Dear Upward Parents,
I can’t believe how quickly we’ve crossed the mid-season mark as we approach Game #5 of 8 tomorrow. As I made my rounds
at practices this week, it was noticeable how much the players have improved. There is a rhythm to the practices that regularly
includes drills, devotions, and scrimmages, and the children are adapting well to the routine.
By now we are well on our way to meeting the objectives of each division. The Kindergartners are learning to take direction
from the Coach. The Primary players are gaining an understanding of the different positions and rotating through the roster.
And, I’ve seen the Uppers learning offensive and defensive strategy and determining their position of choice. Now that
practices are more controlled, I also see the Coaches take more time with devotions and scripture learning. Our focus is on the
virtues of gratitude, obedience and trust.
I have a few important announcements to take note of:
The pictures will be distributed next week on Game Day. Please make arrangements with me to get your pictures if you cannot
attend. If you want to order a team photo or additional individual shots, please contact Bethany at 843-319-1592 or at
As of last week’s game, the Referees are calling the Primary and Upper games by the book. Keep in mind, the Upward rule book
differs from traditional soccer, but you will see changes in how throw-ins and off-sides are handled, and the coaches must stay
on the sidelines or behind the goal lines.
The weather is changing and it is pretty chilly on Saturday mornings. Please dress your players in layers to maintain their
comfort leaving the jersey as the outer-most layer. We need to see their numbers during game play. The cold weather doesn’t
however, change the need to stay hydrated. The water coolers are on the sidelines on game day, but please make sure your
child has water for practice.
SAVE THE DATE! November 3rd
is our last game, but we will return to the Worship Center for Award Night from 4:00-6:00 PM.
This is a special night of fellowship for our players, families and friends that includes team/player recognition, a great
entertainer and a surprise to take home. You won’t want to miss it! Please email me as many photos as you wish from the
season including game play, practices, spectators, etc. I will select as many as possible and put together a slide show to share
at the program. You can send some now and throughout the remaining weeks. Thanks in advance!
Lastly, as I’ve said from day one, we must stay flexible. In that spirit, I have taken on the Head Coach role of the upper
Hawkeyes. My son Matthew, an Upward alumnus and referee from the Primary division, will be assisting us. I am looking
forward to finishing out the season with this great bunch of kids! I am still serving as the League Director and am available to
each of you. Thanks to all involved for supporting this transition.
I hope you’re having a great time this year. Keep looking UPWARD and to God be the glory!
