Office of the Director of Education

CATHOLIC PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES On October 12th, 2004 the Office of the Director of Education informed the TCDSB community that a review of the status of the Catholic Professional Learning Community initiative would be reviewed by an outside group of consultants led by Michael Fullan and Dan Lang. The review has now been completed and the report will be forwarded shortly. Essentially, the review concludes that all of the evidence to date indicates that the pilot Catholic Professional Learning Communities established in June 2002 have yielded positive results in terms of improved student achievement and increased professional capacity in teachers and administrators. We are encouraged by the findings of the report and are convinced that continued commitment to the sustainability of Catholic Professional Learning Communities will foster collaboration amongst all of our stakeholders in Catholic Education, actively promote student learning and provide an excellent vehicle for the delivery of job embedded professional development. Over the coming year a steering committee and an advisory group will guide the work of the Catholic Professional Learning Communities of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Members of this strategic steering committee include:

Mario Bernardo, Second Vice President, TECT Dolores Cascone, PLC Teacher, St. Timothy Catholic School Angela Gauthier, Superintendent of Education George Kolos, First Vice President, TSU Les Nemes, Executive Superintendent of Education, Academic Affairs Noel Martin, Interim Director of Education Sandra Montgomery, Superintendent of Education, Special Services Catholic Professional Learning Frank Piddisi, Principal, Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School Gary Poole, Superintendent of Education John Vale, Principal, St. Marcellus Catholic School Marina Vanayan, Research Associate Mark Fenwick, Acting Superintendent of Curriculum & Accountability The final report will be sent out shortly. We invite you to read the report and we welcome your comments and reactions. Please forward your input to - Catholic Professional Learning Communities - Strategic Steering Committee c/o Vera Rendine, Executive Office.

FROM THE BOARD

Summary of Board Highlights and Decisions _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thursday, May 5, 2005 Human Resources, Program & Religious Affairs Committee

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OSSLT Results Show Improvement The Toronto Catholic District School Board's results on the October 2004 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test show that TCDSB students continue to improve in their overall literacy skills. A total of 78% of first-time eligible students were successful on the assessment. This represents an increase of 6% in achievement compared with the results of the October 2003 results, when 72% of students successfully completed the test.

The Board continues to provide students a wide range of programs and services to support all students, with a particular emphasis on supporting students at risk, through its Success for All initiative. Of the previously eligible TCDSB students 62% were successful in the October 2004 administration of the OSSLT. In addition 16% of previously eligible students have met graduation requirements by taking the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

Individual school and school board results for the October 2004 OSSLT are posted on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com Donation to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund The Board was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $15,529 to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The money was collected by TCDSB schools during their toonie days held during African Heritage/Black History Month. Extended-Day Program to Continue The Board will continue to operate an Extended-Day International Languages Program at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. The Portuguese language program at that school is now mandatory for all students. Staff congratulated for Special Olympics event Staff at the elementary cross-country championship were commended for the manner in which they ran the Special Olympics event on Wednesday May 4, 2005 at Morningside Park at the city-wide cross-county championship. Our Lady of Lourdes “Kindergarten Welcome Bag” On May 4, 2005 Our Lady of Lourdes hosted our first Kindergarten Welcome Bag event. Our four Kindergarten teachers modeled various activities that can be done with the resources provided by The Learning Partnership

organization. Parents and new J.K students were so excited to have a hands-on opportunity to experiment with their new learning resources. In addition, Mrs. Brand our Superintendent of Education and Mrs. LeBlanc-Miller our Trustee, assisted in distributing our Welcome Bags and welcomed our new parents and students to our community. Smiles, words of appreciation and enthusiasm for September 2005 were shared as guests walked away with their own personal bags. This was a great example of partnerships in the making. We thank The Learning Partnership, TD Financial Group, all Kindergarten teachers and Board members for your support in making this event such a success!

McGuigan’s In The Drivers Seat ! To begin commemorating Respect For Life Week, on Monday May 9th, 2005, the students of James Cardinal McGuigan C.H.S. participated in various activities related to responsible driving practices. The morning began with a video presentation from Mothers Against Drunk Driving. As well, two officers from the Traffic Division of Toronto Police made presentations to the assembly. The students learned the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A visual display of a traffic fatality caused in a car wreck was placed on the front lawn to graphically demonstrate the reality of being irresponsible. During the lunch periods, the students were able to sample "mocktails" and to have a good time responsibly without alcoholic beverages. A Toronto Public Health Nurse was also available to explain the interactive display board which allowed students to simulate driving while impaired. Information flyers were also made available to all. All of these events were organized by a committee of staff and student volunteers called Teens Take Action. James Cardinal McGuigan - Dream Big: A Life Lesson with Tiger Woods At James Cardinal McGuigan several of our Special Needs students attended this new and distinctive learning experience workshop recently. The Tiger Woods Dream Big program stresses the importance of character, integrity and hard work exemplified by Tiger Woods and uses him as a role model to help young people to set their own goals. This mentor focused program is led by experienced and positive volunteers from the business world who provide opportunities for students to imagine their future, to understand the commitment needed to reach their potential or ‘fulfill their dream’ and to understand the importance of personal achievement in building strong communities. Workshop sessions focused on skills affirmation through a variety of activities designed to realize their future possibilities through reinforcement of skills and identification of areas of growth. Students were further encouraged to confirm their dreams and to define the personal role of a mentor through role-play activities, engaging others with diverse life experiences. Students are finally encouraged to visualize their dreams and learn how to direct their future through a personal action plan.Twenty students completed the all day session and received a Certificate of Participation from the presenters. Those who completed the program felt a sense of achievement and they commented that receiving the certificate presented a tangible representation of their accomplishments that day.

McGuigan / St. Wilfrid’s Team Up ! The Professional Learning Centre at St. Wilfrid Elementary School, in association with the Guidance Department at James Cardinal McGuigan High School, put on a highly successful Career Fair on Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Career representatives from a wide range of professions such as police, firefighting, hospitality, television broadcasting and marketing made presentations and conducted question and answer sessions highlighting requirements, expectations and rewards for their respective careers. A collaborative effort between the guidance personnel of the elementary (Mrs. R. De Fina) and secondary panels (Mr. M. D’Agostino and Mrs. D. Di Manno) created the possibility for grade 6 and 7 students in the north sector from St. Augustine, St. Charles Garnier, St. Francis de Sales, St. Jerome and St. Wilfrid’s and grade 10 students at James Cardinal McGuigan to explore and gather information on careers of potential interest. Students, teachers, and career professionals found the day to be tremendously successful in exposing students to the vast array of career pathways available to them. Plans are already underway for next year’s career fair. Special thanks to Mr J. Onorati from the Professional Learning Centre at St. Wilfrid’s and Mr. J. Matthews from James Cardinal Mcguigan for their support in the promotion of Career Day.
