Presentation goals

• We hope to increase the already abundant compassion of educators.

• To allow all educators in attendance to walk away with a better understanding and the latest knowledge of ideas we consider to be common classroom accommodations for all students with disabilities.

• To give the audience an opportunity to participate in a hands on activity demonstrating disabilities.

Classroom accommodations

• Dyslexia- books on tape, e-reader, dictate written assignments, speech to text dictation software, extra time on tests, dictate answers orally, one step directions, visual aides, do not mark off for spelling errors

• Autism- consistency, use visual aides as much as possible, PECS, social skill training, help with behavior preventions plans, hone organizational skills

• Speech/Language Impairment- allow extra time to speak, AAC (if needed), provide copy of notes, study partners, grade modifications, peer tutoring, give assignments orally and verbally

Classroom accommodations

• Vision impairment- preferential seating, larger print, magnifying glasses, minimal copying, provide notes, record lectures, check accommodations for outings before scheduling them

• ADD/ADHD- study buddy, self-monitoring cues, pair written and oral instructions, allow student to stand when appropriate, positive attitude in class, send positive notes home, teach organizational skills

Classroom accommodations

• Orthopedic Impairment- special seating as needed, instructions with focus on fine and gross motor skills, use suitable AAC devices

• TBI- preferential seating, small groups, provide written schedule, class buddy, repetition, cueing system, shorten assignments, organization skills, shorten tests

• ED/EBD- goals, seating arrangements to encourage positive social interactions, clear rules and expectations, cue words for inappropriate behavior, cool off area aka “time out room”

Classroom Accommodations

• Hearing Impairment- speak clearly, get students attention before speaking, eye contact, visual aides, important information in print, make sure student is wearing appropriate hearing devices, use captions when possible while watching videos, use ASL if needed

• ID- extended time or additional time, repetition, visual demonstrations, small group, oral response, teach life skills, work on social skills

Misnomers

• Special Education students are mostly students with intellectual disabilities.

• The need for SPED is not as great as other teaching subjects.

• We have to lower our expectations of students with disabilities.

• ALL Learning disabilities are environmental.

• Learning disabilities denote lack of intelligence

• You can’t do fun, challenging activities

• A person’s disability defines who they are as an individual.
