Dare To Think It! 2016 Discovery Kids Summer Camps

The Discovery Center is excited to present “Dare to Think It!”, the 2016 summer camp series using the STEM to STEAM approach

to learning. This play-based camp involves themes that infuse Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics into

47 physically and mentally supercharged morning and afternoon camp programs. This camp is for every child interested in mak-

ing friends, playing collaborative games, experiencing new things, and diving into the creative process through exploration and

invention! Join us as we take children full speed ahead this summer with STEAM power!

Camper Ages: 5-6 (5 yr. olds must be registered for fall 2015 kindergarten), 7-8 and 9-12. Internship program for 13-15 year olds.

Intern candidates must apply and interview—call 607-773-661 x 208 for application.

Hours: Half-day sessions 9am-12pm and 1-4pm with the option for a full day of fun with our back-to-back camps…just bring a

lunch! Supervised lunch with exploration of our interactive exhibits from 12-1pm for campers registered for both morning and

afternoon sessions.

Early drop off (includes Breakfast Club) and late pick-up available. Children registered for early drop off will enjoy a nutritious

breakfast from 8-9am at $20/session, and late pick-up from 4-5:30pm is $20/session - must sign up for extended camp hours at

time of registration.

Camp fees: All camp fees are due at time of registration including before and after care fees. Members $70, Not-yet members $75

per weekly half day session. (Session One fees slightly lower due to the 4th of July Holiday - Members $56, Not yet members $60

per weekly half day session.) One time $12 registration fee per camper for summer 2016 includes a Discovery Kids Summer Camp T

Discovery Kids Summer Camp Residency Program

Galumpha Gang For children 7-13 years of age Two Week Performing Arts Camp July 25-August 5, 9:00am-3:00pm (bring a packed lunch) Mark your calendars & plan your vacations around Galumpha Gang. You won’t want to miss out on the wildly amazing children’s performance camp instructed by the internationally acclaimed acrobatic dance company, Galumpha! Two weeks of collaborative choreography, dazzling acrobatics & teamwork will have your child performing center stage. Participants need not know a thing about acrobatics or dance, the fun is in the learning! Children will create a genuine professional performance all their own! The Galumpha Gang is geared for children 7-13 years of age, with 14-18 year old interns performing & lending a helping hand. Final performance Friday July 31st. *Where: Binghamton University’s Performing Arts Building *Cost: $380 members, $405 not yet members for two week program

Session #1 –Brainwave Week! July 5-8 Pirates Paradise (5-6 year olds, am) X marks the spot for fun this week as you sail the ocean blue in search for hid-den treasure! The DC Dabloon is headed your way! Ex-plore the pirates who sailed the Seven Seas, find hidden booty and walk the plank with games that challenge even the crustiest old barnacle! Members $56, Not-yet mem-bers $60. California Dreamin’ (5-6 year olds, pm) Dive right into water play with an investigation of the underwater world of The Disney Blockbuster, “Finding Dory.” Destination:

the Coast of Monterey California! Salt water science will have the sand between your toes as we explore the un-derwater world of Nemo and Dory’s fish friends, create sculptures of water animals and of course get a little wet with water games! Members $56, Not-yet members $60. Surfing In The USA (7-8 year olds, am) Surf is up this week as we catch the wave of liquid science through an investi-gation of the California Coastline! Experiments that will have you bobbing for more. Learn about exotic places

under the sun and exactly what the moon has to do with whether or not it is a good time to go surfing! Get set to get wet. Members $56, Not-yet members $60.

Catch The Sound Wave (7-8 year olds, pm) Get set to shake, rattle and roll as we make beautiful music with an investigation of sound, light and good vibrations! The physics of sound has never been this fun! Make dancing goo, musical instruments, create designer ears with an exploration of animal senses and explore how sound trav-els with games and activities amped for fun! Good Vibrations (9-12 year olds, am) Get set to shake rattle and roll as we make beautiful music with an investi-gation of sound, light and good vibrations! The physics of sound has never been this fun! Make dancing goo, musi-cal instruments, create designer ears with an exploration of animal senses and explore how sound travels with games and activities amped for fun! Members $56, Not-yet members $60. Funny Bones (9-12 year olds, pm) Your knee bone is con-nected to your thigh bone, your thigh bone is connected to your hip bone…but which bone is connected to your funny bone? Find out just how dem bones walk around and solve other mysteries of the human body with an in-vestigation of the skeletal system and the body’s organs. The construction of working models of the heart and res-piratory system together with outdoor games will make this a week of heart pumping fun! Members $56, Not-yet members $60.

Session #2 – Keen Kids Week, July11-15 Minecraft Camp (5-6 year olds, am) Gameplay is taken to a whole new level with activities based on the popular computer game-Minecraft. Build mechanical devices and raise the logic gates to travel the “Overworld” exploring different biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snow-fields all while evading the Creeper. Construction, “mob” crafting and even some food preparation to keep you “healthy” will fill your week with adventure. Jungle Book Adventures (5-6 year olds, pm) Take a break from the “Man-Village” this week and visit the Indian Jun-gle, home of Mowgli and his friendly fun-loving bear friend Baloo. Daily adventures will bring the movie (and the book!) to life as we investigate the animals that call the jungle home and the perils of jungle life. Scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, games and crafting will revolve around the noble qualities outlined in The Jungle Book’s timeless tale of friendship, courage, and persistence! Toymakers Workshop (7-8 year olds, am) No trash talking allowed as we transform found items into toys that spin, roll fly and entertain! On your mark, get set, go! Build and race your own balloon powered race car, float your own wind boat and roll your marble mouse to the finish line! Construct a puppet theater fit for a cast of finger puppets, create a board game and catch some creepy crawlies in a

bug box designed by you! Creeper Camp (7-8 year olds, pm) Gameplay is taken to a whole new level with activities based on the popular com-puter game-Minecraft. The tools you need to tinker and build will be available to you to invent design and explore projects that promote a pride in the process of creation. Each day new creative arts supplies will be available to you to try out solutions to the day’s project theme. Share ideas with your fellow makers and become part of a new wave of thinking through doing!

Session #3- Relentless Fun Week, July 18-22 Splat Camp (5-6 year olds, am) Creativity will be in full swing as kids investigate gravitational and applied forces through creative play. Pendulum drawing, magnetic forc-es and friction painting will be used to create individual and collaborative works of art! Star Wars: May the Force Be With You! (5-6 year olds, pm) May the force be with you as we prepare to challenge the Evil Empire! Yoda has sent out a call to young rebels to assist in the battle of good over evil and he needs your help! Planetary investigations, rocket science and master-ing the Jedi obstacle course will give you the skills you need to defeat the Evil Empire! Light The Torch (7-8 year olds, am) Light the torch and take the Olympic creed as we race to the finish with an investigation of Rio de Janeiro and the 2016 Olympic games. Spirits unite under the Olympic rings in beautiful Brazil with an investigation of good sportsmanship and friendly competition. Learn about the Olympics early be-ginnings at Mount Olympus and see how the games have changed over time as you are challenged to design and build an obstacle course of Olympic proportion!

Star Wars: Jedi Training Camp (7-8 year olds, pm) Blast off in the Millennium Falcon and join the coalition of Jedi warriors tasked with keeping the peace in the Republic! The only way to keep the Dark Force from destroying or-der in the Galaxy is through knowledge! Planetary inves-tigations, rocket science and a mind games will strength-en our energy field and keep the Evil Empire at bay! Star Wars: The Galactic Republic (9-12 year olds) Travel the galaxy protecting the united Galactic Republic of peaceful planets from the Evil Empire with your fellow Jedis! Only through our cooperative efforts can The Re-public prevail! Humanoids like yourself will be trained to hone their “force-sensitive” strengths through fetes of courage and cunningness! Acts of speed and quick reflex-es will show you the way to the light side! Olympic Games (5-6 year olds, pm) Kid’s spirits unite un-der the Olympic rings with an investigation of good sportsmanship and friendly competition. Learn about the Olympics early beginnings at Mount Olympus and see how the games have changed over time. The torch is lit for fun, games and crafts that will take you on an adven-ture of Olympic proportion! Zombie Science(7-8 year olds, am) Dig deep into creepy science with a cultural investigation of Zombies in history mixed with an exploration of decomposition (including worm science!) and a bit of neuroscience as we explore the human brain with Jello brain dissection! Steampunk (7-8 year olds, pm) Live animals will be the springboard for an investigation of Steampunk art and engineering as kids explore animal physiology and simple machines through the fine arts and game based activities including a Steampunk boat building challenge and re-

Session #5-Clever Kids Week, August 1-5 Inside Out Fun! (5-6 year olds, am) Prepare yourself for some side splitting fun with activities based on Pixar’s “Inside Out!” This camp will be pure joy as we take a peek inside the human psyche! Wings (5-6 year olds, pm) Science is for the birds this week as we explore Leonardo Da Vinci’s flying ma-chines inspired by an investigation of birds! Kids will put brush to paper as we create life drawings of birds and translate our paintings into flying ma-chines! A fun-filled investigation of Parachutes to flying machines will take fun to a whole new height! Leo the Inventor! (7-8 year olds, am) Most of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions were never made in his lifetime-they remained sketches in his famous notebooks. Bring Leo-nardo’s ideas to life using common household supplies and learn some hands-on history that will have you mak-ing your own paint, creating geometric figures out of marshmallows, crafting your own Camera Obscura and building your own Ornithopter! Toga Party (7-8 year olds, pm) All roads lead to Rome this week as we explore the life and triumphs of the ancient Romans. So, fasten your toga and wrap your head in olive leaves as we celebrate Italian culture with spaghetti struc-tures, pizza pie, chariot races and alfresco painting! Circus Maximus (9-12 year olds, am) Racers take your mark and head to The DC Circus Maximus where Roman ingenuity and a person’s quest for victory is challenged! Build your own chariot and boat for racing! Italian culture including food, sculpture and painting will make keep the fun on track! Brain Games (9-12 year olds, pm) Can your eyes deceive you? How good is your memory? Op art, brain teasers, puzzles, and games will test your reflexes, challenge your perceptions and flex your greatest muscle-your brain!

(5-6 year olds, am) The Renaissance men of the comic kind collide this week in an investiga-tion of history as we lift the lid on the key players of the Renaissance through food science, art and invention! Make Some Noise! (5-6 year olds, pm) Get set to shake rattle and roll as we make beautiful music with an investi-gation of sound, light and good vibrations! The physics of sound has never been this fun! Make dancing goo, musi-cal instruments, create designer ears with an exploration of animal senses and explore how sound travels with games and activities amped for fun! Cowabunga Camp! (7-8 year olds, am) The Renaissance men of the comic kind collide this week in an investiga-tion of Italy and history as we lift the lid on the key play-ers of the Renaissance through food science, art and in-vention! Hula Hoop Challenge (7-8 year olds, pm) We are putting a new spin on scientific investigation with a look at gravi-tational and applied forces through movement. Join pro-fessional hula hoopist, Amanda Florance, and shake it up this summer making your own hula hoop, learn cool tricks and choreograph a performance for friends and family. Paint, play and games will bring the fun full circle. Vive La France (9-12 year olds, am) Our wheels are turn-ing this week as we speed though an investigation of the most famous bike road race in the world-The Tour de France! Bike science will take us to new destinations of fun as we explore the country and customs of France with a look at famous works of art, landmarks and of course French cuisine. Secret Millionaires Kids Club (9-12 year olds, pm) Take a lesson from Warren Buffet, with activities and games based on the kid webisodes created by the world’s great-est investor, Warren Buffet himself for the animated se-ries “Secret Millionaires Club.” The basics of making a sound decision through the collection of information and trial and error will take you on adventures that all add up to fun! Be an advertising detective and create an eye catching marketing plan with commercials, posters and newspaper ads, balance the books, learn something new every day, explore the importance of cooperation and dream big for your future!

Session #7- Wired For Fun

August 15-19 Funny Farm (5-6 year olds, am) What games do cows play at parties? Moosical chairs! Learn all about life on a farm and the animals in the barn through fun and games! Why did the duck cross the road? To prove he wasn’t chicken, of course! Jokes, riddles and barn yard stories will spread the seed of curiosity as we take the food fear challenge with fruits and vegetables and dig in the dirt in the Story Garden’s CHOW garden reaping the benefits of healthy foods and a good belly laugh!

Angry Birds Soar (5-6 year olds, pm) Angry Bird camp is sure to be a knock down good time as you experi-ment with motion, force, speed and velocity. Con-struction, projectiles and birds will all come together this week of Angry Birds Camp as you build catapults and other projectile devices and angry bird targets to test the laws of motion. Crafting and real bird sci-ence will be thrown in just to keep things on the up and up. Now You’re Cooking! (7-8 year olds, am) A lot of knowledge comes from spilled milk! We are going to mix-it up this week with the basics of cooking, a splash of fun and games and a bit of kitchen chemis-try. Name that Vegetable, manners, pizza fractions, food sculpting and mystery food photo challenge will be sure to spice things up! Boxbots (7-8 year olds, pm) What do you get when you

combine cardboard, creativity and simple machines? Boxbots!

Toy building has never been this much fun! Mechanical ele-ments such as cams, levers, and linkages will all be used to create a moveable robot sculpture we call Boxbots! Robotics 101 (9-12 year olds, am) What is a robot? A robot is generally defined as a machine capable of sensing, thinking, or acting in a particular way. These three abilities are the nuts and bolts of Robotics 101. Learn what makes a robot a robot as we meet engi-neers in the field, discover artwork created by a computer, learn the secret language of robots and explore robots at work in your home! Science Snacks (9-12 year olds, pm) A lot of knowledge comes from spilled milk! Session #8- Aha Week,

August 22-August 26 Ice Age Camp (5-6 year olds, am) Cool off this summer with a frosty exploration based on the popular animated movie “Ice Age.” This frozen adventure will give you the cold hard facts about water science and chip away at ac-tivities that have you exploring cosmic events as you build a catapult and join Scrat on a series of adventures in the hopes of saving the planet! Ooo-la-la! (5-6 year olds, pm) Destination France! Berets, baguettes and bicycles will be at the Tour de France! This camp is sure to make an impression on you as we try our hand at works of art inspired by the impressionists, build the Eiffel Tower and explore the science of reflection with a look at the famous Hall of Mirrors at Versailles! Mod Squad Camp! (7-8 year olds am) Be part of the mod squad, a far out camp where “groovy” language and “be cool” attitudes of the 60’s and 70’s are all the rave. Step back into the age of disco and fondue! Investigate pop rocks science and let the force be with you as we learn about the space race, the civil rights movement, Beatle Mania and put on your own blast from the past 1976 Bi-centennial Celebration! Tour de France Camp (7-8 year olds, pm) Our wheels are turning this week as we speed though an investigation of the most famous bike road race in the world-The Tour de France! Earth Keepers Club (9-12 year olds, am) Science isn’t just about experiments that yield amazing results, it’s also about using knowledge to solve some of the world’s toughest problems. Explore environments, ecosystems, energy flow and organism with a close up look at global issues! Oil spill clean- up, vanishing rainforests and clean water filtration will be tackled through collaborative pro-jects and games that will have you inventing, building and saving the planet!

Hula Hoop Science (9-12 year olds, pm) We are putting a new spin on scientific investigation with a look at gravita-tional and applied forces through movement. Join profes-sional hula hoopist, Amanda Florance, and shake it up this summer making your own hula hoop, learn cool tricks and choreograph a performance for friends and family. Paint, play and games will bring the fun full circle.

NIGHT IN THE MUSEUM Children aged 7 - 12 have the opportunity to attend a museum sleep-over. Each sleepover is limited to 50 children. You drop off the camper and we do the rest!! Kids arrive at 6pm for dinner. The themed night is filled with museum play, special activities and fun! Lights out at 10pm-sleepover ends at 9am Saturday after breakfast. $28 per camper.
