OUR REGIONGREATER EL DORADOEl Dorado County’s vast golden foothills are home to spectacular and distinct wineries at various elevations and microclimates. These wineries cultivate the very soils of the California Gold Rush. They can be found nestled within a valley or atop gently rolling hills, offering visitors the very best of El Dorado.

PLEASANT VALLEYLocated in the heart of El Dorado Wine Country, the family wineries here are set in a lush Ponderosa pine and oak landscape. Wild flower meadows, horse ranches and breathtaking views are the gateway to diverse microclimates, complex wines and unforgettable foothill hospitality.

APPLE HILL™/ CAMINOThere’s a seductive, high-mountain feel in the air along this rolling stretch just north of Highway 50. The area blends long-established wineries and exciting newcomers with apple orchards, vast views and a sense that the American River Canyon is just out of sight.

FAIR PLAYThis surprising region is close to everything, yet feels like its own world. With thick woods and quiet meadows, you’ll find numerous wineries and varied wine styles. For every mountain top vista there’s a tucked-away winery for you to discover.

In El Dorado County, the vintner’s strength is the land’s terrain: hundreds of microclimates provide a broad range of temperatures, exposures and soils. When well matched, this topography provides an ideal location for the world’s finest wine grapes, hailing from Bordeaux, the Rhône, Germany, Italy and Spain. That’s what we call “Right Grape, Right Place.”

GRAPE VARIETALS

3130

REDSAGLIANICO (ahl-YAH-nee-ko) - A black grape grown in the Basilicata and Campania regions of Italy. In well-made examples of the wine, it can have chocolate and plum aromas.

BARBERA (Bar-Bear-ah) - A red Italian wine grape variety. Flavors can vary from plum and cherry, to undertones of sweet vanilla.

CABERNET FRANC (Cah-burr-nay-Frank) - A black grape variety originating in France. Depending on the growing region and style of wine, aromas can include tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, cassis and violets.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON (Cah-burr-Nay-Sow-vee-nyon) - A red grape originating from Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon tends to produce wines with black currant notes that can be accompanied by green bell pepper notes, mint and cedar. CARIGNAN (Cah-reen-yawN) - A red Spanish/French wine grape variety. Carignan is only rarely made as a varietal wine, but the best examples can show characteristics of dark and black fruits, pepper and licorice – with spicy and savory accents. CHARBONO (Shar-BOE-noe) - A red French wine grape variety. The wines often have a black fruit and plum aroma with flavor notes that can develop into leather or tar notes as the wine ages. CINSAULT (SaN-so) - A dark-skinned grape variety traditionally used as a blending partner for Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre as part of the classic southern Rhône blend. Light red berries are the most commonly associated flavor descriptors.

COUNOISE (Coon-wahz) - A dark-skinned wine grape grown primarily in the Rhône valley region of France. Counoise is often described as a peppery and spicy grape variety, but it also has hints of plum and wild berry (strawberry and raspberry) flavors. GRACIANO (Grah-ee-YAH-noh) - A Spanish black-skinned grape variety that is grown primarily in Rioja. The flavors of Graciano wine are dark and concentrated, often showing licorice scents with a spicy element.

GRENACHE (Greh-nash) - A red wine grape also know as Garnacha, which most likely originated in Spain. Generally, it is spicy and berry-flavored. As Grenache ages, the wines tend to take on leather and tar flavors.

MALBEC (Mal-Bec) - Malbec is a red grape variety, originally from southwestern France. Flavors vary from mulberry and blackberry, to tar and leather.

MERLOT (Mer-low) - Merlot is a red wine with medium to full body. This grape tends to have hints of black cherry and herbal flavors. Merlot is typically smooth, soft and mellow.

MISSION (MISH-uhn) - A red grape introduced from Spain by Catholic New World missionaries for use in making sacramental, table and fortified wines.

MOURVÈDRE (Moor-VED’rr) - This warm-weather, red wine grape is common in southern France’s Rhône Valley. This grape is rich in color with early aromas.

NEBBIOLO (Nehb-bee-Oh-low) - An Italian red grape variety with a range of violet and rose-like perfumes. Undertones include truffle, fennel, licorice and tar.

NEGROAMARO (Neh-groh-ah-MAH-roh) - Negroamaro is Puglia’s main red grape variety that produces ripe, sometimes raisin and chocolate tasting, Mediterranean reds.

PETIT VERDOT (Peh-tee Vehr-doe) - A variety of red wine grape, principally used in classic Bordeaux blends. It adds a unique flavor profile that can manifest itself with aromas of flowers, olives or when very ripe, blueberry.

PETITE SIRAH (Peh-teet See-rah) - A black-skinned grape variety know as Durif to the rest of the world. Primary flavors often associated with the wine are blackberry, chocolate and black pepper. PINOT NOIR (Pee-noh-nwar) - A red grape from Burgundy – and more recently, California and the Pacific Northwest. Pinot Noir is typically a lighter-medium bodied, fruit-forward red wine.
