Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast. An area steeped in history, it was named by John Oxley in 1818 after Governor Macquarie. Oxley recommended the area to Governor Macquarie as a convict penal settlement. In April 1821 three ships arrived with 60 convicts and 40 soldiers of the 48th Regiment to start the settlement. Port Macquarie remained a convict town until 1847 but in 1830 it was opened to free settlers. Evidence of our convict past remain including the convict built St Thomas Church, the Well of the Female Factory in Munster Street (map ref K8) and the Well of the 1840 gaol located within the HW Motel. In addition many headstones from this era can be found in the historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street (map ref J9).

Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park (entry through the historic cemetery, map ref J9) covering 52 hectares, the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park preserves an area of natural bushland with 3 kms of walking tracks, boardwalks, and a new 600 metre cycleway. Here visitors can wander and enjoy the beauty of the area and its eco-systems.

Settlement Point Reserve (map ref H3) located just five minutes drive from Port Macquarie Town Centre is a great spot to take in the Hastings River. Facilities include picnic tables, BBQs, a playground, lots of parking and a nearby cafe. You can even take the short ferry ride over to the North Shore from here. Dolphins are frequently spotted along the shore as they frolick in the shallows of the river. Be sure to look out for them!

Historic Roto House was built in 1891 and belonged to the Flynn family. In the early 1980s it was restored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and features furnishings and artefacts from the 19th Century. Pack a lunch and picnic in the pleasant surrounds of Macquarie Nature Reserve, or visit the nearby Koala Hospital. Open daily from 10am-4.30am subject to volunteer availability. Phone (02) 6588 5555 (map ref L10).

The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the worlds first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas. Operated by the Koala Preservation Society of Australia Inc., the hospital has a treatment room, six intensive care units, a 24 hour rescue and treatment operation and multiple recovery yards. A good time to visit is during feeding at 3pm. (map ref L10).

Mid North Coast Maritime Museum Originally built as Pilot Cottages in 1896, they now house a wonderful collection of maritime material including superbly built scale models of a variety of vessels, charts, maps, paintings and an extensive collection of historical maritime photos. William Street. Open 7 days 10am4pm. Phone 6583 1866 (map ref M8).

Port Macquarie Museum is an award winning museum featuring themed displays from the first settlers right through to today. Located in Port Macquaries CBD, it is one of the few surviving early commercial and residential buildings in Port Macquarie and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Open Mon-Sat 9.30am-4.30pm (minimal charges apply). 22 Clarence Street (map ref K8). Phone (02) 6583 1108.

The Historic Courthouse was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and built in 1869 by local builders Butler and Bourne costing 1,091 and 9 shillings. It served the community for 117 years and was restored in 1993. This National Trust of Australia (NSW) classified building is open Mon-Fri 10am-3.30pm, and Sat 10am-1pm. Corner of Clarence and Hay Streets (map ref K8).

St Thomas Anglican Church Australias fifth oldest church is still in use. Built by convict labour between 1824 and 1828 the walls are constructed of one metre thick hand-made brick. It features an 1857 barrel organ that plays 33 hymns the only one of its type in Australia. Open Mon-Fri 9.30am-12 noon, and 2pm-4pm (map ref K8).

  • 9Comboyne is a tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls. Here youll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this.

Ellenborough Falls is an amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst its only a 25km drive from Comboyne, the road is mostly unsealed so allow around 45 minutes for the drive. Dont let this put you off however as it is definitely worth the trip. They have 2 walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop.

Lorne and Kendall, whilst a part of tthe Camden Haven, also forms part of the Hinterland. Kendall The Poets Village - A quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendalls community

our regionCamden Haven is the collective name given for the communities scattered along the Camden Haven River including Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan at the mouth of the river, stretching to Kew, Kendall, Lorne and Comboyne further inland.

Small fishing villages bustling with cafes and shopping combined with local charm, the Camden Haven is a wonderful place for a day or a week. It is all about water activities and the lake and river provide plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating and walking along the foreshores. Enjoy the peace and quiet on this magnificent river or grab your fishing rod and throw a line in, youll certainly attract the attention of some quizzical pelicans!

North Brother Mountain overlooks Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan villages. At the summit (490 metres), in Dooragan National Park, is the North Brother Lookout (accessible via sealed roads), which is not to be missed offering a superb view over the coastline, the lakes and the mouth of the Camden Haven River. It is one of Australias most impressive coastal panoramas. The area is characterised by large stands of rainforest which is rich in native fauna and flora.Take a picnic as they have excellent facilities. Three walks of varying length and difficulty are available if you are feeling energetic. The mountain supports a wide range of vegetation communities, including some of the best examples of old growth blackbutt forest in NSW and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest that provide habitat for gliders, bats and koalas.

Dunbogan, just past Laurieton, is a little piece of paradise. Beautiful beaches and river fishing make it a unique location catering for everyone. This is home of Kattang Nature Reserve, which boasts the most magnificent views. Enjoy wildlife and native flowers on one of the two walking tracks (see page 17).

Pilots Beach is a fantastic beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. They also have excellent BBQ facilities and a playground area with showers to rinse off.

by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of The Man on the Headland written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the parks attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming.

The Camden Haven continues to the west, with Kew, Kendall, Lorne and beyond. In the rolling hills and quaint towns youll find arts, crafts and various local delicacies that this region has to offer.

The Greater Port Macquarie region offers you a choice of 15 beautiful beaches stretching from Port Macquarie through to Dunbogan. All our beaches are unique so whether you are looking for seclusion, a spot to picnic or a break to hone your surfing skills, one or more will fit the bill.

Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots.

For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell.

Further south, Cathie is part of Lighthouse Beach and is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach at Bonny Hills is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to north-east winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (With thanks to Port Macquarie Surf School for surfing information).

If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach all of which have a 4WD entrance. Please note a permit is required to drive on these approved 4WD beaches. Greater Port Macquarie is a haven for whale watchers. Every year between May and November approximately 16,000 humpback whales leave their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica and make their way northwards to tropical waters and their winter feeding and breeding grounds before making their return trip.

A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an up front and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment.

Get out on the Hastings River in Port Macquarie on one of two fantastic boats operated by The Cruise Terminal. Port Venture Cruises supply a number of different experiences including a historic river cruise or a fun boom net ride at twilight, or the must do lunch BBQ cruise. Their boat, the River Princess, is an all-weather spacious 15m catamaran with two levels providing a

variety of viewing aspects. Or go back in time and board the Chinese Junk which is an altogether different experience - she is a vintage authentic Chinese junk and an extremely comfortable boat. Be lulled on one of their two hour trips and enjoy either a yummy morning tea scenic cruise, a tasty fish & chip lunch cruise or a spectacular sunset cruise. Take in the sights of the picturesque river while listening to the informative commentary, and be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins which are spotted on most trips. With experienced friendly and knowledgeable staff, they are sure to make your river cruise a memorable occasion (see ad page 6).

Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures operates three cruise boats across a broad range of water activities, including a variety of short and long eco river cruises, seasonal whale watching from May to November, coastal reef fishing and fast fun RIB adventure rides along our pristine coastline. They have the only passenger vessels capable of navigating the shallow sections of the Hastings River system. Shorter cruises go to Limeburners Creek National Park, Pelican Island wetlands and canals. Longer cruises go west to Rawdon Island, Wauchope & beyond and north to the famous Ev-erglades via the magnificent waterways of the Hastings, Maria and Wilson rivers.. Their two riverboats are also ideal for private charter for parties (BYO), tour groups, and functions for all occasions. Stopovers can be arranged at a variety of waterfront restaurants and venues for lunches and dinners. Cruise Adventures is Ports long-est established and most experienced whale watching cruise boat operator, with over 10,000 trips experienced on quiet whale friendly boats. More than 7,000 whales were seen in the 2013 season with numerous close encounters with Majestic Humpback whales, the gentle giants of the sea.

coastal walksPutting your best foot forward - a definite must do activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easy-grade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.

Starting at Westport Park in town (page 52, map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours. Nearly 3kms runs along the coastal boundary of the beautiful Sea Acres National Park.

The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.

The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk.

For your convenience, Council and the NPWS have installed quality signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology. Maps are also featured to make it easy for locals and visitors to enjoy and use the walk.

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections::HVWSRUW3DUNWR7RZQ%HDFKNP7RZQ%HDFKWR)O\QQV%HDFKNP)O\QQV%HDFKWR6KHOO\%HDFKNP6KHOO\%HDFKWR7DFNLQJ3RLQW/LJKWKRXVHNPA few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:.HHSWRWKHWUDFNDQGNHHSDZD\IURPFOLIIHGJHV%HZDUHRIWUDIILFZKHQFORVHWRWKHURDG3OHDVHWDNHUXEELVKZLWK\RXRUXVHELQVSURYLGHG'RJVDUHQRWDOORZHGLQWKH6HD$FUHVVHFWLRQDQ\ZKHUH
