In addition to cultivat-ing independent workhabits, our classrooms, lessons and works alsoencourage our students towork together. As ourclassrooms consist ofthree traditional gradelevels, older students canoften be found assistingyounger students withworks newly presented to

them. This level of in-volvement, one of “be-coming the teacher,”further solidifies thelesson for the older stu-dent. Once they can teacha lesson, they have mas-tered a lesson.

This unique learningenvironment embracesthe teachings of Dr. Ma-ria Montessori. Her revo-lutionary new teachingmethods were introducedin the U.S. when she firstvisited, in 1915. As a re-sult of her visit, manystudents (and teachers)have flourished in theirlearning. At Cornerstone,we carry on this traditionin a loving and supportiveenvironment.

Colleges today areselective in the admissionprocess. They are lookingfor well-rounded students– students who are pre-pared academically, en-gaged socially, and readyto succeed at a higherlevel. The youngmen ofCovington Catholic arejust the type of studentscolleges seek.

AcademicallyPrepared

Covington Catholic isan all-male, college-prephigh school where 99percent of its graduatescontinue their educationat post-secondary in-stitutions. Colleges anduniversities across thecountry recognize thestrength of CovCath’sacademic program. Fromthe Class of 2012 alone, students will attendUCLA, Michigan, Purdueand Georgia Tech, as wellas local and state schoolsincluding UK, ThomasMore, Louisville, NKUand Xavier. Two gradu-ates will join the FightingIrish at the University ofNotre Dame.

One of the strengths ofCovington Catholic’s aca-demic program is itsAdvanced Placement(AP) curriculum. Stu-dents who take APcourses and the subse-quent national AP examscan earn college creditand/or placement intohigher level courses ifthey receive a 3 (out of apossible 5) or better onthe exam. CCH studentsdo extremely well on theexams.

High school students inthe Commonwealth ofKentucky have severalunique educational oppor-

tunities available to them, including the KentuckyEducational ExcellenceScholarship, or KEES,Governor’s Scholars Pro-gram and Governor’sSchool for the Arts. KEES

awards are based on howwell students do in school. The better the grades, themore money they earn. The 115 CCH graduates of2012 earned $168,000 inKEESmoney to attend

Kentucky colleges anduniversities.

The Governor’s Schol-ars Program (GSP) andthe Governor’s School forthe Arts (GSA) are resi-dential programs thattake place during thesummer on Kentuckycollege campuses. Theseprograms are free forstudents to attend. Theyare both highly compet-itive and only a selectnumber of studentsacross the state are cho-

sen to participate. In thepast five years, 22 Co-vington Catholic studentshave been selected forGSP and 15 for GSA.

Spiritually andSocially Engaged

Another significantaspect of a high schooleducation is what hap-pens outside the class-room. Extra-curricularsprovide an opportunityfor students to learn otherimportant things liketeamwork, perseveranceand commitment – wheth-er through writing for theschool newspaper or play-ing basketball. At Coving-ton Catholic, 100 percentof students are involvedin at least one extra-cur-ricular activity.

CCH students are ac-tively engaged in commu-nity service. While theannual requirement of thestudent body is to per-form 7,500 hours, they farexceed this expectation, providing more than16,000 hours of serviceeach year.

Each summer, members of the Covington Catholic community travel to Nicaragua for aweek-long mission trip. This past summer, they dug over 1,100 feet of ditches and pouredconcrete in 100-degree heat to put in lines to bring clean water to homes. Without theline, the women have to walk over seven miles a couple times a day to get water. PROVIDED
