Tailoring practical sessions for students with special needs

C10 This session is designed to investigate many of the unseen challenges that many of our “special needs” students face on a

day-to-day or moment-to-moment basis. We will look at the underlying physiological and neurological causes that manifest themselves into the behaviours that we witness and subsequently have to deal with. From here we will discuss; ideas to minimise their impact, and (more importantly) how our attitude towards our students can enable them to feel valued and to succeed. Let’s better understand our most challenged students.

Proud 2 Play (LGBTI+ youth) - ‘Counting down the days until P.E is over’

D3 LGBTI+ youth encounter many roadblocks to sport participation, and this starts with their first inception to sport in physical

education. Factors including fear of rejection and the ‘binary model’ of sports by sporting and PE communities create a pre-disposition that sporting communities provide a lack of inclusion. Proud 2 Play seeks to encourage LGBTI+ young people to participate in sport and exercise, by providing structured opportunities and pathways for them to do so, this includes creating inclusive policies and teaching guidelines to ensure every student feels safe and welcome in PE classes.
