The Water Cycle

• Water goes around in the water cycle: water vapour gets together to form clouds that drop as rain, snow, hail or sleet. This water fills oceans, caps, glaciers or runs under-ground.

• Plants transpire water from their leaves. Sunlight evapo-rates water, turning it into gaseous water vapour.

• The droplets of water vapour form clouds once again!

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are mostly made of gas, and are so large that they are known as the “gas giants.”

The planets nearest the Sun are known as “terrestrial planets.” They all have solid surfaces, and Earth is the only one of the four to have liquid oceans, though it is thought that Mars may have had oceans in the past as well.

Our solar system is made up of all these planets, as well as comets, asteroids, minor planets, dust, and gas.Now let’s compare the relative sizes of the plants and our Sun. We will divide the planets into two groups:

Earthquakes

The Earth is still very hot today; the heat in the layers of molten rock beneath the Earth’s surface causes the plates of the Earth’s crust to slide. These movements cause volcanoes and earthquakes.

The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of gases called the atmosphere, which contains oxygen and other gases that living things need to survive. It also acts as a shield against harmful ultra-violet rays from our Sun.

Relative SizeThe Earth is a part of our Solar System, which is made up of all these planets, as well as comets, asteroids, minor planets, dust, and gas.Now let’s compare the relative sizes of the plants. We will divide the planets into two groups:Terrestrial PlanetsThe planets nearest the Sun are known as “terrestrial planets.” They all have solid surfaces, and Earth is the only one of the four to have liquid oceans, though it is thought that Mars may have had oceans in the past as well. Rocks, Minerals & CrystalsThe rock that makes up the surface of the Earth is constantly changing. Overground it is affected by weather conditions and water, while beneath it is melted by heat from the Earth’s mantle and squeezed by high pressures from deep within our planet.

• There are three types of Volcano - Shield Volcanoes, Stratovolcanoes and Cinder Cone Volcanoes. Volcanoes can be: active, dormant or extinct.

• There are on average 20,000 earth-quakes recorded every year (about 50 a day) around the world. There are, however, millions of earthquakes esti-mated to occur every year that are too weak to be recorded.

• Hurricanes are large, spiralling tropical storms that can pack wind speeds of over 160 mph and unleash more than 2.4 trillion gallons of rain a day.

Plate tectonics are responsible for many of the Earth’s most interesting features.
