Disaster Risk Reduction :
Volcanoes
What is a Volcano?
• A volcano is a vent or an opening on Earth’s crust which transfers molten rock also known as magma and other pyroclastic materials from the depth to
the Earth’s surface.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF A
VOLCANO?
It can be bothBeneficial & Harmful
Effects
Beneficial Effects• Volcanoes have a good effect on the environment such as it
provides nutrients to its surrounding soil.• It helps the Earth cool off by releasing/removing heat from
its interior.• Volcanoes can also create Islands and add to the continents.• Some of the emitted materials can be used as building
materials and other things that are useful to humans such as pumice and volcanic ashes that are mostly in hand soaps and household cleaners.
• Creates economic mineral resources.
Harmful Effects
• Volcanoes destroy properties, habitats, homes, cities, towns and communities.
• Since the land surrounding the volcano is fertile and good for farming, a lot a crops get destroyed when it erupts.
• Due to its hotness, it can kill thousands of people and animals if not prepared and warned.
• Ashes and gases mix in the atmosphere which can harm our ozone layer as well as the health of the people.
VOLCANOES ARE REALLY HAZARDOUS ,SO IT IS BETTER
TO BE READY BEFOREHAND TO AVOID GREAT CASUALTIES AND
DAMAGES.
SO HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO BE DONE TO AVOID SUCH
PERIL:
BEFORE
Prepare Communication devices for updates such as
phones, radios and TVs.- Evacuate immediately if
authorities say so.-Follow rules and orders
from the officials. -Stay away from active
volcanoes.
Have an evacuation plan.- Decide a specific and accessible meeting place where you and your family will meet / can head to if there is an eruption and you have to evacuate your place.• - Have relevant contact
details that they can call in case of emergency.
Discuss with your family - Discuss with them about the disaster and make sure to let them be aware of such event
that may occur any time.-Discuss and agree a specific and safe place where all of
you will meet in case of evacuation.
- Discuss the things to prepare and also maybe plan
drills which your family could perform together .
Prepare an Emergency supply kit
- This includes : flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits, food & water supplies, raincoat, emergency blanket, masks,
goggles, necessary medications, fully-charged phone/s , important papers /
personal files and other stuffs needed and are very
handy.
DURINGKnow and Familiarize your
community’s / town’s warning system.
Listen to the authorities’ instructions.
Wear a mask and a goggle s to prevent any irritations and
breathing difficulties caused by the falling ashes and the
smog.
Get to a higher ground as fast as you can if you were not able
to evacuate your place.- If indoors, close all the windows and the doors.
-If outdoors, seek for shelter and avoid low-lying areas.
Protect yourself , especially your head, from pyroclastic. - Shield your self from the dangerous
rocks, debris, hails and any other things sent flying during eruption
from the volcano. Use your backpack or anything that is enough
or at least can protect your head .
Avoid exposure from poisonous gases.
- Volcanoes emit gases that are dangerous for us so don’t stay on low grounds and wear long
pants and sleeves.
AFTER
Remain indoors/ remain to where you are staying
unless the authorities tell you
that it’s okay to come out and is
already safe.
Stay away from areas with heavy ash fall. - Ashes still contains dangerous contents
which are not good for our respiratory system.-Driving will not be a
good idea because ashes will just clog on
your engines.
Remove the ashes from your rooftop and clean your
surroundings.-Ashes are very heavy and
can cause your roof to collapse ,so better remove it.
-Still, it can affect your respiratory system.
- Do not open your air conditioners and vent until
ashes has been cleared.
Receive medical care if needed. - Get a medical treatment if you have some injuries, burns,
and gas inhalations
That’s all, Thank you !I hope this served as a great help to you.
