Dear Friends,
Rock On!With Alexander Ghindin, piano
Saturday, October 5, 2013 7:30 p.m.The majesty of the full forces of the symphony orchestra will shine in the spectacular opening of our 64th concert season.
We’ll begin with a bright and energetic kaleidoscope of orchestral sound in Thomas Svoboda’s Overture of the Season. Next, the greatest love theme ever written to the synopsis of the greatest love story ever told: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. Finally we’ll feature the extraordinary virtuosity of Russian superstar Alexander Ghindin performing the granddaddy of all piano concertos, Rachmaninoff’s 3rd, better known as “Rach 3.”

repertoireOverture of the Season ........................................Thomas SvobodaRomeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture ............Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyConcerto, Piano, no. 3, op. 30, D minor ........... Sergei Rachmaninoff
Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of
his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical
music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom that included a pronounced lyricism, expressive breadth, structural ingenuity, and
a tonal palette of rich, distinctive orchestral colors. The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff’s
compositional output. He made a point of using his own skills as a performer to explore fully the
expressive possibilities of the instrument. Even in his earliest works he revealed a sure grasp of idiomatic
piano writing and a striking gift for melody.

Alexander Ghindin has been unanimously acclaimed by critics and music lovers as one of the most talented and original pianists of the present day. At the age of 17, he became the youngest-ever laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and is quickly establishing himself as one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation. Since 2006, Ghindin has been Artistic Director of his own concert series at one of Russia’s most distinguished concert venues. He also tours successfully throughout Russia and abroad.
Holiday Magic

Saturday, February 8, 2014 7:30 p.m. For this, a more intimate experience awaits.
We’ll begin by featuring the strings of the WSO with the lyrical beauty
and exuberance of Antonin Dvorak’s Serenade for strings. Next Italian
guitarist Nando di Modugno takes the stage as we present Vivaldi’s
enchanting Concerto for Guitar. The regal and elegant touch of Mozart’s
“Haffner Symphony” follows, and we’ll conclude the program with the rhythms
and sounds of Cuba as Nando joins us once again to perform American
composer Michael Daugherty’s elegy for Cuba: Bay of Pigs.
Sublime!
Nando di modugno’s musical versatility and curiosity has led him to collaborate with musicians from different backgrounds, sharing diverse experiences in Italy and abroad. In addition to performing with orchestras, he has played with contemporary music ensembles including Dauni, the Phoenix and Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain. He has also participated in Oscar winning soundtrack recordings with Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) and Niccola Piovani (Life is Beautiful) and collaborated with Jazz musicians Pierre Favre, Jay Rodriguez, Fabrizio Bosso, Gabriele Mirabassi and Bobby McFerrin.
