The app won’t download on my Android device. What are the minimum requirements for these devices? The Discovery Insure app works on smartphones running Android 4.3, that have an accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS, Wi-Fi and other required hardware sensors. Smartphones that do not have all this functionality or cannot meet all the requirements unfortunately could not be included.

Always make sure the latest operating software is installed on your smartphone.

What will it cost me?You can download the Discovery Insure app for free. You may need to pay for data charges when using the app as we need to upload your trip data to determine your driving score. This upload can be done through Wi-Fi or mobile data. You can manage these upload options in Settings. Mobile data usage (if selected), will be charged at normal provider rates. This includes downloads and any updates.

How often does the app send data? When recording of your trip stops, the app will try and send your trip data to us via your mobile data network. The app will continue to retry until you have mobile data coverage. You can change this setting, so rather than sending the data to us over your phone provider’s data network, the app will only do this when you’re next connected to Wi-Fi (go to Settings in the app).

What happens when I’ve downloaded the app but replace my smartphone? You will need to download the app on your new smartphone. When you open the app, you’ll be asked for your ID number. We will verify your account and reactivate your profile so you can use the app on your new smartphone. Expect a verification email with a PIN code to be sent to your registered email address.

Will I experience significant battery drain from using the app?The Discovery Insure app uses both GPS and Wi-Fi to detect vehicle location and movement. The app also uses battery-efficient methods to automatically determine the start of a trip and stops detailed monitoring after a trip ends. The app is aware of your battery life and it will not use the GPS while your phone is not moving nor will it start monitoring a drive if the battery is low. Although the app has been designed to use the phone’s sensors in a battery-efficient way, running it without a charger on long trips may drain the battery, so we recommend using a car charger in these instances. An average driver who drives about one hour per day and uses a typical smartphone may experience battery drain in the range of 15% to 20% over the day.

SAFETY FEATURES

What safety features are available with the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track?You have access to the following unique safety features with a smartphone-enabled DQ-Track.

ImpactAlert

Through ImpactAlert, DQ-Track can pick up if your vehicle has been in a severe accident. When it detects a severe G-force, it immediately sends us a notification. We’ll monitor your vehicle to determine if it’s stationary or if you continue driving normally. If your vehicle suddenly stops, we’ll try to call you on your cellphone to find out if you need assistance. If we can’t reach you, we’ll immediately send emergency assistance to the accident scene.

A severe impact on your car could damage the DQ-Track, preventing ImpactAlert from working. The impact could also damage your smartphone. So, in the event of an accident, you should always call Discovery 911 on 0860 999 911. By calling us immediately, you are assured of receiving correct care and assistance in the quickest manner possible.

DQ-Track safety features will work provided your DQ-Track is in working order and in an area with cellular network coverage. To make sure we can assist you in an emergency, your smartphone should have at least 15% battery power and the following settings should always be active: GPS and Location services, Bluetooth, mobile and Cellular data (even if you have selected to upload your trips via Wi-Fi only), and Background app refresh.

Weather warnings

Using weather data combined with DQ-Track location data, we can warn you of imminent bad weather. For example, we can warn you of a large hail storm, where it would be safer for your car to be parked under a roof and not driving on the roads.

Find my vehicles

With this feature, Planholders can locate all the vehicles insured on their Plan on their smartphone. The app will show the last location where the vehicle and smartphone were paired. If a family member is driving their car and their smartphone is paired with their vehicle, the Planholder can view the trip in real time.

Optional safety featureThe following safety feature is optional and, to activate it, you need to install the standalone DQ-Track. You’ll also need to pay a once-off activation fee of R150, irrespective of the number of cars for which you choose this option. An additional monthly fee of R50 per car per month will be applicable.

Stolen vehicle tracking and recovery

Nationwide stolen vehicle tracking and recovery that helps protect your car against theft. We give you peace of mind that your standalone DQ-Track is always in working condition. The standalone DQ-Track automatically performs a daily health check that lets us know the device is functioning properly. If any continuous problems or defects are identified, we will SMS you to contact us. We’ll then arrange a convenient time and place for you to have your standalone DQ-Track checked, fixed or reinstalled if necessary, as quickly as possible.

How do I activate and install my smartphone-enabled DQ-Track?If you live outside Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, you’ll need to install the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track yourself.

Step 1

Activate the device by inserting the pin we’ve provided into the button slot and holding it there for about 10 seconds until a red LED appears. The LED should stay on for at least 3 – 5 seconds before you release the pin from the button.

Step 2

The following needs to be completed within 10 minutes of activating the smartphone- enabled DQ-Track.

On an iPhone, go to the “Settings” screen. On an Android device, go to the “About” screen. Once there, tap the “Activate tags” option. The app will search for the device. The serial number on the device should appear on screen. Tap the OK button and return to the Dashboard.

If a different serial number is shown, return to the “Settings” screen for iPhone, or the “About” screen for Android and try again after a minute or two. If there are other tags nearby that are being activated, you may see multiple serial numbers on the list. This is fine as long as your tag’s serial number appears. If you still experience any issues with your installation, please call us on 0860 751 751 immediately.

Step 3

Decide where you would like to place the tag and clean the surface with the alcohol swab. Remove the double-sided tape from the back of the device and firmly place it in your chosen spot. You should place the device on the inside of the front windscreen where it will not obstruct your vision, for example behind the rear-view mirror. If you have a motorcycle, the device should be placed in the under-seat compartment, firmly attached to an area where it will not move around. The Discovery Insure emergency number should be visible, in case you need emergency assistance.

Your smartphone-enabled DQ-Track will become fully active within 10 minutes. To confirm the device has connected with your smartphone, open the Discovery Insure app and for iPhone, tap on “Account details” and then “Your cars” and for Android, go to the “About” screen and tap on “List tags”. You’ll see if your tag is connected with your smartphone and it’s status.

DRIVING

How does the Discovery Insure app measure my driving? The app uses your smartphone’s accelerometer and GPS to determine how well you drive. The way your motor vehicle accelerates, brakes, and corners, and, the speed it travels versus the speed limit, will be measured. Smartphone usage during a trip will also be monitored as well as night-time driving, when most bad accidents happen.

After each journey, your driving data will be sent to us, we’ll analyse it and give you feedback on your driving. We’ll also give you a driving score of up to 850.

You can see an overview of your trips in View my trips as well as a detailed Trip summary for each trip. This is where we’ll show you your harshest driving incidents. To help you improve your driving, check out our recommended Driving tips in the main menu.

I’ve noticed that the app sometimes doesn’t record a full trip. Why is that? The Discovery Insure app makes use of proprietary movement calculations that allows the app to automatically determine when the smartphone is in a vehicle and to start recording a trip. It also uses this same technology when the trip has ended.

As the calculations depend on movement being identified, it can sometimes take up to 5km or 5 minutes of driving time to determine if a trip has started (this is more the exception than the norm). Therefore you may sometimes notice missing parts of the trip, typically at the beginning plotted on the map or a missed trip if it was less than 5km or took less than 5 minutes of driving time.

If your trips are not recording you can force close the app, reboot the device, and restart the app.

Why does the app sometimes not record my driving data at all?You need to make sure the app is open and running on your smartphone. This is especially important for iOS devices as the app won’t record any trip data if it’s been force closed.

For Android devices, trips may not be detected automatically if the app, or the Google Play store application, have been updated. You’ll be required to disable the GPS and Wi-Fi, re-enable it and then restart the device.

The app may also not record trips if your battery percentage is below 10%.

What if I’m a passenger in my own car or someone else’s car, use the bus or the Gautrain? No trips should be recorded while you’re a passenger in someone else’s car - only your trips in the vehicle in which your tag is installed will be recorded. If you are a passenger in your own car, you can swipe to select the passenger option in View my trips when the trip is complete.

04

Page 11: Discovery Insure - Paul Venter Financial Advisors€¦ · to measure and encourage good driving, improve your driving knowledge and ... Galaxy Mega 2 Droid Mini Moto X HTC One (M8)

Where in the car is the best place for my smartphone when I’m driving? It’s best to place your smartphone in a stable position anywhere in the car – we don’t recommend placing it in the side pockets of the door or any place where it might slide around while driving.

If you are using a hands-free cradle then it needs to be secure and hold the phone in a fixed position so that it does not move around, otherwise the app may give inaccurate results.

With phone motion/activity, why is my trip shaded pink over a larger area than when I was actually using my phone? If there was phone motion/activity during your trip, we highlight an entire section of the road in pink so it’s easy to see. However, your trip scores only reflect the portion of the trip where true phone motion/activity was recorded (while the vehicle was in motion).

What happens if I use my smartphone with a hands-free kit? There will be no impact to your trip assessment or driving score if you use a hands-free kit or other Bluetooth connections. However, when we notice that your attention has moved to using your phone by texting, manual dialing or receiving calls while your car is moving, then your score will be impacted.

What if I don’t use or forget to switch on the app?The app detects when you’re travelling and automatically starts monitoring your trip. It has been defaulted to be switched on when you download the app. If we do not see any monitored driving, we’ll remind you to use the app when driving.

Do I need to do anything to the app when driving? No. You do not need to look at or touch our app while driving. Provided the app is running, we will take care of switching on and off monitoring automatically.

Will you report me for driving badly? The app is intended to help you improve your driving through providing you with details of your trips and driving improvement tips. Your driving data will not be released to any traffic authorities.

Can I use the app when I travel outside South Africa?Yes, your trips will be recorded if you have a tag installed in your vehicle.

How can I improve my driving? Here are some driving improvement tips:

Harsh acceleration

If you have an object (like a phone or tablet) and it slides backwards on the seat then you may be accelerating harshly. By accelerating harshly, you waste fuel and could put yourself in harm’s way without having sufficient time to react. If you’re feeling stressed, take a minute to breathe deeply and count to 10; you’ll feel better!

Harsh braking

If you have an object (like a phone or tablet) and it slides forward on the seat then you may be braking harshly. Braking should be anticipated, and gradual/gentle, giving you lots of time to react to situations ahead (like pedestrians or stopped cars). Give yourself plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you; the rule of thumb is three seconds.

DRIVING04

Page 12: Discovery Insure - Paul Venter Financial Advisors€¦ · to measure and encourage good driving, improve your driving knowledge and ... Galaxy Mega 2 Droid Mini Moto X HTC One (M8)

Harsh cornering

Cornering should be done in a fluid motion that doesn’t cause you to move too much – to the right or left – in your seat. You should approach a corner and achieve the appropriate turning speed before entering the corner. You don’t know what could be waiting around a corner – a child or animal could be walking across the road.

We also measure any lateral or swerving movement such as lane-changes or overtaking.

Speeding

The speed at which you travel should be appropriate to the area or road conditions, no faster than the posted speed limit. For instance, 60km/h in residential areas and 120km/h on the highway. Give yourself enough time to get to your destination to avoid the need to speed. Also, reduce your speed in wet weather so you don’t lose control of your car.

Distracted driving

According to research, drivers who use a cellphone while driving are eight times more likely to have a crash than those who don’t. Texting also reduces reaction times by 35%. So, put your phone away while driving and focus on the road!

Avoid driving at night

The likelihood of having a car accident at night is 10 times higher than during the day, due to decreased visibility, your ability to stay focused, and more impaired drivers on the road. Always reduce your speed and increase your following distance. You can use our DriveMe benefit to get home safely at discounted rates.

DRIVING04

SCORING

How do you score my driving? As soon as we have enough driving data, we’ll give you a Driver performance score. You can view your score on your Dashboard. You’ll get up to 100 points for acceleration, braking, cornering and cellphone use while driving. You get up to 150 points for distance travelled, night driving and driving over the speed limit.

You can view your individual driving trips in View my trips and see your star rating out of five for each trip. You’ll see more details about each trip in your Trip summary, including any harsh driving events, speeding and cellphone usage while driving. Severe harsh events will be indicated by an exclamation mark.

What is the Driver performance score (DPS)? Your DQ-Track monitors your driving in real time. How you drive determines your Driver performance score (DPS) at the end of each month. You earn DQ Points based on your Driver performance score.

How is my DPS determined? What we measure

We measure your acceleration, braking, cornering, night-time driving (between 23:00 and 4:30), distance, speed and cellphone use while driving.

How we measure it

Acceleration, braking and cornering: We look at the number of times you drive above the g-force limits for acceleration, braking and cornering. These limits are determined by analysing driving behaviour with accident data. Driving below the limits significantly reduces the risk of being involved in an accident, while driving above these limits increases the risk.

Speeding: We measure the time you drive more than 10% or 10km/h above the speed limit, depending on which DQ-Track you have.

Night-time driving: We consider the time that you drive at night (after 23:00 and before 4:30 in the morning).

Distance: We look at the total number of kilometres you drove over the past three months. The more time spent on the road, the higher the risk of being involved in an accident.

Cellphone use: We also track cellphone use while driving. We measure the time drivers avoid using cellphones while driving.

Over what time period do we measure the DPS? The DPS is based on an analysis of your driving behaviour over the past 90 days or three months. That means your DPS in December, for example, will be based on your driving behaviour from the beginning of October to the end of December. Doing this cancels out any effect of once-off negative driving behaviour that occurs out of necessity, for example harsh braking due to a pedestrian running across the road. If there were a number of these events that required harsh braking or acceleration in October, you will see the effect on your Driver performance score for three months.

If there were no events that affected your driving behaviour in November, December or January, your score for harsh acceleration will continue to improve each month. You will see the biggest improvement in your DPS at the end of January, because the driving behaviour in October will no longer be taken into account.

05

Page 14: Discovery Insure - Paul Venter Financial Advisors€¦ · to measure and encourage good driving, improve your driving knowledge and ... Galaxy Mega 2 Droid Mini Moto X HTC One (M8)

What do the star ratings mean? Each trip is scored out of a maximum of five stars to a minimum of one star. We consider four or five star trips to mean you drove more safely than average (good job!). Two to three stars means you drove at an average safety level, and one star means you drove at a higher risk level than the average driver (which increases your chances of a major accident).

Five-star trip

Four-star trip

Three-star trip

Two-star trip

One-star trip

How do you measure the g-force of my vehicle and set the limits for safe driving? We use sensor data collected from your DQ-Track to determine the forward, backward and sideways movements of the vehicle. When these forces get too high, it significantly increases the chance of an accident. Our data shows that when a vehicle frequently moves at high g-forces it is often related to overly aggressive driving behaviour or late reaction to the movement of other vehicles.

Both aggressive and inattentive driving behaviour significantly increase the frequency of accidents – it also lowers your chance of avoiding an accident that another driver may cause.

Do you set the g-force limits differently for motorcycles and cars? Yes, we use a separate set of limits for motorcycles to allow for the higher power to weight ratio of motorcycles.

I had one event where I had to drive outside the g-force limits (harsh braking, cornering, and acceleration). Does that mean I am a bad driver? No, it does not. But, our research shows the frequency of these events when driving can be a predictor of high-risk driving behaviour. Even drivers with the best DPS have to adjust their driving behaviour every once in a while for some unexpected occurrence. This is one of the reasons why we measure driving behaviour over a three-month period. It may be worthwhile to ask how that situation might have been avoided to continue to improve your driving behaviour.

I normally don’t drive at night. Recently I had a couple of late night trips and it affected my DPS for night-time driving. Can you tell me why? Driving at night is dangerous due to drowsy drivers, drunk drivers or other reckless behaviour. Driving at night significantly increases the chance of an accident – accident rates are ten times higher after 23:00. This, combined with the higher than average driving speed at night, means the chance of a fatality is also dramatically increased.

We recommend using one of our DriveMe partners (including Uber) instead of driving your own vehicle between 23:00 and 4:30.

SCORING05

Page 15: Discovery Insure - Paul Venter Financial Advisors€¦ · to measure and encourage good driving, improve your driving knowledge and ... Galaxy Mega 2 Droid Mini Moto X HTC One (M8)

I am a primary driver for multiple vehicles on my Plan. How does this affect my DPS? Each vehicle (with a DQ-Track) of which you are the primary driver is scored separately, using your driving behaviour data for the past three months. We take the score for each vehicle and work out the average to give you your total DPS for all the vehicles you drive. For example, if you are the primary driver of two vehicles, the average score between the two vehicles will give you your total score.

It will be the same for those who have both a motorcycle and car with a DQ-Track. We will work out the average score for any vehicles for which you are the primary driver. If one of your vehicles (as a primary driver) does not have a DQ-Track, you’ll get a DPS of zero for the month for that vehicle, and we will still work out the average of this score and the score for other cars.

The driving Dashboard will show your score for all your tag connected vehicles, while the Vitalitydrive dashboard will show your score for all vehicles.

The score on the driving Dashboard is updated in real time, while the score on the Vitalitydrive dashboard updates daily.

Not having a DQ-Track in any of your other vehicles, can reduce your DPS and the DQ Points you earn. You can avoid this by installing a smartphone-enabled DQ-Track in all your vehicles.

I received 0 DQ Points this month. Can you tell me why that happened? You will not earn any DQ Points if you have missed more than one appointment for installation or repairs. By missing these appointments, we cannot measure your driving behaviour to give you a Driver performance score (DPS). Without the DPS, you do not earn DQ Points. We base your points for the month on your DPS.

Please visit the Discovery website at www.discovery.co.za to make a new appointment.

If you have an Essential Plan and you haven’t made an appointment for installation of a DQ-Track within 30 days of activating your Plan, your DQ Points will stay at 0 until you’ve made the appointment.

I just bought a new car, how will this affect my DPS? We will carry your latest DPS forward and use that until we install your DQ-Track in your new car and we’ve collected sufficient data. Let’s say your DPS was 500 in June and you got your new car in July. We will award you 500 DQ Points each month from July until your new device has been installed and has collected sufficient data for your DPS (usually two weeks).

If you are replacing one vehicle and you are the primary driver of more than one car, we use your latest DPS score for the new vehicle only (as explained above) and average that with the score for other vehicles.

Do you give any leeway if I’m driving above the speed limit? Yes, we give you a leeway of 10km per hour above the speed limit.

I tend to drive long distances because of my work and family responsibilities. How does that affect my score? You earn up to 150 DQ Points based on your total mileage, and 700 DQ Points for other categories such as speeding and car control. If you do drive long distances, then it’s likely that you won’t earn many DQ Points in this category. However, you can still get a high score in other categories and do various other activities to earn points and reach an Advanced Vitalitydrive status to maximise your rewards.

SCORING05

Page 16: Discovery Insure - Paul Venter Financial Advisors€¦ · to measure and encourage good driving, improve your driving knowledge and ... Galaxy Mega 2 Droid Mini Moto X HTC One (M8)

Will I be penalised for trips recorded without my cellphoneor if any of my settings aren’t activated? The amount of time your motor vehicle is driven with the app running, cellphone switched on and the required app settings activated is taken into account when calculating your score. To make sure your score is not affected, it’s important to ensure that all the required settings are active at all times, that your cellphone is switched on and the app is running. This is also important to ensure that safety features like ImpactAlert can work, if required.

If you’re a passenger in your own vehicle, you can indicate that you were a passenger by sliding your finger across the trip in View my trips and tapping the Passenger option.

I’m not sure my DPS is an accurate reflection of my driving behaviour. What data are you using to validate that a high DPS means I’m a better driver, and that a low DPS means I’m a more risky driver? Since Discovery Insure launched in 2011 we have been committed to making South African roads safer for everyone – part of that commitment is to ensure that we use a scientific and accurate approach to give our customers feedback about how they drive. We also reward them for making changes that reduce the risk not only for themselves but for all South Africans.

The claims that we pay out on behalf of our customers are matched to the driving behaviour data and the relationship we see between driver behaviour and claiming is significant. For example, we’ve seen drivers with the highest DPS show a 60% risk reduction compared with drivers with the lowest DPS. This corresponds with a massive reduction in the fatality rate, which if continued, will bring South African road safety in line with safer driving countries and improve the quality of life for all.

What if I disagree with my driving score or feedback? Most of us think we’re good drivers overall. So, getting a driving score or some feedback saying you’re not so good isn’t always easy to take in. Our view of whether we think you’re a good driver is based on millions of kilometres of monitored driving data. This data has been tested extensively so we’re confident that it’s representative and accurate. However, if after reflecting on how you’ve been driving, you disagree, please let us know.

I just activated my Plan with Discovery Insure. What DQ Points will I earn from now until my device is installed? You will automatically earn 400 DQ Points each month until your device is installed and starts measuring your driving behaviour. Your Vitalitydrive dashboard will show the 400 DQ Points each month, and other DQ Points you’ve earned.

I just had a DQ-Track installed in my vehicle. How long will it take for me to have a DPS? It generally takes between a week and two weeks before we have sufficient data to calculate your DPS. Until then, you automatically have a default DPS score which will give you 400 DQ Points a month.

What do the colours on the Vitalitydrive dashboard represent?

Your Vitalitydrive dashboard shows the total DQ Points you’ve earned each month and your Vitalitydrive status. It also shows your score for the past six months so you can track your driving behaviour and improvement over time. The colours in the driving behaviour section are: green for better driving behaviour, which reduces your chance of an accident; blue for average driving behaviour, and red for poor driving behaviour, which increases your risk of an accident.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

How do I add my family and friends to compete with me on my Leaderboard?Simply click on Add friends in your main menu and use the methods available to invite your friends and family, provided they are Discovery Insure clients and have installed the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track. You can invite them through your phone book, provided they are listed with email addresses. They’ll be listed as Contacts with the app. You’re able to invite your friends by SMS too. You can also invite them by typing their email address manually after clicking on the icon in the top right corner of the Add friends screen. You can also invite them through Facebook. You’ll see the status of your invites in the Sent screen. You’ll find invites that have been sent to you in your Inbox.

How will I know when I’ve received friend invitations? The app will notify you when you receive new friend invitations. You’ll be able to accept or ignore these. You can have some fun with your new friends by giving them a thumbs up or hooting at them.

Is there a limit to the number of friends I can invite? No, there is no limit.

Is it possible to see the driving information of other drivers? You’ll be able to see the trips of other primary drivers on your Plan. Simply go to View my trips and tap on the Filter option.

With the Find my vehicles feature, Planholders can locate all the vehicles insured on their Plan on their smartphone. The app will show the last location where the vehicle and smartphone were paired. If a family member is driving their car and their smartphone is paired with their vehicle, the Planholder can view the trip in real time.
