplay. We finally figured out that the only time Joe has left to learn his lines and musicis while he works on his patients. (Ouch ...) Good to have you back, Doc.

-AI Gunby: 'Wazir'. AI Gunby returns to the WVLOA stage for thefirst time since his ERMA-award winning portrayal of Cervantes/Quixote in "Man of La Mancha". Since then, he was a'barbershopper' in SJCLO's "Music Man", for which he won a'Ginny' award, Kit Carson in "The Time of Your Life" for FoothillCollege, the Herald in "Cinderella" for SDG, Mortimer in ''TheGhosts of Sarah Winchester" for City Lights, and Cervantes/Quixote, again, for Sunnyvale Players, and, again, reaping a

"Sunny" award. Other credits include Charley in "Brigadoon", Herman and Joe in "MostHappy Fella", Cosmo in "Call Me Madam", and Owen in "On The Twentieth Century".After 20 plus years in musical theater, AI is excited about finally playing in "Kismet", oneof his three favorite shows, especially portraying the "comic malevolence" of the Wazir. When not in rehearsal, he is a research engineer at Lockheed's Space Station Project. It's a pleasure to welcome AI back.

Catherine Petrek: 'Lalume' A fifth generation Californian,Catherine is originally from St. Helena in the wine country. Herfather was in the wine industry for over fifty years, in Napa,Sonoma, and Santa Clara Counties. Her mother was a pianist.Catherine, one of seven children, was a graduate of San JoseState University. She admits to having lived outside of the'Golden State' for just a few years. Mother of two teen-ageddaughters and wife of an airline pilot, Catherine still finds time togive private vocal instruction to many local singers. One of her very fine students,Robert Greene, portrayed Petrucchio in WVLOA's "Kiss Me, Kate" last season.Catherine's own vocal career started in high school and continued in college and localcommunity theater. She has worked with Opera San Jose for ten years, as well ashaving performed with West Bay Opera, the San Jose Gilbert & Sullivan SOCiety andWest Valley Light Opera Association. Her favorite roles are Hannah Glawari in "TheMerry Widow", and Violetta in "La Traviata". We hope she will add her portrayal ofLalume to her list of favorites.

Page 7: Directed By PAMELA RICARD Kismet.pdf · 2016. 3. 26. · win the part of Maria Von Trapp, her favorite role. Robert Sedgwick: 'Caliph'. About to celebrate an important birthday, good-natured

Anneka van Mastrigt: 'Marsinah'. A young lady of many talents,Anneka as last seen on this stage as Rapunzel in the WVLOAproduction of "Into The WOfJds". She began her musical career inher sophomore year in high school in "Guys And Dolls". Annekawas also a competitive ice skater for ten years and still found timeto play piano and flute. Originally from Los Angeles, Anneka hasresided in our great valley for nine years, where she was a musicmajor at San Jose State. Many of you may remember having seenAnneka as Hodel in "Fiddler on the Roof', and as Sister Sophia in "Sound of Music",both for WVLOA. A bit of a tease, and always in good humor, it is a pleasure to haveher in our production. Perhaps the next time we produce "Sound of Music", Anneka willwin the part of Maria Von Trapp, her favorite role.

Robert Sedgwick: 'Caliph'. About to celebrate an importantbirthday, good-natured Bob takes a lot of ribbing from everyoneinvolved in Kismet. He is also learning to take in his stride thedemands made upon one with a leading role. A native ofWashington, D.C., Bob has been in Silicon Valley for fourteenyears. Happily, he has been involved with WVLOA, off and on, fortwelve of those years, starting with Oklahoma in 1979. A divorceattorney in real life, Bob studied law at American University inWashington, and Industrial Engineering at Purdue. Among his favorite roles, he listsMotel in "Fiddler on the Roof" for SDG, Matt in "The Fantastiks" for North Valley Playersand Lucentio in "Kiss Me Kate" for WVLOA. In spite of his congeniality our Bob is stilla bachelor. Go get him, girls!!!

Don Jensen: 'Ornar Khayyam'. The son of a Danish immigrantfather and a German mother, Don, an Air Force Colonel, (Ret.), ismarried to the president of his own fan club, Iris. They have threewonderful sons, all over6'4". Don is making his debut with WVLOin the role of Omar Khayyam. He enjoys people, music, theater, flying, golf, treasure hunting, traveling and a good joke. A grad-uate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, carrying an MS fromthe University of Oklahoma, he is an engineering manager in theaerospace industry at Lockheed. He's been around this area for about 30 years, withabsences for overseas military duty. Don, too, comes to us from the San Jose Gilbert& Sullivan Society, having performed as Sir Marmaduke in 'Sorcerer', Adam in'Ruddigore', and Captain Corcoran in "HMS Pinafore". He is a delight to be around, hisattitude and professionalism shining brightly every night. We welcome him and hopeto see him back with us soon.

Richard Frazier: 'Imam', 'Bangle Man', 'Pearl Merchant'. Oneof the new-comers to WVLOA in this show, Richard comes to usfrom the San Jose Gilbert & Sullivan Society, after having per-formed with them in Mikado, Yeoman of the Guard, and the recentproduction of G&S music seen here at this theater. He has beenin numerous singing groups, in high school plays and simplyenjoys being a part of a musical show. When not on stage,Richard is a highly respected Kaiser Vascular Surgeon. He wasin private practice before joining Kaiser, having finished medical school in 1972. Bornin bodge City, Kansas, he has been married for 28 years to his lovely wife, Donna. Our'Lalume', Catherine Petrek, also turns out to be his vocal instructor. It's interesting tosee student and teacher working together. The numerous roles Richard is attendingto in this production does not faze him a bit. He is a very welcome addition to the WestValley Light Opera family.

Pamela Ricard: Director. After having discussed directing thisshow with approximately 10 prospective directors, the producersselected Pamela to direct this production of Kismet. Pamela hailsfrom the East Coast, namely Boston, Mass. She's been in thisarea for 11 years, sporting degrees from U.C. Berkeley, and theStella Adler Conservatory of Acting in N.Y.C. After the 4th grade.Pamela wrote, produced, directed and starred in her first originalplay. Professionally, she has been in theater either to perform,

direct or teach for 17 years. When asked what her favorite roles are, Pamela says'Every play I do becomes my favorite as I become immersed in discovering what it hasto offer, to teach me.' The cast, a lot of them having performed previously with WVLOA,are quite impressed with her. Pamela is also impressed 'by the enthusiasm, professionalism and committment to high quality theater that West Valley Light Operarepresents.' As a parting statement, Pamela suggests 'Support your local theater, andit will support you.' We welcome Pamela Ricard and hope you will enjoy the directionshe has given to this production.

Alan Haydis: Music Director. Out of the frying pan, into the fire, aptly describes our maestro, who just completed a successful runof Saratoga Drama Group's production of "Nine". He is perhaps themost dedicated music director we have ever worked with. Hisattention to detail goes far beyond conducting the musicians he soably leads. Alan works closely with choral directors to insure thatour singers perform to the best of their ability as well as withchoreographers to provide the right background for the dancers. JThis same dedication is given at Ley Va Middle School in the Evergreen School Districtwhere Alan teaches music, math and shop classes, and directs an award-winningmarching band. During one of our first days of rehearsal, Alan came to the rescue whena power failure occurred and he hooked up a generator to provide lights for us. True toshow business tradition, the show must go on. As long as Alan is around, it certainly will.

Page 9: Directed By PAMELA RICARD Kismet.pdf · 2016. 3. 26. · win the part of Maria Von Trapp, her favorite role. Robert Sedgwick: 'Caliph'. About to celebrate an important birthday, good-natured

Kathleen Hamon: Choral Director. A vocal teacher for over 15years, 'Kate' has enjoyed putting our singers through their paces.Always ready with a quip or a funny story, the cast has enjoyedworking with this talented lady. Kathleen not only relishes incoaching singers, she also does a fine job of performing. She waslast seen as Claudia Nardi in the Saratoga Drama Group'sproduction of "Nine". Kathleen also was seen in the role of Goldein "Fiddler on the Roof" locally. Other area companies she has lenther talents to are Santa Clara Players, and San Jose Civic Light Opera. On stage oroff, it is a pleasure to have Kathleen on the scene.

Leslie Hardy: Choreographer. Leslie made her choreographicM debut with WVLOA with "Fiddler on the Roof", but she is no

stranger to our audiences. She appeared in our production of"Flower Drum Song", and with SDG's production of "70, Girls, 70",and most recently, as Young Belle in "Little Me". Leslie is one ofthose rare California natives and is a veteran performer. Sheapplies her teaching and dancing talents to every stage fromkindergarteners in the morning, high schoolers in the afternooon,

to the theatrical troupes in the evening. Needless to say, she has a very busy schedule. She is also a regular performer in "Mystery By Design" productions so we believe it was"Fate" that Leslie was able to join our staff and share her wonderful abilities and talents.

FROM THE PRODUCERS

'Kismet' is often advertised as 'A Musical Arabian Night'. It is not, according to thepublishers. The'Arabian Nights' ...'One Thousand and One Nights' ...period is severalcenturies earlier, much more brutal and medieval. The previous statement was takenfrom the publishers notes in the script of 'Kismet'. Now, normally, most people wouldonly have a fleeting knowledge of where it is. Today, though, everyone knows whereif. Children could probably draw a picture of Baghdad with the surrounding terrain andcountries and be very accurate. WVLOA decided to produce this musical in March,1990, well before any incursion was contemplated. 'Kismet', though, takes place in the11th Century. It was a beautiful time and a beautiful place. We can only hope that wehave come close to re-creating it here for you.

We would like to dedicate this production to our Armed Forces serving in the Middle JEast, fighting to preserve ourwayof life. May God bless them all, and bring them homesafe and sound, and soon.
