The new year is a good time to take a personal inventory: to decide what you no longer need and to make sure you are giving the valuables you want to keep adequate protection.

When it comes to your fine jewelry, there are two things you need to consider: 1) ls it in good repair and well-stored? and 2) Are your valuable pieces adequately in­sured? An annual visit to your jeweler can set your mind at ease on these points.

A detailed appraisal only needs to be done once for each piece of your valuable jewelry. The appraisal may need updated values inserted every year or two at little or no charge. It's a good idea to bring your jewelry in once a year in any case so it can be checked for security. A loose clasp or insecure mounting could result in the loss of a gemstone or an entire piece of jewelry.

MEMO from our Club President

T HE holiday season is upon us. In the September issue of THE OLYMPIAN, as you will recall, I commented on the

increased activity in the Club dining rooms and that it would be wise to make early reservations for holiday parties. I am pleased to report that the response was very good. At this time almost all weekend dates at the country club during November and December are filled for private room parties. If you have not yet made your holiday arrangements, please give the Club a caJI now. If you cannot obtain a party reservation at the country club, why not consider the city club? Even though the main din­ing room is open for regular buffet on Thursday evenings only, we will open for a private party of sufficient size any evening of the week, in a genuine effort to accommodate your needs.

The first week of December the Christmas decorations will be installed at both clubhouses. As has always been the case in the past, it will be absolutely necessary that you make reservations well ahead of time for both regular evening dining in the main dining rooms and for special Club parties.

Our Club's fiscal year came to a close on September 30th. Although the final audit is not yet completed, I am able to report that we continue to enjoy a financially sound position.

For those who cannot attend our Club's Annual Meeting on November 6, 1985 and hear my State of the Club message, it will appear in the December OLYMPIAN.

Also at our Annual Meeting I will receive the report of the Nominating Committee, who, under the chairmanship of past president Herb Suhr, will present four candidates for the Board of Directors to serve for a term of three years. I'm sure that those individuals who are elected will find the next three years a fascinating and difficult but enjoyable experience.

Construction of the luxury hotel by Portman on the Club's land is moving forward slowly. Excavation is complete, and work will now commence on the foundation. It is hard to believe that work has been in progress for over one year. Open­ing is scheduled for Spring 1987.

Last month I announced that repair and remodeling work has started on the city clubhouse shower room. The project already has difficulties, in that more deterioration in the sup­port structure of the area has been discovered than was ex­pected. I will keep you posted on further developments and delays.

CLUB WATER POLO TEAM FAVORED TO WIN ITS FOURTH

T HE Olympic Club water polo team appears poised to garner its fourth

consecutive national championship in Orlando, Florida. Given its past suc­cess, the Olympic Club has been seeded ffrst, followed by Texas A&M, the New York Athletic Club, and Brown Uni­versity.

The team prepared itself by com­peting in a full summer season that in­cluded wins over USC, UC Irvine, and Frenso State, teams that are expected to compete in the NCAA champion­ship tournament this fall. The Olympic Club team also successfully defended its Hawaiian Open championship by defeating a tough Punahou team 5-2. In that tournament-the world's

largest club tournament, with 62 two­teams entering-Carlos Steffens was named Most Valuable Player, and Vince Vannelli and Jim Purcell also earned all-tourney honors.

These performances solidified The Olympic Club's position as the premier club team in the country and led to the selection of a number of players to compete at the national level. David Hendrickson was named to the U.S. National Team training squad, from which the U.S. National Team is chosen. Russell Hafferkamp was selected for the National Sports Fes­tival, where his "West" squad earned the gold medal. And David Post led the U.S. team to a second-place finish at

the Maccabiah games held in Israel this summer.

This full summer schedule should prepare the team not only to bring back its fourth consecutive national championship but also to defend the Corporate Cup from the New York Athletic Club. The Corporate Cup is a perpetual trophy established in 1980 to foster competition between the NYAC and the Olympic Club and is retained by the winner of these semi-annual matches. The NYAC is slated to meet the Olympic Club at the National Championships, but since the Cor­porate Cup has not left the Olympic Club since 1982, the team fully expects to bring it back for another year.

A NOTHER Championship Tournament came, and Vera Brown is the new

Club champion. There was a runner-up tie for second place between Ann Kings­bury and Barbara Azevedo. Low net in Championship Flight was won by Joan Passantino. The First flight was led by Lois McManus, followed by Trude Cushing and Lucille Feeney. Second­flight low-gross winner was Irene Wall, with Ernestine Campagnoli and Nancy Hoedt following. Congratulations to Vera and all the winners of their flights.

ROUGHWATER SWIMMERS DO WELL IN HAWAII

first place in its division in the annual Maui Channel Swim and fourth overall.

In an extremely close race, the Club's 25 + team placed second in its division to a strong team from Texas. Its members were Jim Griffith, Randy Williams, Fred Ferroggiaro, Bob Momsen, Joe Dietrich, and John Osterloh. The team of Ed King, Tim Reid, Bob Clevenger, Dennis Mahoney, Bill Ferdon, and Jim Harwood wound up in eleventh position.

Thirty-nine teams competed. The distance is approximately nine miles from the island of Lanai to Lahaina, Maui. Each member swims a 30-minute leg, followed by legs of ten minutes or less until the finish.

WINGED "0" runner Ted Rade­maker is making his mark at

home and abroad, achieving outstand­ing times in masters competition. This year Ted, a former Cal track star, com­peted in Los Gatos and Fresno, the na­tional meet in Indianapolis, and the 6th World Veterans Games held in Rome this year.

At the 1985 TAC National Masters Track & Field Championships he took first in the 100-Meter Hurdles at 16.05, a pending world record, in the 60-64 year age group. At Rome Rademaker won the third-place bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles. His best time in the 100-meter dash is an outstanding 13.01.

P AUL Asmuth, a 28-year-old Olym­pian, set a new men's record in

swimming the English Channel on August 29. His time was 8 hours, 12 minutes-a full 26 minutes faster than that of the previous record holder, Jon Anderson.

But it still wasn't the best mark ever. That honor belongs to Penny Dean of San Jose, a lady who swam the 21-mile distance in 7 hours, 40 minutes on an almost perfect day in 1978.

Asmuth's day started perfectly too, and for the first three hours the sea was calm. Then the wind came up, blowing into his face. It soon reached a 10- or 12-knot force, altering his course and slowing his speed. Even so, at three miles from shore, swimming now in the dark, he was ahead of the record. But the current turned against him and his bid for the fastest crossing failed.

He tried again on September l O and again ran into unfavorable currents as

he neared the French coast. His time was 8 hours, 32 minutes.

Asmuth, who joined the Olympic Club last year, has compiled an excep­tional record as a marathon swimmer. He has won the Professional Swim­ming Federation world championship six years in a row. On July 14 he won the 23-mile Around-the-Island Swim off Atlantic City in 8 hours, 23 minutes. A week later, he set a new record at the Magog Marathon in Canada, swimming 26 miles in 8 hours, 29 minutes.

There have been about 3,500 at­tempts to swim the English Channel over a great many years. Fewer than 300 have been successful. Asmuth's two crossings in less than two weeks are a remarkable achievement.

And of course there is always next year. If all goes well, he hopes to try again. With a good break in the weather, his goal is to swim the channel in less than seven hours.

CATCH THE 5:30 FITNESS TRAIN ON THE ROOF by Bud Napolio

EVERY Monday, Wednesday, and Fri­day at 5:30 on the roof of the city

club a group of men are taking part in a fitness program that includes several variations of sit-ups for a total of over 100 repetitions and four sets of push­ups that add up to 80. Besides these strengthening exercises, they're per­forming about ten minutes of aerobic exercise and stretching all their major muscle groups.

The class is designed to improve the three main components of fitness: strength, endurance, and flexibility. In addition to focusing on these areas, there's an emphasis on preventive care for the back and the cardiovascular system.

The class is perfect as a starting point for a complete fitness program or as an adjunct to an existing one.

Club Mourns the Death of Leroy S. Bellany

One of our great wrestlers, Leroy S. Bellany, died recently in San Jose. He was 85 and had been a member of The Olympic Club for 63 years.

He won a number of championships as a competitor, and he also coached many young Olympians in swimming, handball, and wrestling.

I T pays to know the course, if this year's three Men's Guest Days are

any guideline. Only one guest was a low-gross winner on the Lake and only one on the Ocean.

Lake low-gross honors went to John Abendroth (twice), Doug Nelson, and Sandy McCall, with Roger Dietz's guest Rich Schaer tying Phil Barry's 74 and winning first spot on the tie­breaker first handicap hole. On the Ocean, honors went to Mark Avelar, Tom Molumphy, Tom Culligan, Doug Nelson, and Paul S. Horwath, with T. J. DeSoto's guest Chon Gallegos the July low-gross winner.

In the low-net department, the guests fared better. On the Lake, out of 20 places each Guest Day, 6 went to guests in June, 12 in July, and 7 in August; on the Ocean, it was 12 in June, 9 in July, and 13 in August.

Now that the four new holes on the Ocean Course are in play, it seems timely to note that the holder of the course record for the new layout from the Blues and from the Whites is our four-time Club champion, Ray Pelle­grini. He shot 67 from the Blues in February and 64 from the Whites on the first day of the recent Best Ball.

While the Lake Course record from the Blues still belongs to Rives McBee and the 64 he shot in the first round of the 1955 U.S. Open, our 1985 Club Champion, John Abendroth, turned in a sparkling 62 from the Whites shortly after winning the Club championship.

Our Junior Golf Team finished second in Bay Cities League competi­tion with 7 wins and 2 losses, losing out to Santa Rosa Country Club Juniors, who had 8 wins and 1 tie.

The Seniors' Golf Association, with a membership of almost one-third of our golfing members, has had another active year. They're capping it by traveling to Maui for another meeting with the Wailea Seniors in early November, returning in time for a few days' rest before taking to the dance floor at their annual dinner dance.

Two Seniors-Jim McManus and Bill Keays-were the first to use the beau­tiful new driving range. Four Seniors­lg Passantino, Bill Giles, Frank Giam­bra, and Doug Merrick-represented Olympic in the annual NCGA Bay Area Zone Four-Man Best Ball Champion­ship at Spyglass.
