FROM THE PRINCIPAL Last Friday we held our annual School Cross-Country. Congratulations to all students who competed! Great effort, your training certainly paid off!! It was great to have the support of so many parents and friends. Having spectators along the course certainly encouraged competitors to keep running and to do their best. NAPLAN Testing Our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will soon participate in the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to assess their skills and understanding in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The tests will be conducted in all state and non-state Schools across the country from 15–17 May. An individual NAPLAN report for each child will be sent home later this year. Results provide additional feedback for parents, carers and Teachers on how students are progressing in key curriculum areas. Please contact the School if you have any questions about NAPLAN testing. Further information is available on the ACARA website. (http://www.nap.edu.au/) On our NAPLAN testing days, we will be providing a special NAPLAN breakfast. Having a good breakfast is a great way to start each school day. We encourage all students, parents and staff to come and join us. Academic Success Guarantee (ASG) We have almost reached the half way point of this terms ASG cycle. Students are responding well to the extra in-class support being provided to students who are participating in ASG. Teachers have reported that many students are making great progress, as they strive to achieve their PLP reading and number goals for this term. Great work students, staff and parents! The overall student attendance so far this year is 87.6%. Remember that every day counts, the more students are at School the more available School time, and this must help in ensuring our students meet and beat the appropriate benchmarks by the end of the year. Again, keep up the good work students, staff and parents! Remember to be eligible for on-going inclusion in ASG, individual student attendance must be maintained at 90% or better, that is no more than 20 days absent for the year! Next Friday, mid-term ASG reports will go home to parents to provide an update on how students are progressing with their current PLP reading and number goals. The report will also provide an update on student attendance. SECONDARY SNAPSHOT Ag Studies: In Ag Studies this week, students have been learning about the cultural and religious reasons behind the sheep live export trade to the Middle East. The Muslim festivals of Ramadan and Hajj require 600,000 live sheep for slaughter at the end of their month long festival of fasting and praying. Students have also begun to deconstruct the animal transport law brochure which outlines laws that apply to producers, transporters, stock agents and receivals. The purpose of this is to decide which animal welfare laws have been broken by the ship transporter of the live sheep to the Middle East. Visual Arts: Years 7 and 8 Critical Deconstruction Portfolio containing the students analysis of the Visual Elements in the films ‘Bran Neu Dae’ and ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’. Housekeeping: Awaiting all letters for student vendor tickets, for the Paul Kelly concert to be returned to school. If you have any questions about this, please contact the school.
