Saskatchewan Mining CompaniesDIRECTORY

2015

Saskatchewan’s mining industry is vibrant and diverse. Saskatchewan is the world’s leading producer of potash and second leading producer of uranium. It consis-tently ranks in the top three jurisdictions in Canada in terms of the value of minerals produced.

There are over 25 different mine opera-tions that stretch across the province from coal mines in the south, uranium and gold mines in the north to potash mines that run across the central-southern belt from Saskatoon to the Manitoba border at Es-terhazy and Rocanville. Saskatchewan has been a past producer of Cu-Zn, Ni, Pt, Pd and Zn, and we have the potential for rare earth elements and diamond production.

Over 90 per cent of Canada’s potash pro-duction originates in Saskatchewan mines. The only other mine is in New Brunswick. There are 10 existing brownfield potash

mines in Saskatchewan that have completed, or are

nearing completion of, significant ex-

pansions. One new greenfield mine is antici-

pated to be in production in 2017, with the possibility of new mines coming on-stream.

The majority of growth required to meet global demand is anticipated to come from existing brownfield expansions that pro-duced 16.8 M tonnes KCl in 2014. Existing producers – including PotashCorp, Mosaic and Agrium – have collectively committed to invest nearly $14 billion in their exist-ing operations to decrease bottlenecks and nearly double their pre-expansion capacity once expansions are completed. Two new headframes, one at PotashCorp Rocanville – Scissors Creek – and one at Mosaic Esterhazy K3, will provide signifi-cant new production capacity at these re-spective mines.

The big news regarding greenfield mines is that K+S Potash has success-fully advanced its $4.1 billion Legacy so-lution mine near Moose Jaw and remains on track for production in 2017 (cavern development was initiated in March). At full commercial production, the mine will produce 2.86 million tonnes per year (TPA) KCl. K+S is also continuing to conduct rail car testing and construct new handling and storage facilities in British Columbia. Meanwhile, work on BHP’s Jansen eight

million TPA mine project continues, with steady progress on the excava-

tion and lining of the production and service shafts and installation of essential surface infrastructure and utilities.

Since 1980, the uranium mining industry has

spent over $8.07 billion on ura-

nium mining projects in

Saskatchewan on top of operating expendi-tures. Total expenditures from 1980-2014 amount to $8,067,733,403. All of Canada’s uranium production capacity comes from Saskatchewan mines, accounting for 16 per cent of the world’s total production. Nuclear power also supplies roughly 16 per cent of Canada’s electricity needs. This makes uranium one of Canada’s largest, non-carbon emitting sources of energy in use today.

In September, Cameco officially started production at its Cigar Lake uranium mine and McClean Lake mill (the majority of which is owned by AREVA). The jet bor-ing mining system (JBS) continues to per-form as expected. There are now three JBS machines commissioned for use under-ground. As production ramps up to 18 mil-lion pounds (100 per cent basis) by 2018, volumes may not be linear year-to-year, varying based on operational experience.

There are over 30,500 people directly and indirectly employed by the mining in-dustry, including a vibrant mining supply sector that specializes in Saskatchewan’s unique mining needs.

The mining industry is a leading em-ployer of Aboriginal peoples and fostering the development of Aboriginal owned and operated businesses that support the min-ing sector – air and road transport, con-struction, catering, security and drilling.

On average, the mining industry con-tributes over $1 billion annually to the pro-vincial government in royalties, corporate taxes and income taxes. From 2008-2028, it is estimated that the mining industry will invest over $50 billion in developing new, and expanding existing mines and ongo-ing capital investment. $20 billion of that has been spent between 2008 and 2014.
