Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is amalignant tumor arising from the lining of thestomach.Stomach cancer cells can spread by breakingaway from the original tumor. They enter blood vessels

or lymph vessels, which branch into all the tissues ofthe body. The cancer cells may be found in lymphnodes near the stomach. The cancer cells may attach toother tissues and grow to form new tumors that may

    damage those tissues.

The direct cause of peptic ulcers is thedestruction of the gastric or intestinal mucosallining of the stomach by hydrochloric acid, an

acid normally present in the digestive juices ofthe stomach. Infection with thebacterium Helicobacter pylori is thought toplay an important role in causing both gastric

and duodenal ulcers. Helicobacter pylori maybe transmitted from person to person throughcontaminated food and water.

The cause of appendicitis relates to blockage ofthe inside of the appendix, known as thelumen. The blockage leads to increased

pressure, impaired blood flow, andinflammation. If the blockage is not treated, gangrene and rupture (breaking or tearing) ofthe appendix can result.

Acute appendicitis is treated by surgery to removethe appendix. The operation may be performedthrough a standard small incision in the rightlower part of the abdomen, or it may be performedusing a laparoscope. In some patients, laparoscopyis preferable to open surgery because the incisionis smaller, recovery time is quicker, and less painmedication is required. The appendix is almostalways removed, even if it is found to be normal. With complete removal, any later episodes of painwill not be attributed to appendicitis.
