Requirements for Completion 1 Champion from each level to State Fair

Kosciusko County 4-H Guide to ensure you have read ALL necessary requirements

and policies and procedures.

Create an exhibit that shows the public what you learned in shooting sports education this year. Title your exhibit with one of the following: archery, outdoor skills, muzzleloading, pistol, rifle, shotgun or shooting sports. You can use a subtitle, if you wish.

Important Notes: Firearms or ready to shoot bows are not allowed to be exhibited.

Unstrung bows are permissible. Live ammunition is not allowed to be exhibited (no powder or primer)

Any bladed object must be displayed in a locked, secured or sealeddisplay case. Displays involving firearms or bows may be exhibited as aphotographic display on a poster or in a notebook following grade levelguidelines.

First time participants must take the beginner class unless they have a Hunters Education Card. The beginner class consists of 2 meetings per discipline with safety instruction. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Those youth with a valid Indiana Hunter Education card may participate at another level provided they show basic proficiency in their discipline at a special test session prior to the beginning of the active program for that year.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Each participant in the Kosciusko County 4-H Shooting Sports Program is expected to complete each of the following within each program year of his/her involvement. Each participant is expected to complete a shooting sports record

sheet each year, and attach it in the green record book folder. Learn the rules of safe and responsible firearms and/or archery

equipment use. Projects involving firearms, bows, arrows or ammunition may be

exhibited as a photographic display on a poster or in a notebook following grade level guidelines.

Any project not meeting guideline requirements will receive aparticipation ribbon. No exceptions will be made.

Notebooks must include detailed information about how the projectwas completed with photographs documenting the work.Photographs are encouraged as they help the judges see theprogress and the finished product. The notebook must includeresearch, planning, costs, and an explanation of how the finalproject will be used.

Display boxes (shadow box) must be 18 x 24 inches, no more than 3inches deep, and displayed horizontally.

Handmade items must include information explaining how theproject was made and its intended use.

An explanation of what was done includes explaining what you did,your research, planning, costs, and how you will use the finishedproduct.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS BY LEVEL Additional specific requirements and guidelines are listed for the various levels of the project. Note that the requirements “include both activities and exhibits.” In addition, the exhibit category includes a variety of options.

LEVEL 1 – Grades 3-5 Completion Requirements Activities 1. Completion of all general requirements.2. Complete the basic safety and marksmanship program and/or learn

the safety rules in at least one discipline (archery, black powder,pistol, rifle or shotgun).

Exhibit: Prepare a poster (following general poster rules) showing what you learned this year. Acceptable themes include but are not limited to: a. Shooting safety,b. Wildlife management or natural historyc. Proper shooting technique in a disciplined. A shooting game you tried this year ore. Any subject pertaining to Outdoor Skills.

Additional Poster Exhibit Requirements Failure to follow these guidelines may result in a lower exhibit grade. 1. Poster board – All posters must be 22” x 28” unless otherwisespecified. Posters do not have to be white.2. Labels – 3 x 5.5” labels for posters will be supplied by the 4-Hoffice at project check-in to identify 4-H member, project, and level.This label will be attached to the lower right hand corner of the poster.Please adjust your display accordingly.3. Stiff backing – Any material that will keep the poster from bendingforward will work. Some examples are: foam core board, very stiffcardboard, plywood (this can make a poster very heavy); and Mason-ite (1/8” thick found to work well and could be used year after year.) Ifyou can find foam core board in the correct size it can take the placeof poster and backing.4. Plastic covering –Clear heavy plastic sleeves are available from theExtension Office for $.25 each. Do not use kitchen wrap.5. Citations are required for all posters as stated above.6. All poster projects must have the 4-H member’s name and clubprinted on the back of the poster. Your poster should be orientedhorizontally, like a dollar bill (see below).

General Project Rules 1. All general projects exhibits will be judged in advance of the Kos-ciusko County Community Fair. Each 4-H member should try to be present when his/her exhibit is judged. 2. All exhibits will be required to be in place at the time designated. Exhibits will be lowered one placing if not in place when the project judging begins. Participation ribbons shall be awarded when pro-jects are entered for judging after the project judge has left the judging site. 3. All entries must have been made following the 2018 fair or not exhibited before. 4. General project check-out will be on Sunday, July 14 from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM and on Monday, July 15 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM and 4:00 PM-6:00 PM. Exhibits may not be taken prior to release except through special written permission from the 4-H Extension Educator. Only projects picked up on time will receive ribbons. 5. All posters, notebooks, and display boards must include a refer-ence list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member’s exhibit. This ref-erence list should/might include web site links, people and profes-sionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as part of the display vis-ible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the man-ner in which references are listed. If a reference listing is not with a project when it is checked in, it will not be eligible for Grand Cham-pion or State Fair Exhibit. 6. **For personal safety concerns, notebooks exhibited should only contain name, county, grade, level and club, and no personally iden-tifiable information such as mailing address or phone number. 7. Contact the Extension Office for additional resources and activi-ties that are available for many projects. Indiana 4-H Project Manu-als are not required to be completed however may be an informa-tive resource for many projects and may be purchased at the Exten-sion Office. Exhibit: Choose option 1, 2 or 3 to complete as your exhibit. Exhibits must meet the size restrictions or be presented in a notebook. 1. Prepare a poster (following general poster rules) showing what you

learned this year. Acceptable topics include but are not limited to: a. Shooting safety, b. Wildlife management or natural history, c. Proper shooting technique in a discipline d. A shooting game you tried this year or e. Any subject pertaining to Outdoor Skills. 2. Exhibit a small project or model no larger than 18 x 18 x 36 inches.

You must include a notebook with detailed information about how the project was completed and documenting the work. Photographs are encouraged as they help the judges see the progress and the finished product. The notebook must include research, planning, costs, and an explanation of how the final project will be used.

a. If you choose to make a small project, it is recommended that it be displayed in a shadow box no bigger than 18 x 18 x 36 inches.

3. Display a notebook showing how a shooting sports item was made or a project completed.

4. LEVEL 3 – Grades 9-12

Completion Requirements Activities 1. Completion of all general requirements. 2. Make at least one functional item that will support your shooting,

hunting or wildlife activities. 3. Make a public presentation, club demonstration or organize a public

event related to shooting sports or one of its specific disciplines. Exhibit: Choose option 1, 2, or 3 to complete your exhibit. You may display a firearm or bow at the fair if it is handmade or

restored. It must be disassembled/unstrung in a locked shadow box. There must be a notebook with a photo log and detailed description of the steps taken to complete the project. It must include time and cost involved. You must notify a discipline instructor of your intent. The instructor will then inform the shooting sports committee who will make sure it conforms to the requirements. Only the notebook will advance to the state fair if you win champion at the county fair. 1. Display a notebook showing how a shooting sports item was made

or project completed. 2. Project or model any size. You must include a notebook with

detailed information about how the project was completed documenting the work. Photographs are encouraged as they help the judges see the progress and the finished product. The notebook must include research, planning, costs, and an explanation of how the final project will be used.

a. If you choose to make a small project, it is recommended that it be displayed in a shadow box. It shall be no larger than 18 x 24 inches, no more than 3 inches deep, and displayed horizontally.

3. Prepare an instructional poster. Acceptable themes include but are not limited to:

a. Shooting or hunter safety, b. Wildlife management or natural history c. Instruction in proper shooting techniques d. Instruction in a shooting game or a particular type of

hunting or wildlife observation. e. Motivation toward community action on conservation

issues. f. Career opportunities related to shooting sports or wildlife

related fields. g. Any subject pertaining to Outdoor Skills.

LEVEL – Independent Study: Grades 9-12 Exhibit: 1. Advanced topic – Learn all you can about an advanced shooting

sports topic and present it on a poster and/or in a notebook. Include a short manuscript, pictures, graphs, and list the works

cited to describe what you did and what you learned. Title your poster, “Advanced Shooting Sports- Independent Study.”

2. Mentoring – Exhibit a poster that shows how you mentored a younger 4-H member. Include your planning, the time you spent, the challenges and advantages of mentoring, and how the experience might be useful in your life. Photographs and other documentation are encouraged. Title your poster, “Advanced Shooting Sports – Mentor.”
