Gridded Questions: Gridded questions are used when you wish students to “Calculate” and record their answers without having a choice of answer options. Great for math tests to assess calculation abilities.

Step 1: Select Gridded for your question type. Step 2: Click to add the content of your question. Step 3: Select the number of columns needed for the actual answer to be recorded. Step 4: Key in the correct answer. Step 5: Assign the number of points to be earned. Step 6: Choose the standard. Step 7: Click Return to Test Detail to “save” the question.

Examples of this type of question:

>Find the product for 25 x 5. (Answer is 125 which needs 3 columns)

 Find the sum. 2.5 + 3.2

(Answer is 5.7 which would require 3 columns. The middle column would be the decimal point. Students would key in a period for the decimal point.)

Open Response Questions: Use open response questions when you need a written answer to a prompt or an explanation to how you solved a problem. [Math

problems that require symbols for some high school courses will not be available to students in an online setting. This should be restricted to taking the test using the plain paper answer sheets.]

If students just need to type in text and/or simple equations (8+5=13) that are possible with a keyboard, then math questions like these are okay to answer online. Step 1: Select Open Response for your question type. Step 2: Click to add your question or writing prompt under the item number. Step 3: Enter the number or points that can be earned. Step 4: Use the arrow to select the size of the text box for the answer. (A written solution with multiple paragraphs may need 1 page.) Step 5: Select the appropriate standard. Step 6: Click to add Scoring instructions that instruct the teacher on what should be included in the response. Step 7: Rubrics are new! Teachers can create their own rubrics in SchoolNet and upload them for use with their questions. Step 8: Check that you have NO Alerts! Step 9: Click Return to Test Detail to “save” your question.

Inline Response This question is like a fill in the blank where the answers are selected from the drop down sections instead of typing in the response. (Great for any subject including math where missing quantities and/or text is missing.)

Step 1: Select Inline Response for your question type. Step 2: Click to add the question as shown below.

Step 3: As you enter your question, insert a gap where you need to leave a “blank”. This will provide a place to enter options for the answer. Save the question.

Step 4: Once you save the question the screen refreshes and you now need to identify the GAP (or gaps). You can have more than one GAP in a question. You would need to select the number of the gap to then enter the answer choices and check the one that is correct. Be sure you have a number of points identified as well. If you have more than one gap, click the tab for the next gap and enter answers, mark correct answer and enter point value. Step 5: Select the standard. Step 6: Check that you have No Alerts. Step 7: Click Return to Test Detail to “save” the question.

This question type is ideal for written text that requires students to fill in the blank with the correct name, number or other information. Remember this is like leaving a “blank” for a student to write in the answer that is missing.

Matching Questions: When you need to provide items for matching that you would like to have as one question, use the matching type of question. This question is great for matching vocabulary and meanings, capitals and states, events and their importance or date, etc.

Step 1: Select Matching for your question type. Step 2: Click to add the student directions for the matching problem. Step 3: Key in the Question Stems (or left column) that are what you want the students to match to the answers given. Step 4. Key in the answer options under Available Choices. (the default is one extra).

Step 5: Key in the correct matching letter before the Question stems. Be sure to enter a point value if you desire anything other than one. I recommend you leave each at 1 point.

Step 6: Select the appropriate standard. Step 7: Check for NO Alerts. Step 8: Click Return to Test Detail to “save” the question.

The following pages provide a glimpse of each question type as it appears in an online test a student would take. These previews help you visualize how your questions should be created in a test.
