First opened in 1927, Arlington International has been called “America’s most beautiful

racetrack.” And it’s easy to see why. The immaculate grounds are lushly landscaped with manicured lawns, flower displays and stands of trees. The track’s infield is graced with majestic weeping willows and a large, pristine blue pond.

An impressive, six-story grandstand overlooks the famed one-mile and one-eighth oval track, which can seat 50,000 cheering fans. Tickets are very affordable. And if you buy your tickets in advance, you’ll also enjoy discounts.

If you like your horses close up, stroll to the paddock area where the steeds are walked just before each race. By the way, the extensive stables on the backstretch can shelter over 2,000 horses.

Not sure how to bet? Take a free ‘Betting 101’ class before the first race and learn the basics of wagering.

One of the choices you’ll make is where to sit. Lawn seating and benches are free. The options go up from there: Standard Box seating, Executive Boxes, and Luxe Boxes. Where you sit (and dine) determines

how you’ll dress. Casual clothes are fine for the Pavilion, while fancy dress is required at the elegant Governor’s Room.

Food at Arlington International is exceptional, and there are plenty of options: from burgers, BBQ, carved meats and more at the first-floor food court, to the refined pub fare of the Cowboy Grill, to the elegant dining experience of The Million Room.

You can also bring in your own food and non-alcoholic beverages. Smaller bags and coolers enter free. Larger ones require a cooler pass. Be sure to reserve a picnic table for your family or group, and enjoy the day!

The highlight of the season is the world-famous Arlington Million (America’s first ever million-dollar Thoroughbred race) in early August. It’s an international turf showcase of champion racehorses. The fashions and pageantry are sights to behold. Be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time.

Horse racing isn’t the only pastime that draws visitors. Arlington

International is also a destination for the entire family. You’ll find plenty of exciting events for every age. On the last Sunday of every month, Arlington International pulls out all the stops with a themed Family Day, featuring concerts, roving magicians, crafts, face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, and pint-sized amusement rides.

Adults can rock out at one of the lively Party in the Park After Dark bashes, featuring live music, games, and plenty to eat and drink.

Sample the enticing fare of the Food Truck Festival. Hoist a glass at Septemberfest. Enjoy family movie nights and lots more.

Arlington International is easy to get to. There’s plenty of parking. And Metra trains from Chicago stop right at the front gates.

Arlington International is a destination for the entire family. You’ll find plenty

of exciting events for every age.

ARLINGTON INTERNATIONAL AMERICA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL HORSE RACING TRACK

It’s off to the races at Arlington International Racecourse, exquisite home of Thoroughbred racing...and family fun. If you’ve never experienced the out-and-out excitement of this horseracing jewel, now’s the time. There’s no better place to be on a sunny afternoon. Take in the festive atmosphere. Admire the jockeys in their colorful silks atop sleek Thoroughbreds. Place a bet. Then listen to the thundering hooves and the roar of the crowd as the horses surge to the finish line. The racing season runs from early May to September, and there are 71 racing days to choose from.

RACECOURSE

Born six years before the racetrack originally opened in 1927, owner Richard “Mr. D” Duchossois has been the charismatic guiding force at Arlington for over 35 years. He purchased the track, which had seen better days, in 1984, only to see it burn down the following year. Rebuilding the racetrack at an estimated $200 million (almost $500 million today), Duchossois rescued Arlington International and remade it into America’s most elegant and exciting destination for Thoroughbred racing. By the way, his namesake sports bar Mr. D’s is a great place to watch the races.

like Kake and Kitsune. And the intensely flavored bowls of ramen are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Want to shift culinary gears? Order from a Chinese menu. Or try some Korean street food, like Bibimbap – a savory bowl crowded with rice, sautéed vegetables, beef short ribs and fried egg. Save room for dessert. There’s red bean cake, curry cake, green tea ice cream, and a mango black pearl smoothie the kids will love. Or dare to be different with a slice of decadent French mille crepe, whose 20 thin layers are each separated by pastry cream.

Another tasty way to explore Japan’s vibrant food culture at Mitsuwa is to attend one of the “gourmet fairs,” celebrating the unique regional foods of Japan – from the sweet hairy crab of Hokkaido to the celebrated fried chicken wings of Nagoya.

Be sure to visit some of the other shops near the food court. The Japan-based Kinokuniya bookstore has colorful displays of Japanese books, magazines and gifts. There’s a kids section with an impressive Pokémon collection. And check out the fantastic origami kits that allow you to build everything from paper pirate ships to

boa constrictors. Searching for the perfect chopstick rests? You’ll find them at the housewares shop, along with an amazing selection of plates, bowls and kitchenware. There’s also a Shiseido makeup boutique, a video store with hard-to-find Japanese titles and a Japanese hair salon.

MITSUWA MARKETPLACE

It’s the perfect adventure for foodies, families and fans of Japanese culture. Start with a

visit to Mitsuwa’s supermarket. Stroll down the bustling aisles as Japanese pop songs play overhead, and you might feel you’re in Tokyo or Osaka. Watch as skilled workers behind the fish counter carve precise strips of glistening yellowtail and mackerel for sashimi. Seafood is central to Japanese cuisine, and Mitsuwa stocks a remarkable assortment – much of it flown in fresh from Japan.

Stop by the meat department with its artisanal pork, chicken and beef offerings, and you’ll find one of Japan’s culinary gems, rarely found at retail – the richly marbled, meltingly tender Wagyu beef.

The Japanese emphasis on eating foods at the peak of their seasonal freshness means there will be a constantly rotating assortment of fresh-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables in Mitsuwa’s colorful produce section, including exotics like wintry yuzu citrus, spring’s Sakura cherry blossoms and summery Okayama peaches.

Ready to delve into the world of saké? Mitsuwa’s cozy liquor store features 150 labels of this fragrant rice wine. You’ll also find an impressive selection of Japanese beers for your fridge or picnic cooler.

Mitsuwa is more than an extraordinary supermarket. Many visitors come just to dine at its famed food court, where 15 shops and stands serve up some of Chicagoland’s best Japanese, Korean and Chinese dishes.

Treat yourself to a tray of fresh sushi or a traditional bento box lunch of broiled eel. The tempura here is outstanding, with fresh seafood, vegetables, and meats enrobed in a crisp, greaseless batter. Springy udon noodles, made fresh every day, accompany a variety of soups,

BON ODORI FESTIVAL A thundering and dazzlingly choreographed Taiko drum performance is a highlight of the annual Japanese summer festival in mid-August hosted by Mitsuwa. Dine on Japanese delicacies. Enjoy dance performances, karate demonstrations, games and more.

Get ready to immerse yourself in the exhilarating aromas, sights and flavors of Japan. Welcome to Mitsuwa Marketplace – the Midwest’s largest Japanese market. With its vast selection of high-quality foods and beverages, food court, specialty shops and cultural events, it’s easy to see why Mitsuwa draws people from across Illinois and neighboring states.
