Can I use it or can’t I?
• For people who want to put teaching material into RADAR - and the session will also apply to putting material into Brookes Virtual
• Looking at using images and film and video
• Concentrating on images and video that you can find on the internet
• Looking at how to work out whether you can use the material you’ve found
• Time for questions at the end – and do contact me to follow up specific questions
Directorate of Learning Resources
Does the law allow me to use images for teaching?
• Basically, no
• The law allows material to be copied for coursework and for private study, but not for teaching
Directorate of Learning Resources
So can I use images from the internet?
• This depends partly on whether the web pages explicitly say that you can use their images
Directorate of Learning Resources
Some web sites say ‘no’ clearly
• And this means you can’t use their images
• eg the National Portrait Gallery:

Some web sites don’t say
• And this means you can’t use their images
• eg the Ecclesiological Society
• http://www.ecclsoc.org/
Directorate of Learning Resources
Some web sites say ‘yes’
• And this means you can use their images – under the conditions they set
• Eg the National Gallery
• http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/
Directorate of Learning Resources
Some web sites say ‘yes’ – but can you trust them?
• Eg, an Advanced Google Image search allows you to limit the search to images ‘licenced for reuse’
• http://www.google.co.uk/advanced_image_search?hl=en
Directorate of Learning Resources
Why you should distrust a web site’s permission to use images
• Because the advice is based on laws in a different country
• Because they are using unsafe interpretations of the law
• Because the web site doesn’t understand the law – or allows contributions from people who don’t understand the law
