We’ve all been eagerly anticipating theworld-premiere, Broadway-bound musical,Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, by the talented team ofDavid Yazbek, composer/lyricist of The FullMonty, and acclaimed writer Jeffrey Lane,with direction by our own multiple Tony

Award®-winning Jack O’Brien and choreography by JerryMitchell. Next door on the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, RichardSeer, winner of the 2003 San Diego Critics Circle “Craig Noel”Award, directs Steven Dietz’s fascinating new work, Fiction. We aretruly blessed with a host of talented individuals here this fall, allof whom have collaborated to make great theatre for you.

There’s still much more excitement to come this season,from our annual holiday production of Dr. Seuss’ How the GrinchStole Christmas!, to the Tony Award-winning Take Me Out, helmedby celebrated director Joe Mantello, to another fascinating world-premiere musical, Himself and Nora, based on the life James Joyce.We hope you will join us for more of this exceptional season.

Stephen Dietz, a master craftsmanof that remarkable social minuet soprevalent among our beleagueredspecies, and who so intrigued us withhis lovely Private Eyes in the Carter afew years back, has cobbled together a

remarkable play called Fiction, which is witty, brainy,provocative and heart-breaking at the same time. Fewwriters of contemporary values so mirror the society inwhich we, in particular, find ourselves as Dietz, and underRichard Seer’s probing direction, it is a pleasure to have hisvoice once more in our midst.

And speaking of “welcoming back,” the last time com-poser/lyricist David Yazbek entertained us, it was with alittle blue-collar confection called The Full Monty, and we allknow what happened to that particular exercise! Well, he’sback, now with his collaborator, librettist Jeffrey Lane, andthis time they have forsaken frigid Buffalo for the elegantRiviera, where beautiful women can become the all-too-willing and delighted prey of hilarious Scoundrels in thenew musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. And back withMessrs. Yazbek and Lane, among many, are my favoritechoreographer Jerry Mitchell, musical director TedSperling, the great David Rockwell, scenic designer ofHairspray, and costumer Gregg Barnes, whose creations forLucky Duck caused a minor sensation this past summer.And I’m not even yet cataloguing a cast with the likes ofJohn Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Renee Scott,Joanna Gleason, and Gregory Jbara... So naturally, I want-ed to direct it! Wouldn’t you?

It’s a thrill to have a new American play in the Carter.And a thrill to have a new American musical in the Globe.What an autumn! We hope you are as excited as we are!

Summer in Beaumont sur Mer, a fashionable resorton the French Riviera. Another season is just beginningfor Lawrence Jameson, a British con artist posing as thedeposed prince of a fictional country. Targeting wealthyfemale tourists who are all too happy to finance his mis-sion to regain his throne, Lawrence's perfect set-up isthreatened when a clever young American grifter known as“The Jackal" is rumored to be encroaching on his territory.

Returning from a banking trip to Switzerland,Lawrence watches as Freddy Benson tries to scam awoman on the train with pathetic tales of his grandmotherneeding an operation. Feeling this new pretender to thethrone is no match for him, Lawrence quickly gets rid ofthe competition. Freddy, however, is on to Lawrence aswell, follows him to his chateau and threatens to exposehis charade unless Lawrence teaches him everything heknows. The master and student soon prove to be an effective team when Freddy poses as the Prince's youngerbrother Ruprecht.

Unfortunately the two soon realize that there's notroom enough for both of them to work this town and setup a bet — whoever can swindle $50,000 from a proposed female target will stay on as the reigning princeof Beaumont sur Mer, while the other must move on.When Christine Colgate, a young heiress known as theAmerican Soap Queen, arrives for her first taste of theRiviera, the two have found their mark. What follows are aseries of schemes, masquerades and double-crosses inwhich nothing may ever be exactly what it seems.

I hope you are as delighted as I am with all of the wonderful productions The Old Globe has presented in2004. From Arthur Miller’s Resurrection Blues to Stephen Wadsworth’s elegant adaptation of Moliere’s Don Juanto the delightful Lucky Duck, it has definitely been a banner year at the Globe. Now after a marvelous summercelebrating The Old Globe’s return to a three-play Shakespeare repertory, we turn to Jack O’Brien’s latest mega-musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring John Lithgow, and many of Broadway’s finest, including Norbert LeoButz, Sherie Rene Scott and Joanna Gleason. Given the excitement of this Broadway-bound production, wescheduled our annual Globe Gala to celebrate the production’s world premiere.

Four years ago, many of usmet in this room and began aproject called The Full Monty,

and we had a wonderful time,primarily because of the amazing

working stability that has evolved inthis theatre over the last 25 years. Here we

are four years later, surrounded by an extraordi-narily gifted and loving staff. We're going to dive in,

and we have a lot of things to talk about today, not theleast of which is what this show is and what it's

about to be.

This is a musical about conning. There's something affectionate to me about the idea of a con. It has to do with wit and

elegance and ping-pong balls up in the air making you laugh. When peopleget taken in situations like this we usually think of it as mea culpa. “I should haveseen it coming. But I didn't.” The affectionate part of it is that it's a little bit of alaugh on us. If I can slip one over on you and no one's any the wiser and I get alittle richer, it's not a big deal. It's not like murder. It's not like mayhem. It's not

like evil…I'm not approving of cons. I just happen to be one.

So when we started to find a vocabulary in the scenic and costume designsfor this show, it had to be something beautiful. This is the Riviera. These

people are rich. Very rich. And part of the fun of going to a casino or anything like it, where chance is rampant, is the possibility that you are

existing in a world that could tip your way. And if you've ever been inthose places, even though people look beautiful, it doesn't seem to be

about sex or hunting. It's about Lady Luck. So if you're gambling,you're an accomplice. You know. They tell you. They tell you coming in.

They tell you going out what the odds are. But it is fascinating.Visually, orally, character-wise, people pretending to be

other people … So we came up with the beginningof what this world is, which is azure blue and

really enticing. It's all beautiful.It's all magic. It's all a con.

John Lithgow(Lawrence Jameson)

John Lithgow was bornto a theatrical family inRochester, New York,and grew up in Ohio,where his father pro-duced Shakespeare fes-tivals throughout thestate. At the age of six,Mr. Lithgow made his

stage debut in a production of Henry VI, Part 3.After graduating from Harvard, he won aFulbright Scholarship and used the opportu-nity to study at the London Academy of Musicand Dramatic Art. In 1973, he settled in NewYork, where his debut performance in DavidStorey’s The Changing Room won him his firstTony Award®. Since then he has appeared onBroadway 18 times in a wide variety of plays,including My Fat Friend, Trelawny of the “Wells,”Comedians, Anna Christie, Spokesong , Once in aLifetime, Bedroom Farce, Beyond Therapy, and lastseason’s Retreat from Moscow with EileenAtkins. Most recently he appeared oppositeSigourney Weaver in A.R. Gurney’s Mrs.Farnsworth at Tribeca’s Flea Theatre. Mr.Lithgow first achieved national attentionwhen his portrayal of Roberta Muldoon in TheWorld According to Garp was nominated for a1982 Academy Award. Since then he has con-tinued to win popular and critical acclaim forhis work in film, on television, and on stage,garnering numerous awards, including a sec-ond Tony for the musical Sweet Smell of Success,three Drama Desk Awards, Tony nominationsfor Requiem for a Heavyweight and M. Butterfly,ten Emmy nominations, four Emmy Awards(three of them for NBC’s 3rd Rock from the Sun)and a Golden Globe. His films include Terms ofEndearment (a second Oscar nomination),Twilight Zone: The Movie, Harry and theHendersons, Footloose, Cliffhanger, Shrek, A CivilAction, the forthcoming Kinsey, and manymore. In the spring, Mr.Lithgow published his first book for parents,A Lithgow Palooza: 101 Ways to Entertain andInspire Your Kids, which has won the prestigiousParent’s Choice Silver Honor Award. Finally,he recently wrote the narration forChristopher Wheeldon’s new ballet, Carnival ofthe Animals, for the New York City Ballet. Louis G. SpistoExecutive DirectorLouis G. Spisto was appointed ExecutiveDirector of The Old Globe in October 2002.He has over 20 years experience managingsome of this country’s leading arts organiza-tions, where his track record for fiscal as well asartistic leadership has been highly praised. He returns to the Southern California arts community from his most recent position asExecutive Director of American Ballet Theatrein New York City. While there, he increased ticket income and annual contributions for theorganization by nearly 20 percent. He alsotripled the Ballet’s touring weeks and theresources devoted to education and trainingprograms. Prior to his position at the ABT, he served as the President of the DetroitSymphony Orchestra, where he providedfundraising leadership and creative direction forthe orchestra’s $60 million renovation project,and helped dramatically increase ticket saleswhile initiating several new series for theorchestra. Spisto established a reputation as asuperb arts executive here in California, wherehe spent over ten years as the ExecutiveDirector of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra inOrange County. During his tenure there, hetripled the orchestra’s annual budget all whileeliminating a prior deficit and successfully completing the orchestra’s first endowmentcampaign. In addition, he established a series of innovative recording projects with SonyClassical and oversaw many nationally-recog-nized commissioning projects. A strong advocate of arts education, he built one of thelargest and most respected music training andoutreach efforts. During his career, Spisto hasalso served as Director of Marketing for thePittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Directorof Operations and Development for thePerforming Arts Center at UC Berkeley. He holds a Masters degree from the Universityof Wisconsin in Arts Administration and aBachelors of Business Administration from theUniversity of Notre Dame, and spent manyyears acting, directing and producing plays andmusicals throughout his student days, as well asin professional summer theater.

Craig NoelArtistic DirectorCraig Noel was first appointed director in 1939,directing 15 productions prior to World War II.Since then he has directed more than 220 playsof all styles and periods, and produced more that365 (over 40 of which were directed by WilliamRoesch from 1961 through 1976). His vision forThe Old Globe during the past 65 years hasresulted in the establishment of the ShakespeareFestival in the late ‘40s, the expansion to twotheaters in the ‘50s, Globe Educational Tours inthe ‘70s and Teatro Meta in the ‘80s. His recentdirectorial assignments include The Pavilion, Overthe River and Through the Woods, Scotland Road,Springtime for Henry, Travels with My Aunt, Voir Dire,Mister Roberts, Time of My Life, Wonderful Tennessee,Mr. A’s Amazing Maze Plays, The King of the KosherGrocers, Morning’s at Seven, The White Rose, ShirleyValentine, And a Nightingale Sang, The School forScandal, The Road to Mecca, Love’s Labour’s Lost, TheBoiler Room, The Night of the Iguana, and IntimateExchanges. ELSEWHERE: During the 1940sNoel served as dialogue director for 20thCentury Fox Studios and was the former directorof the Ernie Pyle Theatre, Tokyo. Described byVariety as the eminence grise of San Diego theatre,Noel is one of the few San Diegans to have anentire year (1987) proclaimed in his honor, andto be named one of San Diego’s “LivingTreasures.” Additional honors include theGovernor’s Award for the Arts; inclusion in The San Diego Union’s list of 25 persons whoshaped San Diego; 1985 Outstanding Alumnusof the Year; San Diego Press Club HeadlinerAward; a combined tribute from the Public ArtsAdvisory Council and San Diego County Boardof Supervisors (1984); Shiley Award for LifetimeAchievement (1999 Patté), Member, College ofFellows of the American Theatre.
